[Interview] Eli Roth Talks RZA, Building The World Of ‘The Man With The Iron Fists’ And What To Expect From ‘The Green Inferno’!

Even though The Man With the Iron Fists is billed as a “Quentin Tarantino Presents” project, Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel, Hostel 2) and RZA are the clear creative forces behind the film. They wrote the project together (based on an original story by RZA), working for years to create the world and mythology of the film. As a producer, Roth was on the film’s set in China every day helping RZA through his directorial debut.

In the film, “Since his arrival in China’s Jungle Village, the town’s blacksmith (RZA) has been forced by radical tribal factions to create elaborate tools of destruction. When the clans’ brewing war boils over, the stranger channels an ancient energy to transform himself into a human weapon. As he fights alongside iconic heroes and against soulless villains, one man must harness this power to become savior of his adopted people.”

I recently hopped on the phone with Roth and we discussed his partnership with RZA, building the world of Iron Fists, working with Russell Crowe and avoiding fight fatigue. Eli Roth’s (Cabin Fever, Hostel, Hostel: Part II) November shoot for The Green Inferno is just around the corner. And this cannibal film, inspired by Italo mondo films like Ruggero Deodato’s notorious 1980 Cannibal Holocaust and Antonio Climati’s 1988 Natura contro (also known as The Green Inferno and Cannibal Holocaust II), will literally be shooting in the middle of nowhere.

Roth told Movieline that he’s taking a small crew to a remote village up the Amazon River that has “no electricity, no running water, nothing.” And what to do the villagers get in return? “We’re giving these people a boat They have no contact with the outside world and we’re giving them a motorboat and we’re giving them medical supplies and school supplies, so they’re ecstatic. The one thing they need is a boat. They were like, ‘This will literally change our lives’.”

Oh, and these people had never seen a movie before. So what did the Green Inferno team screen for them? Cannibal Holocaust. “The villagers thought it was the funniest thing they’d ever seen.”

Roth’s hotly anticipated return to the director’s chair is said to follow a group of New York City student activists who head to the amazon where they plan to protest and save un-contacted tribes. Since the group is described as being “naive” in their efforts, I’m assuming the tribe is hungry. Roth penned the screenplay with Guillermo Amoedo. The duo also co-wrote Aftershock, which Dimension Films acquired out of the Midnight Madness portion of the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year.

“Remember This?” is a new feature that highlights cool anecdotes from the horror genre’s storied past. It’ll pop up from time to time, giving your brain a spark of an insane memory before you move on with your day.

Let’s clear up any initial misunderstandings – I still really like Hostel (even if I’m one of the rare few who prefer Hostel 2). This isn’t some retroactive review of the film. Rather, it’s a brief musing on the last time I was able to get swept up in hype to a degree where I wasn’t sure I’d be able to handle the actual movie.

I blind bought Cabin Fever when it came out on DVD and rather enjoyed it. It didn’t scare me per se – I responded more to the Deputy Winston stuff than anything else – but it put Eli Roth on my radar. In the ensuing months I kept hearing about his next movie, Hostel. Reader reviews on various sites, on AICN especially if I recall, touted how extreme the movie was. I read about the film’s “hardcore” bona fides over and over and over again. This went on for months (like many of you – I had a group of film sites that comprised my daily routine of web browsing). Then, suddenly, it was January 2006.

It was actually time to see the thing. My girlfriend at the time, who I realize now was an actual insane person far scarier than any horror movie, agreed to accompany me to a matinee showing of the film at the Grove. So here I was, on January 6th 2006, in my 20′s and somehow unsure if I’d be able to handle a movie. Let’s talk more inside… READ MORE

Many of these are from your suggestions! But this still isn’t a list of every horror movie ever made. And it still doesn’t contain every major work of every horror auteur (there’s still no John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left).

The next update will be the Ultimate Horror Challenge: Final Edition – where we take your best new suggestions and use them to get up to 101 films that every horror fan should see! Nor does it contain every major work of every horror auteur (you’ll notice we didn’t include John Carpenter’s They Live or Wes Craven’s The Last House On The Left). Rather, this is a compendium of films that we feel – in one way or another – are essential viewing for every horror fan. Some are mainstream (Poltergeist), some aren’t (Cannibal Holocaust). It’s a broad sampling of key films from the genre.

But you don’t have to be a horror die-hard to take the challenge! If you’re comfortable being a “Soccer Mom”, simply clock how many of these you have (or haven’t) seen and let us know! What Do You Guys Think Eli Roth’s ‘The Green Inferno’ Will Be?

