IFC Midnight Nabs Cronenberg’s ‘Antiviral’ For The U.S.

antiviral banner IFC Midnight Nabs Cronenbergs Antiviral For The U.S.

Brandon Cronenberg’s Antiviral, a bizarre celebrity thriller that stars Caleb Landry Jones (Byzantium, X-Men: First Class, The Last Exorcism) made its debut at Cannes last month and has now been picked up for U.S. distribution by IFC Midnight, which I’m guessing means we can probably expect a theatrical/VOD combo release sometime in the 3rd or 4th quarter of this year

‘Antiviral’ follows Syd March, an employee at a clinic that sells injections of live viruses harvested from sick celebrities to obsessed fans. Biological communion – for a price. Syd also supplies illegal samples of these viruses to piracy groups, smuggling them from the clinic in his own body. When he becomes infected with the disease that kills super sensation Hannah Geist, Syd becomes a target for collectors and rabid fans. He must unravel the mystery surrounding her death before he suffers the same fate.

The Toronto production also stars Sarah Gadon, Malcolm McDowell, Douglas Smith, Matt Watts and James Cade. READ MORE

Nevermind. You know AREA 51?

Oh yeah! The aliens in the desert and shit? Isn’t Oren Peli making that?

Right. But this isn’t that film. This is AREA 407.

Oh, OK. Whats in Area 407? Aliens?

No. I think it’s raptors.

[Blu-ray Review] ‘The Human Centipede Part 2: Full Sequence’

Original Review From Fantastic Fest ‘11

Despite being shown in theatres, it’s hard to actually classify The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence as a film. Like Faces of Death, it’s a collection of increasingly gross ideas strung together, specifically designed to push buttons and offend with the added bonus of having something that barely passes as a narrative woven between them. When viewed in that light, it’s admirable how committed director Tom Six is to his vision and how uncompromised it feels, but as he explained during a post-screening Q&A, it’s basically a bunch of leftover ideas that he couldn’t fit in the first time around. The explanation makes sense, but it certainly doesn’t setup the context for why these events are occurring or what Six is attempting to comment on with his grotesque display of medical inaccuracies. Sint (Saint) (V)

Official: A horror film that depicts St. Nicholas as a murderous bishop who kidnaps and murders children when there is a full moon on December 5.

Alternate: Sint takes place during Sinterklaas (Saint Nicolas), a typical Dutch children’s fest in December. Only this festival will be ruined by a slasher Santa.

Saint Nicholas is not the good-hearted children’s friend as people think he is. In reality he is a cruel bloodthirsty bishop who, whenever there’s a full moon on December 5, will try to slaughter as many children as possible.

IFC Midnight Picks Up ‘Rites of Spring’ Slasher!

IFC Midnight Picks Up Rites of Spring Slasher!

IFC Midnight – a distributor that is definitely in tune with what genre fans would call “films of interest” – has acquired U.S. rights to director Padraig Reynolds’ kidnapping thriller Rites of Spring, which stars genre faves AJ Bowen (The Signal, House of the Devil, A Horrible Way to Die, Hatchet 2) and Anessa Ramsey (YellowBrickRoad, The Signal). It also features creature design by Aaron Sims (A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child, Wrong Turn, The Mist, I Am Legend, Clash of the Titans, The Thing). Color me intrigued (whatever shade that is).

No release date has been announced yet. Judging from the trailer, which you can check out after the break, it looks like a killer scarecrow flick, but I could be way off-base.

In the film, “A group of kidnappers abduct the daughter of a wealthy socialite and hide out in an abandoned school on the edge of town. But feelings of guilt soon overtake the kidnappers, dividing the group and putting their entire plan in jeopardy. The evening further spirals out of control when their poorly chosen hideout becomes a hunting ground for a mysterious creature that requires springtime ritualistic sacrifices.READ MORE

The Human Centipede Part 2 (Full Sequence) (limited)

A 12-person centipede. The only information IFC Films and the producers are revealing is that this time there is a new villain on the scene named Martin, and that the premise is 100% medically inaccurate!

Details were scarce until the UK banning which revealed that the sequel “tells the story of a man who becomes sexually obsessed with a DVD recording of the first film and who imagines putting the ‘centipede’ idea into practice.Read the official synopsis here.

