The first clip has surfaced (and quickly sinks) from Wrekin Hill Entertainment and Lionsgate’s Dark Tide, their shark thriller from Turistas director John Stockwell. The clip is extremely weak even by weak standards. But I digress, there are two real reasons why we’re all going to watch this and they can be thoroughly enjoyed after the break (and above the clip). The flick leads off with a three-week Ultra VOD window on March 8th with a theatrical release on March 30th, culminating in a packaged media and Digital Download release, the Halle Berry thriller will head to home video on April 8.

This week’s release list is a short one, but have no fear Deadheads is here…to make you laugh and fall in love. Also available to crash into your home is Ed Wood’s infamous classic Plan 9 From Outer Space on Blu-ray. Yes, someone somewhere said to themselves, “Man, you know what movie should be on Blu? Plan 9?” Even crazier, someone agreed and made it a reality. All I can say to those brave thinkers is, “Thank you, you crazy bastards.”

DEADHEADS (pictured above) – Freestyle Digital Media

Two zombie slackers, Mike and Brent, find themselves surprisingly reborn from the dead amid a disastrous zombie outbreak. After discovering an engagement ring in his coat pocket, Mike enlists his new found zombie pal, Brent, to embark on a quest in search of his lost love. What ensues is a hilarious cross country road trip as these two reformed flesh-eating pals hitch-hike across the country as they are pursued by a team of zombie killin’ bounty hunters!

MICAH SAYS: Initially touted as the American Shaun of the Dead, which is isn’t. It is, however, a fun zomedy that centers more on romance than horror. Sure, some of the jokes fall flat, but there is plenty to like in the affectionate homage. PICK OF THE WEEK

PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (Blu-ray) – Legend Films, Inc

Hailed as the worst film of all time, Ed Woods cult classic Plan 9 From Outer Space is one of the most hilariously entertaining movies you will ever see. Aliens fear the human race will develop a deadly ‘solaranite bomb.’ After eight failed attempts, Plan 9 is their scheme to reanimate earth s dead to build a zombie army and stop the earthlings from destroying the universe. With string powered flying saucers, twisted alien logic and ‘priceless’ special effects, it is a movie mission destined for success, or not!

MICAH SAYS: Yes, because this film NEEDS to be on Blu-ray. I’ve seen this film a couple times and it’s bad charm is undeniable. I am curious to how the transfer looks, not that it matters one bit. This movie is a jumbled mess of interplanetary proportions. Much love.

Underworld: Awakening Dated For Home Video

Sony Home Entertainment has booked Underworld: Awakening, their forthcoming 3-D battle between the vampires, Lycans, and now, humans, for release on DVD, Blu-ray and VOD May 8. Specs and art have yet to be revealed, but a 4-disc box set of the entire franchise is also expected.

In theaters January 20, “Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrioress Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.”

Big Air Studios has announced a new release plan for 11-11-11, Darren Lynn Bousman’s take at a Biblical apocalypse that opened in limited theaters on November 11. Look for the flick to hit VOD on March 6 with a DVD release on April 24. Special features will include a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, and more.

“After the tragic death of his wife and child, famed American author Joseph Crone travels from the United States to Barcelona, Spain to reunite with his estranged brother Samuel and dying father, Richard. However, fate has a different plan for Joseph as his life becomes plagued with strange happenings, and the constant sightings of the number 11. Academy Award winner Cloris Leachman’s (Fox’s “Raising Hope”) thriller The Fields is coming to Blu-ray (SRP $29.99) and DVD (SRP $24.99) from Breaking Glass Pictures (5 Star Day, Cropsey, The Living Wake) on April 24. Written by Harrison Smith (Six Degrees of Hell) and directed by Tom Mattera and David Mazzoni (cult favorite The 4th Dimension), the film also stars Tara Reid and newcomer Joshua Ormond (Sundance hit Robot and Frank). Extras include a making-of documentary, behind-the-scenes footage, hilarious Leachman outtakes, interviews with the real people involved, and clips from the world premiere.

Based on actual events, The Fields “follows a young boy named Steven during the summer of 1973. Steven (Ormond) is sent to live in the Pennsylvania countryside with his grandparents while his mother (Reid) and father (Faust Checho) work through their marital troubles. Though his grandmother (Leachman) and grandfather (Bev Appleton) are happy to host him, they warn Steven not to enter the cornfields next to their house.

