[Interview] Director Mark Tonderai On Building The ‘House At The End Of The Street’

Relativity Media releases House at the End of the Street this Friday, September 21st. The PG-13 thriller from director Mark Tonderai (Hush) stars Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games) Max Thieriot (My Soul To Take) and Elizabeth Shue (Leaving Las Vegas, Adventures In Babysitting).

Myself and a few other journalists sat down with Tonderai a few days ago and spoke to him at length about the film, how he came to cast Lawrence and Thieriot and the intensive “bible” he created for the film. We also talked about his love of Hitchock, which is evident when you see the film.

In the film, “Seeking a fresh start, newly divorced Sarah (Elisabeth Shue) and her daughter Elissa (Jennifer Lawrence) find the house of their dreams in a small, upscale, rural town. But when startling and unexplainable events begin to happen, Sarah and Elissa learn the town is in the shadows of a chilling secret. Years earlier, in the house next door, a daughter killed her parents in their beds, and disappeared – leaving only a brother, Ryan (Max Thieriot), as the sole survivor. Against Sarah’s wishes, Elissa begins a relationship with the reclusive Ryan – and the closer they get, the deeper they’re all pulled into a mystery more dangerous than they ever imagined.READ MORE

[TIFF '12 Interview] ‘The Lords Of Salem’ Stars Sheri Moon Zombie & Jeff Daniel Phillips

Whether it’s cast or crew, Writer/Director Rob Zombie loves to stick to a core group. Like Quentin Tarantino, he enjoys casting some long forgotten talent from the genre titles he grew up on and admired. Zombie cleverly goes against our expectations and previous experiences with a certain actor and uses him or her in a refreshingly unexpected way. His wife and muse, Sheri Moon Zombie is the one constant in every picture he has made. Her involvement in his work has always caused a stir among genre fans. This doesn’t seem to faze Zombie a bit since Sheri is lead in his latest, The Lords of Salem.

She plays local DJ Heidi Hawthorne. Along with her co-hosts Herman Whitey Salvador (Jeff Daniel Phillips) and Herman Jackson (Ken Foree), they play a mysterious vinyl on air by a band called The Lords which will soon put the town and its inhabitants on a collision course with its disturbing past.

At TIFF ’12, I had the opportunity to sit down and discuss the film with actors Sheri and Jeff. READ MORE

[TIFF '12 Interview] ‘No One Lives’ Director Ryuhei Kitamura

When the WWE Films logo appears before a film, I keep my expectations in check. While I’ll admit that the Kane vehicle, See No Evil is in my guilty pleasure list, the majority I’ve seen are straight-to-video fare at its laziest. Like most DTV, they’re an attempt to cash in on whatever the fad may be at the moment and hope that fans looking for a quick fix won’t mind. From the offset, No One Lives (review) comes across as just that. The attempt at “clever” dialogue is consistently laughable but once the film is suddenly steered in a different direction at the end of the first act, my attention was grabbed. For the remainder of its duration, No One Lives is a creatively violent, trashy ride in the way the Friday the 13th movies are. If you watch it for what it is, fun will be had.

The skillful directing of Ryuhei Kitamura (Midnight Meat Train, Versus) is the main reason why I ignored the film’s obvious issues. I had the pleasure of chatting with him at TIFF ’12, where the film was getting its premiere. I asked him what drew him to the script. “I started reading it. First I felt; oh okay, No One Lives, everybody dies. Girl running in the woods, a couple of gangsters, okay another torture porn kind of movie which I love to watch but didn’t want to do myself. Then there’s a twist and turn in the script and I simply felt: wow this is a non-stop ride and it’s a fun popcorn project which was very different from the movie I did, Midnight Meat Train. That was much more twisted and a philosophical. So this was to me a fun, straightforward genre movie almost like the movies from the 80’s.READ MORE

[Video Interview] Milla Jovovich On How Alice Has Changed And The Increased Scope Of ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’

Paul W.S. Anderson-directed Resident Evil: Retribution 3D hits theaters at the end of this week and I recently had the chance to sit down with the film’s star Milla Jovovich to discuss the film’s increased scope, how Alice has changed over the years and the “other idea” that led to this sequel’s inception.

Check out our Resident Evil Hub for more Retribution!

The film also stars Sienna Guillory, Colin Salmon, Michelle Rodriguez, Shawn Roberts, Boris Kodjoe, Johann Urb, Oded Fehr, Kevin Durand and Li Bingbing. It arrives in theaters September 14.

The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race’s last and only hope, Alice (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella’s most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.

Brad Pitt On ‘World War Z’ Reshoots

So when Prometheus and “Lost” scribe Damon Lindelof broke a new ending to the Marc Forster-directed Brad Pitt-starrer World War Z, he didn’t actually have time to revise the script. Those duties fell to The Cabin In The Woods co-writer/helmer Drew Goddard (who also adapted the upcoming Steven Spielberg film Robopocalypse). And now? The film has entered its 7 week long reshooting stage. HeyUGuys caught up with Pitt in London – and he kind of shrugs it off as being a natural part of a “massive movie”.

The adaptation, starring Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, Matthew Fox and David Morse, revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself. Enos plays Gerry’s wife Karen Lane; Kertesz is his comrade in arms, Segen. It was slated for release on June 21, 2013.

[Interview] We Talk To Matisyahu About Demons, ‘The Possession’ And Introduce Him To The ‘Evil Dead’!

