Leprous Completes Recording Of New Album: Announce Release Date

Norwegian prog-rockers Leprous have announced via their Facebook page that the name and release date of their new album. Coal, which is the followup to 2011′s Bilateral, will be released May 20th in Europe and May 28th in North America.

Bilateral was tied for my Album Of The Year in 2011 and Coal landed on my Most Anticipated Releases of 2013, so I welcome this news! I honestly can’t wait to hear it, especially considering how many times I’ve listened to Bilateral (probably around 100 times).

You can watch their video for “Restless” below. READ MORE

Leprous Commence Recording New Album: Post Studio Footage

Norwegian prog metal band Leprous has commenced the recording of their as-of-yet-untitled follow up to 2011′s Bilateral (which was tied with White Willow‘s Terminal Twilight as my Album of the Year).

Singer/synth-player Einar Solberg gives an update: “As many of you already know, we’ve started recording our new album. The drums are finished, and we’re now focusing on the guitars. Also this time we’re using Vegard ‘Ihsahn‘ Tveitan and Heidi ‘StarOfAsh’ S. Tveitan as our producers / technicians. The drums were recorded in the really cool and old school Juke Joint Studio, and we’re really satisfied with the result.

“As far as the new music, we can only remind you that LEPROUS will never be the kind of band to re-create the mood from previous works, and it’s very important for us that each album has its own strong character. We have great belief in this album and we promise something fresh, challenging and soulful! This album will also be mixed and mastered by Mr. Jens Bogren (Bloodbath, Opeth, Amon Amarth) at Fascination Street Studios.

The band has released a studio update that shows the drums being recorded. You can hear snippets of new songs during the video.

Ex-Nevermore Guitarist Jeff Loomis Unveils New Song “A Liar’s Chain”

Jeff Loomis (who is easily one of my favorite guitarists playing today) has put out a stream of a new song entitled “A Liar’s Chain”. The song was recorded with his current touring line up of Joe Nurre (guitar and vocals), Anup Sastry (drums) and Greg Macklin (bass). You can check out the song below.

Loomis writes, “A Liar’s Chain is the first of three songs that I recorded with my band to officially debut online. We started playing it live on our last US run and it seemed to go over really well with fans. I had so much fun recording ‘Surrender’ with Ihsahn on vocals for my last solo album that I wanted to do more songs like that. Joe Nurre, who has been playing guitar in my band for the last year or so, has a pretty killer death metal voice, so I thought it would be perfect to do some more stuff like this with him as well as the rest of the guys.

I’m really looking forward to getting over to Europe again. I have so much fun there. The Euroblast tour and festival has some amazing musicians on it, which is going to be really special for me as well, as I love watching and hearing great bands play. We’re going to be playing ‘A Liar’s Chain’ as well as one other new song with Joe singing. I look forward to seeing everyone there.

Jeff Loomis will be touring Europe on the Euroblast 2012 tour with labelmates Monuments, Vidhjarta, and Stealing Axion. Check below for the tour dates. READ MORE

Wacken Open Air 2013 Sold Out Almost A Year In Advance

It’s no secret that the Wacken Open Air festival in Wacken, Germany is probably the largest metal festival in the world. Drawing in tens of thousands of people from across the globe, this festival brings some of the biggest names in hard rock and metal as well as showing the more underground, extreme acts that people would otherwise have no chance to see.

Now, the 2013 incarnation of this extremely popular festival is officially sold out. Let me rephrase that in a way that should have a mind-blowing effect on you: Wacken Open Air has sold 75,000 tickets almost one year in advance. There is one set price for tickets ($140) and they are sold on a first come, first served basis for the Aug 1st – 3rd festival. Without knowing the full line up for the show, people have spent $140 plus fees and postage. It’s unbelievable but it also says that Wacken is doing something right. They have been selling out the festival for several years now and it looks like there is no sign of them stopping.

Below is a list of bands that are so far confirmed to play at the show (a TON more will be added over the next months, so keep an eye out at the official website to stay up-to-date) READ MORE

Album Review: Leprous ‘Bilateral’

Leprous is a band that you probably haven’t heard of, which is a damn shame. These guys were the backing band for Ihsahn (Emperor) for 2009 and the first half of 2010, if that gives you any clue as to how talented they are. Around since 2001 with an EP, a demo and one full-length album, the band is back with their newest release, Bilateral. Laced with heavy doses of 70’s prog rock but with a thoroughly modern twist, this album rolls up and down like a roller coaster. But is it the awesome speedy ride you crave or the disappointing kiddy ride that you have to ride with your wee young’un? Check after the jump for the answer.
