‘Grave Encounters 2′ To Hit VOD In Early October, Theaters Soon After

I don’t think I saw the original Grave Encounters, but apparently a lot of you did and liked it because the sequel Grave Encounters 2 is on its way. In the sequel the crew from the first film has disappeared and a film student decides to go searching for them. Which I suppose makes the film kind of meta (and the film student perhaps a bit stupid).

In the film, “While researching the events depicted in the original film and the subsequent disappearance of its lead ”actor” Sean Rogerson, Alex Wright received a bizarre video from a mysterious blogger named “DeathAwaits666.” Appearing to show Rogerson still alive but trapped inside the Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital from GRAVE ENCOUNTERS, Alex and his friends agree to meet the blogger at the infamous hospital in hopes of learning what really happened. To their horror, they quickly find themselves face-to-face with unspeakable evil. Realizing that they must be smarter and faster than Rogerson and his crew to avoid suffering the same fate, they use their knowledge of the original film to do whatever it takes to survive.

Grave Encounters 2 will be available nationwide on demand October 2nd with a theatrical roll out in October. Head inside for a better look at the first image from the film. READ MORE

[Blu-ray Review] Finally…’Return of the Living Dead’ Gets High Def Treatment!

Return of the Living Dead, Writer/Director Dan O’Bannon’s little 1985 horror/comedy that introduced zombies to brains, is back in UK-based Second Sight’s brand new steelbox Blu-ray release.

It’s packed to the rafters with nearly five hours of bonus features. Most importantly, the original soundtrack has been restored to its former glory!

North Americans haven’t had this luxury since back in the VHS days. Hell, I haven’t heard or seen the film in its original state in like 17 years!? It was with great pleasure that I got this opportunity to time travel back to my youth and enjoy Return of the Living Dead in the way it was meant to be experienced!

When a bumbling pair of employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to re-animate as they go on a rampage through Louisville, Kentucky seeking their favorite food, brains.READ MORE

‘The Tall Man’ Gets Fitted For A Home Video Release Date

The Tall Man Gets Fitted For A Home Video Release Date

Martyrs director Pascal Laugier’s The Tall Man in limited theaters on August 31st from Image Entertainment. While we don’t have an exact theater count yet, I’m assuming that “limited” is indeed the operative word here. Why? Because they have a DVD/Blu-ray street date of September 25th. This isn’t a big surprise seeing as many studios are experimenting with different theatrical and home video window. The Tall Man stars Jessica Biel, Jodelle Ferland, Stephen McHattie, William B. Davis and Samantha Ferris.

In the film, “In an isolated, slowly dying mining town, children are vanishing without a trace – abducted, the townsfolk whisper, by a mysterious entity known locally as “The Tall Man.” Town nurse Julia Denning (Jessica Biel) seems skeptical…until her young David disappears in the middle of night. Frantic to rescue the boy, Julia lives every parent’s darkest nightmare in this twisting, shock-around-each-corner thriller.

[Blu-ray Reviews] The Home Invasion Sub-Genre Is Alive & Kicking!

Aggression Scale 233x300 [Blu ray Reviews] The Home Invasion Sub Genre Is Alive & Kicking!THE AGGRESSION SCALE: The Aggression Scale can safely be described as Home Alone by way of Die Hard. A group of four hitmen are attempting to retrieve $500,000 of stolen cash for a criminal kingpin (Ray Wise of Twin Peaks fame). Of course, they eventually meet up with their worst nightmare in the form of a seriously disturbed teenager. This classic Juvie case ends up being a fierce combination of Kevin McCallister and John Rambo. With a premise loaded with grisly potential, The Aggression Scale surprisingly plays fairly straightforward. The violence is certainly gritty and the traps can get pretty nasty but I still got the feeling the filmmakers were holding back. This low-budgeter never went that extra level for me. It’s definitely worth a view if you were ever curious on what an R-rated Home Alone might look like. It’s a briskly-paced, well-acted little thriller that never overstays its welcome. I particularly enjoyed the performances from Dana Ashbrook (Bobby Briggs from Twin Peaks) and Derek Mears (Jason from Platinum Dunes’ Friday the 13th) as the two main baddies. If you keep expectations in check, I have no doubt you’ll find The Aggression Scale enjoyable on some level.

The MPEG-4 AVC video is pretty impressive for a low budget feature. The fine detail and colourization really stand-out. The black levels are equally pleasing. The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 is serviceable. My biggest gripe; I found the gunfire SFX to be on the weak side which hurt the overall impact of the violence. As for special features, we get a single 15-minute “making of” featurette. It lacks structure and jumps around without delving into any significant content.

