The project revolves around a group of estranged best friends who are reunited after another commits suicide. Gathering ends up becoming a bloodbath because meeting was set up as retribution.
Bassist Zander Zon has posted an incredible solo bass cover of Nine Inch Nails‘ classic track “Hurt”. While the title says that it’s a cover of NIN’s, I personally think it sounds more like a cover of Johnny Cash‘s 2002 cover. So, it’s a cover of a cover. We’re definitely going deeper here.

Just like movie remakes, cover songs can be really tricky. Some are fantastic while some are truly god awful that should have never even considered “paying homage” to the original. But when they nail it, oh boy is it something special. Look at the remakes of John Carpenter’s The Thing or Dawn Of The Dead, films that took elements of the original and created something new and exciting. Smile Empty Soul and current tourmates HURT have recorded a cover of the classic Alice In Chains song “No Excuses”, which originally appeared on the Jar Of Flies EP. According to Flint, MI’s Banana 101.5, who premiered the track, the track will be made available for download at some point in the future with the proceeds likely going to a benefit or charity. Personally, I wasn’t a big fan of the cover. Then again, I’m a big fan of AiC, so it’s pretty hard to please me in that regard. Still, I can tell that they remained true to the source material and the very fact that they covered the song shows that they have a passion and respect for the band. Just not my cup o’ tea.