Meanwhile, Steven hears news of the notorious Manson Family and their gruesome killing spree. He develops a morbid fascination with the murderous cult, and at the same time he can’t help but be drawn into the mysterious cornfields. Eventually he enters The Fields, where he makes a terrible discovery. Then, menacing noises begin haunting the family from outside at night and soon turn to violence. Well Go USA has picked up North American rights to Strippers vs Werewolves from U.K. independent sales and distribution label Kaleidoscope Film Distribution.

In Jonathan Glendening’s Strippers vs Werewolves, a turf war breaks out after a strip-club murder in this kick-ass revenge saga full of immense action and sharp one-liners.

The stunning Barbara Nedeljakova (Hostel, Hostel II) leads the cast alongside Sarah Douglas (Superman), Robert Englund (Freddy vs. Jason, Nightmare on Elm Street), Lucy Pinder, Martin Kemp and Ali Bastian.

This week doesn’t bring much in the way of releases outside of the Dennis Quaid vehicle, Beneath the Darkness, which pretty much no one liked. The Israeli horror flick, Rabies, looks to be the best film out (though I haven’t seen it) of the bunch. It’s garnered mostly positive reviews since its North American premier at Tribeca last year.

Are you picking up anything this week? I’m skipping purchases this week and trying to watch all the Starz movies in my Netflix Instant queue before they expire on March 1st. READ MORE

Hannover House, the newly rebranded entertainment distributor formerly known as Target Development Group, will expand on its current successes with sci-fi and horror films by adding two new acquisitions for video release this summer.

Patient Zero, a zombie apocalyptic movie from director Brian T. Jaynes (“Boggy Creek”, “Humans Vs. Zombies”) will be released onto DVD, Blu-ray and VOD in August.

Buried Alive, a micro-budget thriller from first-time director Kevin Clark, will debut on DVD and VOD in July.

Additional information on Patient Zero and Buried Alive will be released in March, including title release details, creative specifics, ordering information and home video suggested retail pricing. “The Devil’s Rock, June 5, 1944. Diverted off their landing point by strong currents, they eventually find themselves near the entrance of an ominous German bunker. After placing explosives on the gun turret, they surprise and kill a fleeing German soldier pleading for help. And when the screams of a woman follow from inside, Grogan makes the decision to go on an unauthorized rescue mission. Sitges Festival Director Exonerated Of Serbian Film Charges

Like it or hate it, Srdjan Spasojevic’s A Serbian Film is just a movie. It’s not real, just like the murder in Cannibal Holocaust. Still, weak-minded individuals will always waste negative energy fighting things they personally don’t approve of, which is why Sitges festival director Angel Sala was charged with “exhibition of child pornography” last March.

Late last night the festival sent out a notice announcing that Sala was exonerated of all ridiculous charges:

“The direction team of the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia would like to express its satisfaction for the dismissal of the case against Festival Director Angel Sala, for screening ‘A Serbian Film’ in 2010′s edition.

We would like to thank all the signs of support from every corner of the world during the past few months, and in particular the trust shown by the public institutions involved in the Festival (the Government of Catalonia, Sitges Town Hall, Spain’s Ministry of Culture), as well as all Festival Foundation board members, sponsors, and collaborators that make the festival possible. We would also like to extend this gratitude to our lawyers and the legal assistance team in charge of the case.

The Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia takes on the events that have taken place with a positive spirit. Due to this entire situation and its outcome, its direction team is committed to continuing the debate that has emerged around the limits of film and freedom of expression in a responsible manner. We understand that this issue has been an experience that will allow us to produce the next editions of the Festival in an even more successful way.”

No big studio films this week, but there are plenty of indie choices to take a look it. On the TV front “The Fades,” a BBC themed horror show, is now out on DVD and Blu. It’s good. Believe. I haven’t seen anything else on the list, but am curious about Inkubus, the latest Robert Englund flick. It’s garnered some attention as it’s being lauded as return to the nasty and sadistic for Englund. Are you picking up anything this week? READ MORE
