‘The Evil Within’ Will Bring Horror Back, Says Mikami

There’s no shortage of exciting horror games coming out over the next year or so, with one of the more highly anticipated titles being the freshly unveiled The Evil Within. We know a good deal about it, even though it’s still a ways off. We know it’s the first game by Tango Gameworks, helmed by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami. We know it’s coming to current and next-gen consoles sometime next year, courtesy of Bethesda, and that it sounds terrifying. More after the break.

Eduardo Sanchez Goes On The Record For His Bigoot Movie ‘Exists’!

Eduardo Sanchez is continuing the winning streak he started with Lovely Molly in a big way with his winning segment in V/H/S/2 and Exists, his found footage Bigfoot movie.

Now he’s spoken to The Bigfoot Report (appropriately) about the project. And, if you’ve got about 45 minutes to spare, you could do worse than listening in to their conversation.

Exists follows a group of twentysomethings who take a trip to a cabin deep in the wooded wilderness and are methodically hunted by a Bigfoot-like beast. Brian Steele, Dora Madison Burge, Samuel Davis, Roger Edwards, Chris Osborn and Denise Williamson star. READ MORE

5 Questions With ‘Thale’ Director ‘Aleksander Nordaas’!

XLrator Media is in the middle of its rollout for writer/director Aleksander NordaasThale. It opens in theaters tomorrow and hits DVD/VOD on April 23rd. I was surprised by the film, which takes an intimate look at a mythical creature in an intense, confined space. I recently hopped on the phone with Nordaas to talk about his approach to working in such a tight spot, whether or not he grew up with the lugend of the Huldra and how he coaxed such a visceral performance out of Thale herself, Silje Reinamo.

Starring Morten Andresen, Erlend Nervold, Jon Sigve Skard, and Silje Reinamo as Thale, “Two crime-scene cleaners discover a mythical, tailed female creature in a concealed cellar. She never utters a word, unable to tell her story, but the pieces of the puzzle soon come together: she’s been held captive for decades for reasons soon to surface.

[Interview] Dallas Roberts On The Scope Of “The Walking Dead” And The Mazzara/Gimple Showrunner Switch

Airing tomorrow. Sunday, March 31 is the season finale of The Walking Dead, episode 316 “Welcome to the Tombs.” I figured this would be as good of an occasion as any to post my interview with star Dallas Roberts who plays Milton Mamet on the show. We talked about the longterm effects of being on “The Walking Dead” and how the cast reacted to switching showrunners from Glen Mazzara to Scott Gimple for the upcoming fourth season.

In the ongoing third season, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and his fellow survivors continue to seek refuge in a desolate and post-apocalyptic world and soon discover that there are greater forces to fear than just the walking dead. The struggle to survive has never been so perilous. Season 3 also introduced new characters, including the Governor (David Morrissey) and fan-favorite Michonne (Danai Gurira), along with her zombie pets.

The show was recently renewed for its fourth season. Head inside to see if Roberts can talk about it! READ MORE

[Interview] Catching Up With Dead Sara’s Emily Armstrong

About two weeks ago, I went with some friends to see Muse perform at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, MI. While they put on a pretty entertaining performance, the show was, in my opinion, stolen by the opening act, Los Angeles rockers Dead Sara. With fierce, driving riffs from guitarist Siouxsie Medley, thumping bass lines courtesy of Chris Null, Sean Friday’s thunderous drums, the band had the audience throwing their hands in the air and cheering wildly. Singer Emily Armstrong’s voice blasted the crowd, soaring high at points while other times taking on a raspy, ferocious, vicious snarl, ultimately ending up as a highlight to the performance.

Tonight is the band’s last show with Muse at Las Vegas’s Mandalay Bay Resort.

