‘The Legend’ Among Latest Batch Of Titles To Get Green-Lit On Steam

There are a lot of indie horror games looking to take advantage of the Internet-born Slenderman’s recent surge in popularity, and in a way, The Legend is among them. Only this horror game doesn’t have anything to do with Slenderman, instead it follows a new terrifying creature, which its developer has smartly kept shrouded in mystery. It’s also powered by the same engine the Crysis series uses, which means it’s gorgeous.

Today, Valve announced another batch of indie games that have gotten the green light for distribution on Steam. The Legend wasn’t the only one — check out the full list after the break.

‘DreadOut’ Indiegogo Campaign Almost Over, Still Short Of Funding Goal

Earlier this week Among the Sleep successfully passed its funding goal, so this has already been a great week for one indie horror developer. I say we spread the love to another. There are only three days left in DreadOut’s Indiegogo campaign and they’re still short of their $25k goal.

Granted, they’re running a flexible funding campaign, so even if it falls short they’ll get the money they’ve raised so far. It’d still be nice to see two incredible indie horror games get the support they need this week. If you’d like to support the game, you can donate here.

[Indie Horror Spotlight] ‘Among The Sleep’ Is Spooky

In this episode, Adam and David explore a bizarre and terrifying world, where they learn to embrace their inner child and break free from the shackles of their crib in search of their mum. For the unfamiliar, Among the Sleep is an indie horror game developed by Krillbite Studio. Yesterday, their Kickstarter campaign successfully reached its funding goal with about three days to spare. Now they’re working toward achieving a handful of stretch goals that include Oculus Rift support (basic support is already happening, this would be for more advanced functionality) and commentary tracks.

If the idea of a toddler sized Adam climbing dresser shelves so he can reach a doorknob sounds appealing — and really, why wouldn’t it — you should definitely watch me play this alpha.

‘Among The Sleep’ Free Public Alpha Goes Live Tomorrow

If Among The Sleep isn’t on your radar yet, it should be, and not just because it has Oculus Rift support. It’s an atypical horror game played from the perspective of a toddler exploring an empty house late at night. The game turns common furniture like dressers into obstacles to overcome, a thunderstorm into a terrifying, unfamiliar event.

Tomorrow, we’ll be able to get a whole lot familiar with Among the Sleep when its free alpha goes live to the public (May 14 at 2 p.m. ET). You can grab it when it’s made available on the game’s Kickstarter page.

In The Multiplayer Survival Horror Game ‘Damned,’ You’re The Hunter

9heads Games recently unveiled their second project, a multiplayer-centric survival horror game that puts you in the shoes (boots, hooves, whatever) of the bad thing that’s killing everyone. Now, before you get all up-in-arms about the multiplayer bit, don’t worry, it actually looks amazing. This is because in Damned, it’s being used in a really unique way. In it, up to five players will have the option of teaming up as a group to better their odds of survival while another player hunts them down. See it in action after the jump.

‘Among The Sleep’ Gets Oculus Rift Support, Studio Jory To Record Dialogue

Developer Krillbite Studio has been hard at work on Among the Sleep, an indie horror game that places you in the footies of a toddler who’s alone in an empty house at night. It’s one of the more unique horror games I’ve ever seen, and it only looks more promising every time I read something new about it. On Kickstarter, Krillbite revealed basic support of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset — as well as a stretch goal that, if unlocked, will let them do more than dabble with it — and an exciting collaboration with Studio Jory, which will be handling the dialogue recording.

The name might not sound familiar, but you’ve heard Jory’s work. Their portfolio includes multiple Game of the Years, including The Walking Dead and Knights of the Old Republic, as well as the Oscar winning film Lost in Translation. Head past the break for a look at what they’re doing with the Oculus Rift.