It was announced this morning that Worldview Entertainment will finance and produce The Green Inferno. This will be the first time director Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel, Hostel 2) steps behind the camera in over 5 years. He’s been busy acting (Aftershock, Inglourious Basterds) and producing. He’s also probably been busy doing what I would be doing if I had the comforts that come with profit participation on Hostel, taking it easy and not rushing into anything. Waiting for the exact right project. There’s nothing wrong with that.

The only real information included with today’s announcement was that the plot points on the horror-thriller remain under wraps and production is set to begin in autumn in Peru and Chile. And that Roth, based on his original story, co-wrote the screenplay with Aftershock co-writer Guillermo Amoedo. So what’s it about?

The smart money seems to be on… Cannibals.

On our original News Bites announcement BD Reader bambi_lives8980 commented, “I would believe that Eli Roth’s new project dubbed ‘Green Inferno’ will be a sort of cannibal, third world survival horror flick, for several reasons. Firstly, Roth loves ‘Cannibal Holocaust’ (not sure about Ferox, but these types of movies for sure). Secondly he’s wanted Ruggero Deodato to make a sequel to Holocaust for years, if I remember correctly, but it just hasn’t happened yet, god knows if it will. Thirdly and lastly, wasn’t ‘The Green Inferno’ the name of the film-within-the-film in ‘Cannibal Holocaust’ where everyone gets killed and eaten?”

‘The Hospital’ Has As Many Ambitions As It Does Patients!

Allied Horror, in association with Lazy Donkey Films, has begun pre-production on The Hospital, starring genre staples such as John Dugan (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Scott Tepperman (Ghost Hunters International), Jim O’Rear (The Dead Matter), and Daniel Emery Taylor (Return Of The Swamp Thing).

They claim that the film will be like Saw, Hostel, Paranormal Activity and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre rolled into one. Kudos to them if they can pull it off! The film is also being shot in “actual haunted locations” this summer in East Tennessee and “the filmmakers are almost guaranteed to capture real paranormal activity while they are shooting their scripted paranormal events.”

In the film, “Old St. Leopold’s Hospital has many urban legends surrounding it, but the residents of Bridgeport all agree on one thing: tortured souls roam its abandoned halls. The mystery proves too much for a pretty young student who decides to investigate for her senior class project. Unfortunately, she does not find ghosts. She, instead, finds Stanley… serial rapist, murderer, and psychopath. As the young girl becomes Stanley’s new pet, a team of young investigators descend on the hospital to “hunt some ghosts.” Stanley sees nothing but fun and games in his future. But, what Stanley does not know is that the hospital truly is haunted and the restless spirits there are not happy with what he has been doing.”

Get ready for the next disturbing chapter in the terrifying Hostel franchise when Hostel: Part III debuts on Unrated DVD and Digital December 27th from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment! Bloody Disgusting has scored your exclusive first look at the DVD cover art and trailer for the film that I quite enjoyed. Potential Holiday Release for ‘Hostel: Part III’

Recently rated “R” for strong bloody sadistic violence and torture, sexuality/nudity and pervasive language, word on the street is that Sony Home Entertainment’s Hostel: Part III could be arriving on DVD, Blu-ray and VOD this coming December. No date has been confirmed.

Directed by Scott Spiegel, and starring Kip Pardue, Brian Hallisay, Sarah Habel, John Hensley, Skyler Stone, Chris Coy and Thomas Kretschmann, “The story concerns a Vegas bachelor party that turns grisly, Hostel-style.”

Watch this spot for our set report in the coming months. Eli Roth, who created and directed the first two films in the franchise, had no part in the third.

Written & Directed by Eli Roth, Presented by Quentin Tarantino, HOSTEL is a mixture of many of the most terrifying things about human nature and the world at large, culled from many impossible-but-true stories of human trafficking, international organized crime, and sex tourism.

Relentlessly graphic and deeply disturbing, the film is sure to shock even the most hardcore horror genre fans. HOSTEL tells the story of two American college buddies Paxton and Josh who backpack through Europe eager to make hazy travel memories with new friend Oli, an Icelander they’ve met along the way. Paxton, Josh, and Oli are eventually lured by a fellow traveler to what’s described as a nirvana for American backpackers – a particular hostel in an out-of-the-way Slovakian town stocked with Eastern European women as desperate as they are gorgeous. The two friends arrive and soon easily pair off with exotic beauties Natalya and Svetlana. In fact, too easily… Initially distracted by the good time they’re having, the two friends quickly find themselves trapped in an increasingly sinister situation that they will discover is as wide and as deep as the darkest, sickest recess of human nature itself – if they survive.