Below you can find our exclusive one-on-one interview with Emily where we talk the tour with Muse, life on the road, and the future plans of the band. READ MORE

[TV] Departing “Walking Dead” Showrunner Glen Mazzara On This Season’s Bombshell Finale And The Upcoming Season 4

As we mentioned earlier, AMC announced today that the cast and crew of The Walking Dead return to Atlanta, Georgia on Monday, May 6th to begin production on season four. Season 3 is currently about to wrap up, but it’s also considered the strongest run in the series to date. And it’s certainly the highest rated, which is why it’s a bit of a mystery that showrunner Glen Mazzara is leaving and handing the reigns over to Scott M. Gimple.

While Gimple has been a writer on the show for years, it’s still a shocking move that caught many off guard. Luckily Scenestr caught up with Mazzara and got quite a few quotes that shed some light on the situation and what it means for the (already written) 4th season of “The Walking Dead.”

5 Questions With J.K. Simmons Of ‘Dark Skies’

Much of the Dark Skies promotional campaign has focussed on stars Keri Russell and Josh Hamilton. But the horror film has another key player, J.K. Simmons (Juno, Burn After Reading, Jennifer’s Body) plays Edwin Pollard, an “expert” on the phenomena that the Barrett family is experiencing. Simmons is one of my favorite performers, so I jumped at the chance to speak with him.

In the supernatural thriller directed by Scott Charles Stewart “Follows a young family living in the suburbs. As husband and wife Daniel and Lacey Barret witness an escalating series of disturbing events involving their family, their safe and peaceful home quickly unravels. When it becomes clear that the Barret family is being targeted by an unimaginably terrifying and deadly force, Daniel and Lacey take matters in their own hands to solve the mystery of what is after their family.

[Interview] Artist Christopher Shy Discusses ‘Dead Space: Liberation’ And The Evolution Of The Necromorph

Back in 2010, just a month before the release of Dead Space 2, Blackwatch Comics released a graphic novel that bridged the gap between the first and second game — or more specifically, the gap between Dead Space and the animated film Aftermath, which took place before Dead Space 2. It was horrifying, and for me, one of the things that really stuck with me even two years later is the gorgeous illustrations of Christopher Shy. His work took Salvage to a whole new level, and thankfully, he’s returned to lend his talents to Dead Space: Liberation, a second graphic novel that acts as an interquel between the second game and Dead Space 3 (which is out now!). Christopher was kind enough to answer a few of my questions about the new graphic novel (also available now), the art of the Necromorphs, and much more. Read what he had to say after the break!

There are a myriad zombie games releasing over the next year, including Day Z, The War Z, The Walking Dead, Human Element, and many more, yet one of the more exciting titles is the Wii U exclusive ZombiU. As our first look at what survival horror on the Wii U could be like, there’s a lot riding on this game’s ability to prove that Nintendo’s next console can be a major player in the horror genre, as opposed to its predecessor, which despite having no shortage of horror games release on it, never managed to birth any real successes. It looks, and perhaps most importantly, sounds incredible, and that’s thanks in large part to composer Cris Velasco. Director Nicholas McCarthy Ties Up Loose Ends On ‘The Pact’

If you haven’t watched The Pact, you may want to skip this until you do. SPOILERS FOLLOW.

Otherwise: I disagreed with some of the more critical reviews out on The Pact. I found it, above all imperfections, to be an effective, well executed chiller. After its recent DVD release, however, several people I’d chatted with were expressing a similar point of view, and confusion. “It was creepy as F—, but what the hell was with the ending?” Usually I’m pretty good at figuring out these subtleties, but after some hard thought, I had to agree – while a couple of the shock sequences certainly took my breath away, the film left me with some questions that I couldn’t answer.

What was “the pact”?
What was with the blue eye/green eye – was there a meaning behind that?
Was Judas still alive?

I got in touch with the film’s director, Nicholas McCarthy, and asked him directly. It opened up a great conversation about the head-in-the-curtain hotel scene, some films that inspired these moments, and above all, some very honest and direct answers to the questions left behind. READ MORE

[Interview] Director Steven C. Miller On Making A New Killer Santa For ‘Silent Night’, Going ‘Under The Bed’

On November 30th, Anchor Bay Films presents Silent Night on screens in ten major U.S. metropolitan areas. That following tuesday, December 4th, the Blu-ray/DVD combo and DVD will be available to unwrap nationwide. Bonus features include “SILENT NIGHT: Behind The Scenes” featurette and Deleted Scenes. The film is directed by Steven C. Miller (Automaton Transfusion, Under the Bed, The Aggression Scale).