Survival Horror ‘Darkwood’ Indiegogo Campaign Is Live

The open-world survival horror game Darkwood looks amazing, but like so many other indie projects, its developer needs help. Acid Wizard Studio has launched an Indiegogo campaign to get the funding they need to help finish the game, and if enough people contribute there are very cool stretch goals waiting to be unlocked, including an “Epic” difficulty mode, DLC, and even two-player co-op.

For the unfamiliar, Darkwood is a top-down horror game that randomly generates a unique world every time you play. It’s about exploration, and carries many of the traits from the Roguelike genre — permadeath, character perks, and challenging gameplay — as well as weapon crafting and some intensely freaky environments. Head past the break for its quirky campaign video.

‘The Forest’ Is ‘The Descent’ Meets ‘Cannibal Holocaust’

Another horror game recently made its way onto Steam Greenlight, but this one isn’t quite like the rest. It’s an open world survival horror game that places you in a forest, alone, unarmed, and with a population of freaky pale cannibals that would very much like to eat you alive. You’ll need to learn how to start a fire, construct a shelter, and scavenge for food in order to survive. Even if you master that part, you’ll have to either hide from or defend against the forest’s hostile inhabitants. More after the jump, including a debut trailer.

‘Boon Hill’ Brings Pixelated Graveyard Sim Goodness To Kickstarter

Hello, my name is Adam, and I like wandering around cemeteries.

I know it’s weird, but Boon Hill looks like it was designed with weirdos like me in mind. According to its Kickstarter page it’s a “graveyard simulator, a story of epitaphs, a tale of ghosts that haunt, a game with no goal.” It also happens to have two of our very own behind it — Matthew Ritter and Hayden Dingman — so if this sounds like something you wouldn’t mind sinking some time in I recommend supporting its Kickstarter campaign.

[GDC 2013] First Impressions: ‘Blackwell’s Asylum’

This article is the third and final regarding games I first saw at GDC and went home to play. If you missed the first two articles, you can find them here and here.

Written by Hayden Dingman, @haydencd

I’m going to make a lofty claim here: Blackwell’s Asylum is the most unsettled I’ve felt while playing a game since Amnesia.

A Few Clips To Get You Excited For ‘Sir, You Are Being Hunted’

Indie tweedpunk robo-horror title Sir, You Are Being Hunted looks spectacular. It’s a quirky indie horror game with an emphasis on exploration and survival, as you’re hunted mercilessly by gangs (gaggles? murders? hornswaggles?) of robots. I really can’t wait to run for my life over a charming British countryside as robots and their robot dogs chase me. If this gets your nether bits aflutter, I recommend watching some of this brand new gameplay footage.

6 Upcoming Horror Games That Look Absolutely Terrifying

I don’t know if you’ve noticed this already, but this is an incredibly exciting time to be a horror fan. There are more new horror releases now than there’s ever been. We’ve seen multiple entries in franchises like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, as well as a slew of quality indie horror games from devs like Frictional Games (Amnesia), Blue Isle (Slender: The Arrival), and Red Barrels (Outlast), among others. Perhaps what’s most exciting about this recent surge of popularity the genre’s seeing are the hints at where it’s headed next.

Five years ago action horror was the thing. As popular series like Resident Evil (RE4-5) and Silent Hill (Homecoming) strayed away from their survival horror roots and newcomers like Dead Space and Left 4 Dead saw great success, for a while it looked like the final nails were being hammered into the beloved subgenre’s coffin. Don’t get me wrong, action horror is still big now, but after the relative failures of Resident Evil 6 and Dead Space 3, I no longer see it becoming the norm. Between games like the six I have waiting for you after the break, it looks like survival horror is coming back, and this time it’s returning in a far more terrifying form.

[GDC 2013] First Impressions: ‘Gone Home’

Written by Hayden Dingman, @haydencd

I went to GDC, I saw some games. Some were horror games. These are games I felt were memorable at the event (Part 2 of 3, read part 1 here).

I’ve actually been looking forward to Gone Home for a while now. I had the chance to play it at GDC, but I knew this was a quiet game that relied a lot on atmosphere—not the best demo to play with Thirty Flights of Loving’s awesome soundtrack in the adjacent booth and dozens of industry figures chattering in the immediate space around you.

