‘Hoax Hunters’ Begins The Long Road To The Screen

I haven’t read this book so I feel a little out of my wheelhouse in regard to how excite I should be, but Producer Jeff Krelitz and of Quality Transmedia has optioned the screen rights to Image Comics’ Hoax Hunters, per The Hollywood Reporter.

The book centers around “a group of paranormal investigators who debunk mysteries for a TV show called Hoax Hunters. But in reality, the hunters are working hard to cover up and keep the world’s dark forces secret.” It was created by Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley.

It seems like the idea at this point is to find a screenwriter to whip up a script before heading out to a studio to set up the project. Hoax Hunters is intended to be a feature film. Meanwhile, our Comics section has quite a bit of “Hoax Hunters” coverage here!

Lonmonster chiming in here. I’ve been following the “Hoax Hunters” comic series from day one, and this is absolutely a project you should be stoked for. It’s a wild series that explores bizarre cryptids and conspiracy theories all while pointing out the ridiculous nature of reality television. If done properly, this has potential to be a solid tongue in cheek horror flick. You can read the first issue for free over at ComiXology.

Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley’s hit Ghost Hunters spoof, Hoax Hunters, is set to continue with a new arc this January titled, “Haunchyville”. “Hoax Hunters” follows a group of paranormal researchers who use their reality television series to cover up the truth behind urban legends and monster folklore. With the first arc in the bag, the creative team is gearing up for a new storyline focusing on gnomes.

Having spent countless hours watching TV shows about haunted houses and real ghost stories, Image Comics’ Hoax Hunters is something I immediately identify with. Having a TV show to cover up real monsters that exist is a simple yet brilliant idea that still holds weight after 3 issues. Issue #2 brought in a pretty big plot twist, taking the casual story into a next level tale of voodoo with a side of massive monsters to top it all off. Issue #3 of “Hoax Hunters” keeps the pedal to the metal from start to finish showing the creative prowess of Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley. READ MORE

This is an awesomely satirical book that not only examines our obsession with hoaxes, but also society’s recent obsession with reality television. There are a fair share of supernatural investigation reality shows right now, most notably so is SyFy’s Ghost Hunters. As we well know, reality shows have, unfortunately, become the butthole of television. Everyone’s seen at least one, they’re never classy, and sometimes they’re full of shit. However, Steve Seeley and Michael Moreci, have taken up paranormal reality television and turned it on its head to deliver an incredible series debut of Hoax Hunters. The creative team deliberately addresses the cheesiness of reality TV, simultaneously offering a weird and intelligent plotline, all while never taking their tongues out of their cheeks. You may recall Hoax Hunters from the back pages of Hack/Slash this past year, but now it’s spun off into it’s own series. Written by Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley (yes, Tim Seeley’s brother), with J.M. Ringuet on art duties, Hoax Hunters is a zany cross somewhere between The X-Files and B.P.R.D.. The story follows a crew of hunters who travel across the globe investigating paranormal folklore and urban myths, mixing together all sorts of sci-fi goodies, with some sardonic jabs at reality TV. With the release of the first issue of Tim Seeley’s “HACK/SLASH” for Image Comics the publisher threw in a little extra added bonus material with the first installment of the all new “HOAX HUNTERS” serial. The series will continue its run in the back pages of Seeley’s series next week, and below you can get a small glimpse of the story as well as the details.

“Chupacabra. Yeti. The Montauk Monster. All the creatures of folklore, legend, and Internet fame–what if they were real? They’d be made to appear fake by a reality TV show, of course! HOAX HUNTERS is that show, though to their viewing audience, their goal is the exact opposite: seeking out YouTube sensations, tabloid creatures, and reported monsters and proving them to be false. The HOAX HUNTERS demonstrate that the truth isn’t out there.

In this initial run, readers follow the HOAX HUNTERS team as they respond to a mysterious American astronaut—accompanied by a murder of crows—who appears in Russia. And that team, which consists of a reanimated corpse, a former child star who suffered a demonic possession, and a special ops agent, isn’t your typical television cast. But to their audience, these are just their roles.”