I recently had a chance to hop on the phone with Miller and we talked about his approach to balancing the old and the new in this loose remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night, from crafting the kills and to assembling the cast. We also talk a bit about his other new feature, Under The Bed, which is due in theaters next year.

The film’s cast includes Malcolm McDowell (Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Easy A), Jaime King (Sin City, My Bloody Valentine 3D), Donal Logue (Shark Night 3D, Blade), Lisa Marie (Sleepy Hollow), Brendan Fehr (Final Destination, X-Men First Class), and Ellen Wong (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World).

McDowell and King star as a small-town sheriff and deputy on the hunt for a murderous Santa Claus terrorizing their community on Christmas Eve. But with the streets full of Santas for the annual Christmas parade, the killer is hiding in plain sight. He’s made his list, checked it twice, and the naughty are going to pay with their lives.

[Interview] Eli Roth Talks RZA, Building The World Of ‘The Man With The Iron Fists’ And What To Expect From ‘The Green Inferno’!

Even though The Man With the Iron Fists is billed as a “Quentin Tarantino Presents” project, Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel, Hostel 2) and RZA are the clear creative forces behind the film. They wrote the project together (based on an original story by RZA), working for years to create the world and mythology of the film. As a producer, Roth was on the film’s set in China every day helping RZA through his directorial debut.

In the film, “Since his arrival in China’s Jungle Village, the town’s blacksmith (RZA) has been forced by radical tribal factions to create elaborate tools of destruction. When the clans’ brewing war boils over, the stranger channels an ancient energy to transform himself into a human weapon. As he fights alongside iconic heroes and against soulless villains, one man must harness this power to become savior of his adopted people.

[Interview] Director Scott Derrickson On Creating The Unsettling Moments Of ‘Sinister’

Sinister hits theaters on October 12th. Ethan Hawke, James Ranson and Juliet Rylance all star in this super creepy film from Exorcism of Emily Rose director Scott Derrickson.

In the film, Ethan Hawk plays Ellison, a true crime novelist whose glory days are behind him (one hit and two flops in ten years). His past successes enable and embolden his pursuit of future triumphs, while his current failures have eroded his finances and the strength of his family unit. Not to mention the fact that he’s just moved them into a very recent crime scene.

While Brad’s review was mixed, I found a lot to like in the film. To that end, I hopped on the phone with Derrickson a few weeks back to discuss his approach to creating what will soon be known as the film’s signature moments. We also discussed the motivations that keep Hawke’s character in the house (and we touch upon Sinister‘s sly reference to a certain 1988 Dennis Quaid movie – though you’ll have to figure out what that moment is for yourself).

[Interview] Tim Burton On Black And White, Science And The Array Of Monsters In ‘Frankenweenie’

Frankenweenie is easily the best Tim Burton movie in a decade. I was almost braced to dislike it, so it was a wonderful surprise to find myself concurring with Brad’s glowing review. In the film, a young Victor conducts a science experiment to bring his beloved dog Sparky back to life, only to face unintended, sometimes monstrous, consequences.

Accompanied by a few other journalists, I sat down with Burton last week to talk about the differences between the feature-length Frankenweenie and his 1984 short of the same name. We also discussed the film’s embrace of science and horror history.

The voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands), Catherine O’Hara (Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas), Martin Short (Mars Attacks!) and Martin Landau (Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow), while Charlie Tahan and Atticus Shaffer were later added. Over 200 puppets and sets were created for the film, and that several of the character names—Victor, Elsa Van Helsing, Edgar “E” Gore and Mr. Burgermeister — were inspired by classic horror films.