Mothers Day BD Sleeve 2D 237x300 [Blu ray Reviews] The Home Invasion Sub Genre Is Alive & Kicking!MOTHER’S DAY (Canadian release): Director Darren Lynn Bousman’s (Saw II thru IV and Repo! The Genetic Opera) Mother’s Day had quite the arduous journey to the big screen/home video. This remake (in name only) of the trashy 1980 Troma cult classic was shot back in 2010. Like many that have suffered a similar fate, one would assume there was something amiss with the final product. At times; a resounding yes (Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation) and other times; a hell no (Trick r’ Treat). Mother’s Day falls in the latter category. In fact for Bousman, it’s his finest work to date. Unlike the original, this reimagining plays out as a tough-as-nails thriller. After a bank robbery goes bust, three brothers return to their old stopping grounds only to find it is occupied by new homeowners who are hosting a party with their closest friends. Once the domineering mother (Rebecca De Morney of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) arrives to the scene, matters get much worse for the unfortunate hostages.

It takes a mere 9 minutes for the shit to hit the fan. Mother’s Day never lets up the pressure from that point on. At a running time of 112 minutes, Bousman successfully manages to never let the tension and momentum ever slip. It’s a twisty, unsettling ride from start to finish. While the violence isn’t on the operatic level of the Saw franchise, its obvious Bousman learned a thing or two during his run on that Grand Guignol horror show. Whenever the red stuff makes an appearance, it packs a ferocious punch. Mother’s Day is enhanced by a splendid ensemble that helps keep the tension in a constant high gear. De Morney is pitch-perfect as the lead antagonist. She successfully evokes many levels of complexity, keeping the character of Mother from ever feeling one-dimensional or definable. Actually the unpredictability of human nature makes the actions from both camps rather tough to lock down. These characteristics make Mother’s Day a pleasantly unpleasant and thrilling ride to hop onboard of.

Mother’s Day comes equipped with a rock solid 1080p MPEG-4 AVC transfer, sporting consistently nice colour and detail. Most importantly, this 35mm-shot production contains a healthy level of grain throughout. It’s nice to see a modern feature with a filmic appearance every once in a while. Unfortunately the commentary track that accompanies the U.S. release is nowhere to be found on this edition. Actually Canadians get no love in the supplement department. There’s not even a menu screen!? The only exclusive on this disc is a DTS-HD 5.1 mix. It isn’t the most active in the market but it more than gets the job done effectively during all the pivotal moments. Not sure if there’s any difference from Anchor Bay’s Dolby TrueHD soundtrack but I generally prefer DTS so this is a plus in my opinion.

‘The Theatre Bizarre’ Performs In Your House This April

The Theatre Bizarre Performs In Your House This April

Image Entertainment presents a horror anthology like no other with its release of The Theatre Bizarre. The film was directed by seven veterans of the horror genre including Richard Stanley (Hardware), Buddy Giovinazzo (No Way Home), Tom Savini (Night of the Living Dead (1990)), Douglas Buck (Sisters), Karim Hussain (Ascension), David Gregory (Plague Town) and Jeremy Kasten (The Wizard of Gore (2007)).

This boundary-pushing film featuring stories of ancient evil, love, obsession, addiction, gluttony, sexual nightmares, pain, brutality and of course, death, is now available On Demand with cable and satellite providers, and will be available on DVD April 24, 2012.

Down a seedy city street, a young woman is obsessed with what appears to be a long abandoned theatre. One night, she sees the front door slightly ajar and impulsively decides to sneak inside. But there in the vast, eerie auditorium, a show unlike any other unfolds before her eyes. Its host is an odd marionette-like man who will introduce her to six tales of the bizarre: A couple traveling in a remote part of the French Pyrenees crosses paths with a lustful witch; A paranoid lover faces the wrath of a partner who has been pushed to her limit; The Freudian dreams of an unfaithful husband blur the lines between fantasy and reality; The horrors of the real world are interpreted through the mind of a child; A woman addicted to other people’s memories gets her fix through the fluid of her victims’ eyeballs; And a perverse obsession with sweets turns sour for a couple in too deep. But as the stories unfold, something strange is happening to the woman. Something irreversible and horrific. Something that awaits its next audience in The Theatre Bizarre.

The Theatre Bizarre enjoyed a successful 2011 festival run, screening at Fantasia International Film Festival, Frightfest, Sitges Festival De Cine Fantastic and Toronto After Dark. The film began its theatrical release in the U.S. on January 27, 2012 in seven markets including NY & LA, expanding to additional cities across the country. READ MORE

‘The Wicker Tree’ Clip, Making-Of Featurette

The Wicker Tree Clip, Making Of Featurette

On April 24th Anchor Bay Entertainment releases the Wicker Man companion piece, The Wicker Tree, on both Blu-ray and DVD. Set in the same universe as the 1973 cult classic The Wicker Man starring Christopher Lee and Edward Woodward, the film is written and directed by the original helmer, Robin Hardy, who also reunited with the original producer Peter Snell and venerable UK production company British Lion to bring a chilling new vision of this classic story to 21st century audiences, after a theatrical run.

