Sony Books A Return To ‘Hotel Transylvania’ For 2015

Hotel Transylvania (review), Sony Pictures Animation’s surprise monster hit, is getting a sequel, THR says.

Sony has just penciled a September 25, 2015 release date for what is presently being titled Hotel Transylvania 2.

The project is in the early development stages and has no director. Genndy Tartakovsky, who directed Transylvania, is moving on to direct SPA’s Popeye movie project, which just got a release date of September 26, 2014.

Hotel Transylvania is Dracula’s lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up, free to be the monsters they are without humans to bother them.

Theatergoers Check Into ‘Hotel Transylvania’ With Record Breaking Numbers!

Completely out of left field, Hotel Transylvania (review) scored the best-ever September debut, estimating $43 million. The adult portion of the studio’s weekend counterprogramming double-bill, Looper, also overperformed with $21.2 million.

The Jennifer Lawrence starrer House at the End of the Street (review) took in another $7.1m for a total of $22,225,000. Paul W.S. Anderson’s Resident Evil: Retribution (review) is up to $38,700,000 total after pulling in another $3 million (it should be noted that it’s done a disgusting $175 million worldwide).

Hotel features the voices of Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, David Spade, Jon Lovitz, Cee Lo Green, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon and Selena Gomez. “Welcome to Hotel Transylvania, Dracula’s lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up, free to be the monsters they are without humans to bother them. On one special weekend, Dracula has invited some of his best friends – Frankenstein and his bride, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, the Werewolf family, and more – to celebrate his beloved daughter Mavis’s 118th birthday. For Drac, catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem – but everything could change for the overprotective dad when one ordinary guy stumbles on the hotel and takes a shine to Mavis.

[TIFF '12 Review] Brad Thinks ‘Hotel Transylvania’ Might Work For Kids, But Not For You

In theaters September 21 from Sony Pictures Animation is Genndy Tartakovsky’s animated horror comedy Hotel Transylvania 3D, which features the voice talents of Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, David Spade, Jon Lovitz, Cee Lo Green, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon and Selena Gomez.

Brad (Mr. Disgusting) had a chance to check the film out at TIFF and thought it could have played smarter. “The biggest disappointment is that it’s obviously a film made for young teens, mostly void of any adult humor. The writing lacks any sort of real punch, but is cutesy enough to warm the hearts of some parents out there. Horror fans? ‘ParaNorman’, while I dislike the film, was more aimed towards the horror audience. Although ‘Hotel Transylvania’ is way more focused, entertaining, and isn’t trying to be something it’s not.

[TIFF '12] Vanguard Selection Highlights: ‘Sightseers’, ‘Thale’, ‘Here Comes The Devil’ And More!!

Earlier today we gave you detailed rundowns on images from almost all of the TIFF Midnight Madness selections – along with a separate overall guide. While the Midnight Madness selections offer a great selection of horror (John Dies At The End, The Lords Of Salem, Aftershock, Hellbenders 3D, The ABC’s Of Death etc…) that’s not all the festival has to add to the genre world.

The Vanguard Selections might be less overtly gory, but a lot of them have the potential to be strong and disturbing genre efforts. Kill List director Ben Wheatley has Sightseers, there’s the horror sound booth chiller Berberian Sound Studios, animated comedy Hotel Transylvania (which technically falls into the “Kids” section, but hey – monsters), chick-with-a-tail tale Thale and much more.

The Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 6th-16th. Head inside for a preliminary rundown! READ MORE
