Progressive rock group Bigelf has announced that they will be releasing Into The Maelstorm on March 4th, 2014 through InsideOut Music. This album is the long awaited follow up to 2008′s Cheat The Gallows. The new album features ex-Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy.
Frontman Damon Fox states, “I think ITM is the best Bigelf record yet and I believe it is a real game changer for the band. It’s gonna put us over the top! Psychedelic cinematic landscapes and melodic prog-doom set the stage for the new album, I cannot wait for fans (old and new) to experience all of its apocalyptic color.”

Devin Townsend is perhaps the very embodiment of the “mad scientist” when it comes to the metal genre. From Ziltoid The Omniscent to his Devin Townsend Quadrilogy, Townsend’s approach to music is less that of a standard album and more of a theatrical experience where each album has a theme, a continuous string that can be followed so as to make the entirety feel like a journey.
And such is the case with The Retinal Circus, Townsend’s new live album, which takes music from the 20+ year history of his work and sets a story behind it, all to the visual and aural delight of a sold out crowd at the Roundhouse in London, England in a special one-night only event.
Now, this retrospective concert has been released and we take a look at it to see if Townsend’s work is as epic as he aimed for of if he strives for the stratosphere only to come crashing and burning to the ground. READ MORE
The upcoming Leprous album Coal is one of my most anticipated records for this year. I was a huge fan of 2011′s Bilateral, placing it as my Album of the Year (alongside White Willow‘s Terminal Twilight). Their amazing songwriting capabilities and rich instrumentation made for an album that I find myself returning to over and over again.
Now the band has given fans a first taste of Coal by streaming a new song entitled “Chronic”, which you can listen to below.
Singer/synth-player Einar Solberg comments about the song: “We’re delighted to finally be able to give you the first taste of our upcoming album ‘Coal’! ‘Coal’ is a melancholic, soulful and very dynamic album. Where ‘Bilateral’ was playful and ‘in-your face’, ‘Coal’ is subtle and floating. ‘Chronic’ however, is of the more dynamic songs of the album. With a heavy basis, the song pinches a nerve Leprous has never before explored.”
Coal comes out May 28th in N. America (May 20th in Europe) via InsideOut Music. READ MORE

King’s X. Kansas. Touring together. Yeah, this is happening. And it’s not coming ANYWHERE NEAR ME!!! DAMMIT!!! But seriously, how awesome of a tour is this? On top of the two legendary prog-rock bands performing, the one-man band That 1 Guy (Mike Silverman) will open on select dates. Tickets go on sale June 15th, unless otherwise noted. Tour dates are listed below.
King’s X will be touring in support of their latest release Live Love In London, a live offering recorded in 2009 at the Electric Ballroom.
Earlier this year, King’s X drummer Jerry Gaskill suffered a severe heart attack and was hospitalized. Now he states, “Not too long ago I was thinking I might not ever get back on a stage, now I’m ready and with the ok from all my doctors. What better way to get back than to tour with the legendary KANSAS. Let’s rock…”
Original Kansas member Richard Williams (guitars): “We are really looking forward to the upcoming shows with KING’S X. They’re a great band and a force to be reckoned with. It’s a tour like this that allows us to dig a little bit deeper into our catalogue and play a few songs that KANSAS fans haven’t heard for a while. It’s gonna be a lot of fun!” READ MORE
The Safety Fire, who recently signed to Inside Out Music, a subsidiary of Century Media Records, have released a lyric video for their song Huge Hammers. This single comes from their upcoming debut full-length album, Grind The Ocean, which has a vague release date of 2012.
You can listen to the song after the jump. The first time I heard it, I wasn’t that keen on it. However, with a few extra spins, I’m now really into the song and can’t wait to hear the full album!
Leprous is a band that you probably haven’t heard of, which is a damn shame. These guys were the backing band for Ihsahn (Emperor) for 2009 and the first half of 2010, if that gives you any clue as to how talented they are. Around since 2001 with an EP, a demo and one full-length album, the band is back with their newest release, Bilateral. Laced with heavy doses of 70’s prog rock but with a thoroughly modern twist, this album rolls up and down like a roller coaster. But is it the awesome speedy ride you crave or the disappointing kiddy ride that you have to ride with your wee young’un? Check after the jump for the answer.
The Shadow Theory is poised to release their first studio album, ‘Behind The Black Veil’, in the US on January 25, 2011. Born from the mind of Devon Graves, whose real name is Buddy Lackey (Deadsoul Tribe), The Shadow Theory was meant to be Devon’s own Frankenstein’s monster, where he sewed together a band from some of the finest musicians he could dig up (HA! Get it?). You can see who is in the band after the jump as well as the track listing.
Lyrically, ‘Behind The Black Veil’ is a concept album about a man who wakes up from one nightmare only to find himself in another nightmare, over and over again. It comes to the point where the man can no longer tell if where the dream ends and reality begins…or if he was ever really dreaming.
You can hear samples of The Shadow Theory at their MySpace. READ MORE