Choose (V)

Katheryn Winnick (Amusement) stars as a journalism grad student who attempts to track down a vengeful killer (Nicholas Tucci) with the help of her detective father (Kevin Pollak) and a shrink (Bruce Dern).

Billed as a genre piece in the spirit of Se7en and The Silence Of The Lambs, it starts with an intruder breaking into a teenager’s home and telling her to choose which of her parents he will kill.

Upon further investigation, the journalists discover that Alvaina has a history of bizarre cult activity revolving around human sacrifice. Hellbent on revealing the truth, they travel to the small village to uncover the story first hand. But after the discovery of an ancient stone statue hidden within the town, they quickly find themselves pursued by a mysterious and vengeful group of locals. Forced into the gruesome reality of true survival horror, the journalists soon realize that Alvaina hides a much darker secret than they could ever imagine.

IFC Midnight Attains ‘Sint’hood

I feel like I was just talking about how great IFC Midnight is and how they always manage to snag interesting stuff… Oh wait, I was.

After announcing their latest acquisition – The Shrine – earlier this week, IFC Midnight just revealed that they picked up the Santa Claus slasher Sint, which has its North American premiere tonight. This was one of my most anticipated film this year, so I’m glad someone who actually cares about their releases and has a good theatrical/VOD/DVD program bought it.

A Freddy Kruger-like Santa Claus returns every December 5 with zombie pirate henchmen to kidnap and murder Dutch children. What’s not to like here?

IFC Midnight Worships At ‘The Shrine’

IFC Midnight has really been doing a bang up job with their acquisitions. I might not LOVE everything they pick up, but they listen to horror fans and grab stuff that the community has a lot of interest in.

Their latest purchase is The Shrine (review), Jon Knautz’s (straight) follow-up to Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer. The film follows a group of young journalists who investigate a cult said to practice human sacrifice, but their ambitious ways may lead them to becoming the cult’s next victims.

Other recent IFC Midnight labeled films include Kill List (which is quite good), We Are What We Are, Kidnapped and The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence.

Hopefully by now you’ve had a chance to check out Pang Ho-cheung’s Korean slasher Dream Home (review) that’s been available On Demand from IFC Midnight since February 9.

But as time passed, the old buildings in front of her home were demolished to make way for a huge residential project that now blocks her view. Increasingly disappointed and upset, she vowed to one day save up enough money for her family to move into a new apartment with a magnificent sea view.

In order to get what she wants, she must take matters into her own hands…even if it means getting her hands seriously bloody.

Tetsuo III: The Bullet Man (VOD/limited)

The third installment in the series, TETSUO III: THE BULLET MAN, and Tsukamoto’s first English-language film, stars Eric Bossick as Anthony, a young man who was born and raised in Tokyo and is now raising a family there. What should be a happy time in Anthony’s life is not: his wife is crippled by anxiety and unable to leave the house. She also has recurring nightmares about a horrible fate awaiting the pair’s young son, Tom. Those nightmares turn out to be prophetic when Tom is cruelly run down in the street. Losing their boy pushes Yuriko over the edge and triggers violent emotions in Anthony, whose body begins to transform. Anthony flies into a terrible rage, and soon discovers that the power of his emotion transforms him into a strange, metallic monster. When the driver who killed Tom reappears and Anthony learns the truth about his father’s past experiments on human guinea pigs and about his mother’s death, Anthony mutates into a mass of metal – a human weapon fueled by an uncontrollable rage. This delights the mysterious man who ran down Anthony’s son, a man who now continually taunts Anthony from a distance.

Emma just wanted to be free… but there are things you should never wish for.

A Taste of Violence in First ‘Dream Home’ Clip

IFC Midnight did us all a huge favor when they acquired Pang Ho-cheung’s awesomely gory Dream Home (review) for release here in the States. IFC Nabs Rights to ‘Kidnapped,’ ‘Exorcismus’

IFC Midnight is locking up their 2011 line-up as they’ve acquired two more horror pics for VOD, DVD and theatrical releases. The first is Filmax’s horrid, horrid Exorcismus, which will probably make the top of my “worst of the year” list next month. The film focuses on a young girl, Emma, whose erratic behaviour forces her family to bring in a priest to try and resolve the problem through hypnosis. But let’s not take a completel dump on IFC as they countered the embarrassing pick-up by snagging the rights to the awesome thriller Kidnapped, a home invasion movie with an incredibly shocking finale.