We continue to take you behind-the-scenes of the hotly anticipated spin-off with the following exclusive making-of featurette and clip, with another trio of clips already released here.

Based on Hardy’s acclaimed 2006 novel “Cowboys for Christ,” “ ‘The Wicker Tree’ tells the story of Texas-based singer Beth Boothby (newcomer Brittania Nicol) and her friend Steve Thomson (Henry Garrett, “The Bill,” “Skins”), two born-again Christians who come to Scotland to spread the gospel. When their initial efforts are met with disdain and disinterest, they find comfort in an invitation to sing in Tressock, the border fiefdom owned by Sir Lachlan Morrison (Graham McTavish, Rambo, the upcoming The Hobbit films).

However, Beth’s and Steve’s message of personal chastity quickly comes into direct conflict with Tressock’s sexual and religious practices, drawing upon ancient Celtic beliefs and rituals. Temptations begin to challenge Beth and Steve – with the stakes no less than their very lives and souls…

Bonus features on The Wicker Tree Blu-ray and DVD include a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes and the theatrical trailer.

Horror In Your House: March 20th, 2012

Horror In Your House: March 20th, 2012

Battle Royale on Blu-ray is finally here thanks to Anchor Bay. And it’s just in time for you to watch again before the PG-13 version Hunger Games hits theaters. In other news, the most despised horror flick of 2011 is available for purchase. That film is none other than Creature. There’s also some rumors out there (and a few confirmed cases) that C.H.U.D. 2 and Ghoulies 3 have been dumped on DVD for the first time (North America) in a 8-pack combo available at select Walmarts. Fans of those flicks might want to do some digging thru the bargain bins.

BATTLE ROYALE (DVD / Blu-ray) (Complete Edition and Regular) – Anchor Bay

42 high school students are forced to kill each other on an uninhabited island.

MICAH SAYS: Most obvious PICK OF THE WEEK in some time. I had the chance to watch and review the Blu-ray. Some notes: The quality ranges from stunning to atrocious, with the artifacting being very noticeable and distracting in places (I watched the Director’s Cut). The audio, on the other hand, is great throughout. Even with a few small nitpicks, it’s still the biggest must buy of the year so far. The Complete Edition contains the sequel and a considerable amount of special features.

CREATURE – Arc Entertainment

Revolves around a group of family and friends who, en route to New Orleans, are sidetracked in the Louisiana bayou and encounter a monster named Lockjaw who is revered by the locals as a god.

MICAH SAYS: The people responsible for this crap love to defend it. Creature is undeniably garbage. The most recent “in defense” was written by one of the actors and he basically said viewers approached this film wrong with too critical of a lens. Well, here’s what I expected: An old school monster movie with genre favorite Sid Haig. Here’s what I got: A piece of nonsensical sh*t featuring Sid Haig. And I didn’t’ see this in an empty theater, I saw it how the filmmakers intended, at a packed theater (only full because it was free/radio promo thing). Almost everyone there left howling at the awfulness (if they didn’t dart out early). This was before all the negative hype started appearing on the web. Bottom line: Creature is a sh*tty movie and rightfully earned every one of it’s “Worst of the Year” awards. Move on, get tougher skin and make a better movie next time. Horror fans are a forgiving bunch.

DELIVERANCE FROM EVIL – Pumpkin Patch Pictures

A couple leave everything behind moving to San Francisco with their son. When they lose him in a tragic accident, they realize there’s an evil presence that doesn’t want them there. Forced to come to grips with the supernatural reality haunting them, they seek the help of a psychic to get rid of the evil spirit.

FUNERAL HOME (1981) – CFS Releasing

The 1980s retro horror classic! Young and easily frightened 16-year old Heather is called to stay with her grandmother in the hopes of helping her turn an old funeral home into a bed-and-breakfast. But strange happenings and unexplained murders around the home quickly make this vacation spot a “dead-and-breakfast” – with no answers as to who or what is causing all the death. Well-executed gloomy thriller in the Hitchcock vein. READ MORE

Japanese Splatter Director’s Deliver ‘Mutant Girls Squad’

Japanese Splatter Directors Deliver Mutant Girls Squad

Defense Minister Koshimizu (Naoto Takenaka) has launched a crusade to eliminate the Hirukos in the name of public safety, but Rin’s father tells her of an underground Hiruko alliance who are fighting for their right to survive, and after the death of her parents, Rin makes her way to a training camp for young Hirukos. Rin, who now has long blades where her fingers used to be, teams up with fellow teenage warriors Rei (Yuko Takayama), Yoshie (Suzuka Morita), Sachie (Cay Izumi) and Chiako (Naoi Nagano), all of whom have unique bodily weapons of their own, as they set out to take down Koshimizu.” READ MORE