[Interview] ‘Frankenweenie’ Screenwriter John August On Being Pro-Science In A Harsh Political Climate

I recently sat down with screenwriter John August (Big Fish, Go) to talk about how he approached the expansion of Burton’s original 25 minute short into a feature length piece. We also discuss some of the amazing speeches made in the film by Martin Landau’s no BS teacher Mr. Rzykruski. [Interview] Director Jennifer Lynch Talks ‘Chained’, ‘A Fall From Grace’ And ‘The Monster Next Door’

If you’re a fan of director Jennifer Lynch (Boxing Helena, Surveillance, Hisss), her new film Chained hits Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD today – October 2nd – from Anchor Bay Films.

I recently hopped on the phone with Lynch and we talked about the challenges of making an intense serial killer film, the process of casting Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, Men In Black, “Law and Order: Criminal Intent”) and her upcoming projects. It turns out she’s taking a turn into lighter fare (after her very next film, A Fall From Grace) with the Monster Squad-esque The Monster Next Door.

In Chained, “Coming home from a routine trip to the movies, eight-year-old Tim (Bird) and his mother, Sarah (Ormond) are picked up by a psychopathic cab driver named Bob (D’Onofrio). It ends up being their last ride together. Bob murders the young boy’s mother and keeps Tim as his unwilling protégée, making him clean up the mess following each murder he commits. After a couple of aborted escape attempts, Bob chains Tim – now renamed Rabbit — allowing just enough length to move freely within the house. As the years pass, Bob starts instructing Rabbit, teaching him anatomy and human behavior. Now a teenager, Rabbit (Eamon Farren, X: Night of Vengeance) is slowly being pressed by Bob to start his own homicidal spree. Slowly but surely, he must soon choose whether to follow in Bob’s serial killer footsteps or make one final, desperate attempt to break free…”

The cast also includes Gina Phillips (Jeepers Creepers, “Ally McBeal”) Conor Leslie (“90210”), Evan Bird (“The Killing”), with Jake Weber (Dawn of the Dead, “Medium”) and Julia Ormand (My Week With Marilyn, “Mad Men,” The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). [Special Report] More From The Bulgaria Set Of ‘Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines’ And Part Two Of Our Interview With Director Declan O’Brien!

With Wrong Turn 5: Bloodlines, director and writer Declan O’Brien (Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead, Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings, Sharktopus) returns to helm of his third film in the franchise, with Doug Bradley (best known for his role of “Pinhead” in the Hellraiser films) in a pivotal role. Camilla Arfwedson, Roxanne McKee, Simon Ginty, Oliver Hoare, Amy Lennox, Duncan Wisbey, Kyle Redmond-Jones, Peter Brooke, Emilia Klayn, Rosie Holden and Andrew Bone round out the cast.

In the next chilling chapter of ‘Wrong Turn,’ a small West Virginia town is hosting the legendary Mountain Man Festival on Halloween, where throngs of costumed partygoers gather for a wild night of music and mischief. But an inbred family of hillbilly cannibals kill all the fun when they trick and treat themselves to a group of visiting college students who are dying for a good time.

Guillermo Del Toro Talks ‘Pacific Rim’ And ‘Hellboy 3′

We all know Guillermo Del Toro is an insanely busy guy. When I caught up with him last night on the red carpet for the Eyegore Awards (which kicked off this year’s Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood), it was no exception. He was being hounded by everybody. But I did get a few tidbits on the upcoming Pacific Rim and a small update on Hellboy 3

Regarding Pacific Rim, he said that despite the big-budget he’s had an extraordinary amount of freedom. “It’s gonna be great! I’m 48 years old and this is the best experience I’ve ever had making a movie! In spite of my age I feel like a 12 year old when I go to the sets. It’s going to be a fun, fun, fun experience.

And Hellboy 3. The eternal question. “We’re trying! We try and we try and we try. It’s an expensive proposition and it’s not easy!” Yeesh! Given that Del Toro has an insanely full dance card and the uphill battle that Hellboy 3 seems to be, I’d say it’s possible but not likely to happen anytime soon. Maybe after Pacific Rim (if it goes bonkers at the box office and Del Toro can find a spare year to work on it).

This year’s Halloween Horror Nights dates are September 21, 22, 28, 29 and October 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28 and 31.