Tomorrow, August 31st Lionsgate will open their haunted dibbuk box when they release The Possession, the Sam Raimi/Ghost House Pictures produced supernatural chiller, in theaters everywhere. Directed by Ole Bornedal, the film stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick and Natasha Calis as a broken family that has a lot more than divorce to contend with when Calis’ character is possessed by a demon. At that point they turn to Tzadok, played by Matisyahu, for help.

I recently sat down with Matisyahu on a tour stop in Los Angeles. We discussed his transition from music to film, the role of demons in the Jewish religion, and the Evil Dead. It turns out he’s never seen any of the movies! Now, I’m including this because it’s a cool exchange. Matisyahu’s interests are likely different than yours or mine, which I respect. In fact, I was struck by his sense of ease and his genial nature. Never judge anyone for being new to horror, just turn them on to it! Which is hopefully what we did here!

The film, “is the terrifying story of how one family must unite in order to survive the wrath of an unspeakable evil. Clyde (Morgan) and Stephanie Brenek (Sedgwick) see little cause for alarm when their youngest daughter Em becomes oddly obsessed with an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. But as Em’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic, the couple fears the presence of a malevolent force in their midst, only to discover that the box was built to contain a dibbuk, a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.

[Interview] ‘ParaNorman’ Directors Chris Butler And Sam Fell On Pushing The Boundaries Of The “Kid’s Movie”

Focus Features releases ParaNorman on Friday and one of the many things it has going for it (along with its amazing animation) is its message about being yourself. I recently hopped on the phone with directors Chris Butler (who also wrote the film) and Sam Fell and we talked about their approach to the film’s message – and if they thought that there was anything too gross that they might have to cut.

The film takes place in “a small town that comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. David Duchovny Weighs The Possibility Of ‘The X-Files 3′

A few months back TheX-Files writer Frank Spotnitz discussed his strong desire to do a new film in the series saying,”There is a very active and relentless fan campaign for a last movie. I do feel like it would be a terrible shame if that didn’t happen. It feels wrong not to give it an ending around the alien colonisation of earth. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson feel the same.

Now Duchovny’s speaking for himself and he backs this up 100%. He told Collider, “That book doesn’t close until somebody dies, really. One of the greatnesses of the show was its open-endedness. It was about possibility. It wasn’t about closure. It just couldn’t be. There is no such thing as that story ever ending. Those characters are forever searching. That’s what they do. Even if we’re not watching them, they’re out there, in some dimension. Mulder and Scully are still doing their thing ‘cause that’s their nature…I would love to do another film, or more. I think we’re all game for it. I know I’m kind of perplexed that Fox isn’t more [enthusiastic].

I can kind of see where Fox is coming from. 2008′s I Want To Believe only grossed $20M compared to Fight The Future‘s $83M (not adjusted for inflation). But Duchovny has a reasonable answer for I Want To Believe‘s financial failure. Head inside for more. READ MORE

[BD Interview] ‘The Exorcist’ Director William Friedkin On Avoiding Formula, And The Studios, In His New Movie ‘Killer Joe’

In theaters today from LD Entertainment is Killer Joe, an insanely fun and disturbing movie directed by the man behind The French Connection, The Exorcist, Sorcerer, To Live And Die In LA and BugWilliam Friedkin. The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church and Gina Gershon and is based on a play by Pulitzer and Tony Award winner Tracy Letts.

I recently spoke with Friedkin about crafting Joe, his sixteenth film, and his decision to make it outside of the studio system. We also talk about the film business in general and which of today’s filmmakers he finds inspiring. Oh, and he also weighs in on the futility of even comparing movies like Citizen Kane and Vertigo. It’s a long interview (we even talk Near Dark) but, when you get a chance to speak to someone with this kind of body of work, you want to go for the big picture.

When 22-year-old Chris (Emile Hirsch) finds himself in debt to a drug lord, he hires a hit man to dispatch his mother, whose $50,000 life insurance policy benefits his sister Dottie (Juno Temple). Chris finds Joe Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a creepy, crazy Dallas cop who moonlights as a contract killer. When Chris can’t pay Joe upfront, Joe sets his sight on Dottie as collateral for the job. The contract killer and his hostage develop an unusual bond. Like from a modern-day, twisted fairy tale, “Killer Joe” Cooper becomes the prince to Dottie’s Cinderella.

Exclusive! ‘[REC 4]: Apocalypse’ Will Not Be Found Footage!

Magnet Releasing has scheduled [REC] 3: Genesis for release next week and I spoke with director Paco Plaza today about that film. While Plaza and Jaume Balagueró co-directed the first two installments, they decided to split up parts 3 and 4, with Plaza taking Genesis and Balagueró tackling [REC] 4: Apocalypse.

While the bulk of our interview (which will hit next week in its entirety) concerned the super-fun Genesis, Plaza was able to talk a bit about the fourth installment. There’s a moment in [REC] 3, which is a prequel to the first two films, where the camera gets put down and it switches into a more traditional film. Apparently Balagueró’s [REC] 4 takes it a step further by not being found footage at all – even though it picks up moments after [REC] 2 ends.

Per Plaza, “It’s true that it takes place after ‘[REC] 2′. And it is going to be shot [differently]. It is not going back to found footage, it is going to be a cinematic narrative. A conventional film. I don’t want to say much more, I can’t say too much. I don’t want to get in trouble!

For you found footage fans, don’t worry. When Plaza puts the POV-cam down in [REC] 3, he’s not dissing the genre. “It’s not that I wanted to make a statement. There are still excellent found footage films like ‘Paranormal Activity 3′. It’s not saying ‘found footage is over’ or anything. I just wanted to surprise the audience and deliver something different [after the first two films].