‘Cry Of Fear’ Standalone Coming To Steam Next Week

Indie horror hit Cry of Fear was among the first batch of titles to be greenlit by the Steam community, and now its developer has given us a release date. It’s coming soon — like, next week soon. Like, April 24th soon. That doesn’t give me much time to go out and grab a couple pairs of Depends, but I’ll manage.

The best part? It’s a free standalone! The first part probably doesn’t require any explanation — it means you won’t have to drop any cash to play it — and the “standalone” bit means you won’t need to own Half-Life to access it. Who here thinks they’re brave enough to get their Cry of Fear on next week?

Indie Horror Game ‘Among The Sleep’s’ Kickstarter Campaign Is Now Live

I’m excited for it, and it looks like the Kickstarter community is too, as its campaign has only been live for a few hours and it has already collected over $19k. That’s impressive. [Indie Horror Spotlight] Adam Plays ‘Slender: The Arrival’

I like to fancy myself an enthusiast of the horror genre. I’m experienced, desensitized, some might say. For some reason, all that experience goes out the window when I play a game like Slender: The Arrival — the “reimagining” of Mark Hadley’s The Eight Pages, which you probably remember taking the Internet by storm last summer. It’s a collaborative effort between Hadley, Blue Isle Studios, and Marble Hornets creators Joseph DeLage, Troy Wagner and Tim Sutton. It’s terrifying. If you’d like a good laugh, feel free to watch me try and play it after the jump.

Found-Footage Indie Horror Game ‘Paranormal: The Town’ Haunts Kickstarter

Matt Cohen has taken to Kickstarter in search of funds to help complete the development of the first expansion for his indie horror game, dubbed Paranormal: The Town. It takes the randomized horror out of the house and into a small town, which according to the feature list has been inspired by Silent Hill. “If you like Silent Hill, you should be excited-that’s where we’re taking some inspiration from.” You have my attention.

So far, The Town brings with it a high school, graveyard and bar, but they plan on announcing more areas on the game’s Kickstarter page. It’s only a few days into its two month-long campaign and it’s already received a little over one third of its modest $3,000 goal. If you’d like to learn more, I have a Kickstarter video waiting for you after the jump.

6 Downsides To Being A Horror Gamer!

I’ve been a horror fan for most of my life. When my friends were doing whatever it is kids do outside, I was in my room exploring the foggy streets of Silent Hill, or being mercilessly picked on by SHODAN. The atmosphere, monsters, music — I instantly fell in love with it all. Over the years my love for this genre has grown, and so has the list of things I’ve grown to dislike about being a horror gamer.

[GDC 2013] First Impressions: ‘Pulse’

If you didn’t know, the annual Game Developers Conference took place recently in San Francisco and I was on-site for Bloody Disgusting (and for my own benefit, of course). This is the first of three features I’ll be writing on games I first played around with at GDC.

Written by Hayden Dingman, @haydencd

My initial thought when I walked past Pulse at the IGF Pavilion was “Wow, this game is beautiful.” I stood and watched as the person playing threw an object, resulting in a cascade of oranges and greens against a stark black background. I was immediately struck by the resemblance to the Black Velvetopia level of Psychonauts (the one with all the luchadores). I had no idea what the game was, how the mechanics functioned, or anything. I just knew I had to play it.

[Indie Horror Spotlight] ‘DreadOut’ Has A Very Persistent Mosquito

In this very special edition of Indie Horror Spotlight, it’s Adam vs. the Mosquito.

Seriously. If there was a list of annoying video game bugs — the insects, not those of the technical variety — DreadOut’s mosquito would claim every spot on the list. That persistent creature followed me the whole time, and refused to let me lock him in a room so I could have some good scary fun. Other than that fun-sucking mosquito, the demo’s pretty great. You can watch me play it after the jump.
