[TV] New “Bates Motel” Featurette Has First Look At Footage From The Show!

“Bates Motel,” the Psycho prequel from “Lost”‘s Carlton Cuse and “Friday Night Lights”‘ Kerry Ehrin, has just debuted a new featurette that highlights some actual footage from the show (the first real footage we’ve seen) along with some cast and crew interviews. If anything, it’s probably our best look yet at the tone and visual aesthetic we might be getting when this thing premieres next year.

“Bates Motel” serves as a contemporary prequel to the genre-defining film, “Psycho,” and promises to give viewers and intimate portrayal of how Norman Bates’ (Freddie Highmore) psyche unravels through his teenage years and just how deeply intricate his relationship to his mother, Norma (Vera Farmiga), truly is.

Freddie Highmore, Vera Farmiga, Max Thieriot, Nestor Carbonell, Mike Vogel, Nicola Pletz and Olivia Cooke also star. A&E is currently filming the series in Vancouver, for an early 2013 premiere.

‘V/H/S’ Is Available On DVD And Blu-ray Today! The Filmmakers Talk About Their Segments!

Magnolia releases V/H/S (write your reviews) DVD/Blu-ray TODAY, December 4th! Extras include deleted scenes, a featurette on the visual effects, a behind the scenes featurette, an AXS TV: A Look at V/H/S feature, a filmmakers’ commentary and trailers. If you’re not into physical media, it’s also available on iTunes – though I’m not sure if all of the extras come with that version.

In the film “When a group of petty criminals is hired by a mysterious party to retrieve a rare piece of found footage from a rundown house in the middle of nowhere, they soon realize that the job isn’t going to be as easy as they thought. In the living room, a lifeless body holds court before a hub of old television sets, surrounded by stacks upon stacks of VHS tapes. As they search for the right one, they are treated to a seemingly endless number of horrifying videos, each stranger than the last.

To celebrate we’ve got some (in most cases) new/previously unpublished quotes from filmmakers Adam Wingard (You’re Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You’re Next, Dead Birds, Red Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), and Radio Silence.

Head inside for some brief reflections on their segments. READ MORE

[Video Interview] The Cast Of ‘The Possession’ Talks Portraying A Broken Family And Their Most Intense Moments On Set

On Friday, August 31st Lionsgate will open their haunted dibbuk box when they release The Possession, the Sam Raimi/Ghost House Pictures produced supernatural chiller, in theaters everywhere. Directed by Ole Bornedal, the film stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick and Natasha Calis as a broken family that has a lot more than divorce to contend with when Calis’ character, “Em”, is possessed by a demon.

I recently sat down with the cast to talk about how they conveyed their shattered family dynamic and what parts of the film’s final, intense, moments proved difficult to film. Calis and Morgan also spoke about how they were able to craft one of the film’s most upsetting moments.

The film, “is the terrifying story of how one family must unite in order to survive the wrath of an unspeakable evil. Clyde (Morgan) and Stephanie Brenek (Sedgwick) see little cause for alarm when their youngest daughter Em becomes oddly obsessed with an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. But as Em’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic, the couple fears the presence of a malevolent force in their midst, only to discover that the box was built to contain a dibbuk, a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.

[Interview] Talking The Amazing Restoration Of ‘Jaws’, One Of The Best Horror Movies Ever

Jaws – the landmark motion picture that still makes audiences afraid to go in the water – comes to Blu-ray for the first time ever on August 14th, 2012. Featuring an all-new, digitally remastered and fully restored picture, as well as 7.1 surround sound, the Jaws Blu-ray Combo Pack with DVD, and a Digital Copy is truly a must own.

I’ve had a chance to check out the Blu, along with its special features, and it really is like seeing the film through new eyes. Or seeing it for the first time (I say this as someone who has seen Jaws at least 50 times). The colors are extraordinary and the detail and clarity is mind boggling. I’d say this transfer equals the Blu of Ridley Scott’s Alien, it’s amazing how a pair of films that are over 30 years old can look better than anything I’ve seen this summer.

I recently had a chance to discuss the restoration with screenwriter Carl Gottlieb (who also played “Meadows” in the film) along with Mike Daruty, the SVP of Universal Technical Operations. I also spoke with the film’s production designer Joe Alves, whom I managed to convince through the coure of our interview that Jaws is indeed horror.

Head inside to check it out! I’ve also included a ton of stuff below the interview: Two examples of the new transfer, a list of bonus features, clips and the Blu box art. READ MORE

[Video Interview] Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce And Logan Marshall-Green On ‘Prometheus’

Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is only a couple of days away from its US release and I highly recommend it. I also recommend that you treat it as a unique new film rather than an Alien movie so you have a chance to be pleasantly surprised. As I continue to work on my spoiler heavy review (which I’m posting for discussion purposes right after the film’s US release), I’m unloading a few more exclusive video interviews.

Today we have Charlize Theron (Meredith Vickers) and Guy Pearce (Peter Weyland), as well as a separate interview with Logan Marshall-Green (who plays Charlie Holloway). It was an interesting challenge to interview both Theron and Pearce without spoiling anything – something that will be clear once you’ve seen the film – so we stick to lighter territory although Theron does give some interesting insight into her character. Green also has some cool thoughts about his character’s somewhat antagonistic relationship with Michael Fassbender’s David.

With ‘Prometheus,’ Scott creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Yesterday I posted my video interview with Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender, and over the next few days I’ll be posting pieces with Damon Lindelof and Ridley Scott. Prometheus opens in the US on June 8th (click here for Brad’s spoiler light review). Head inside to check out the interviews (and beware of mild spoilers I suppose). READ MORE

‘Underworld: Awakening 3D’ Made $25 Million This Weekend, What Did You Think?

Underworld: Awakening 3D Made $25 Million This Weekend, What Did You Think?

I know a TON of you guys saw Underworld: Awakening 3D this weekend. It just grossed an estimated $25 million, outpacing Rise Of The Lycans by a significant margin.

While I didn’t love the movie (I’m not a huge Underworld fan), I did think it was the best in the series. From my review.

There’s almost a remarkable spark that accompanies this synergy of people cutting the bullsh*t and consciously embracing the humble simplicity of making a film designed only to be the very best kind of this type of movie. And that’s exactly what ‘Underworld: Awakening’ is. Sure I’m grading on a curve here, but it’s easily the best ‘Underworld’ movie. I was actually entertained throughout its appropriately brief 88 minute running time.

But what did you guys think? Write in with your review now!

Also, given this film’s box office performance and its ‘A-’ Cinemascore (which means that audiences liked it enough that we can expect it to continue to do well next weekend, unlike Devil Inside), I’d say it’s more than likely we’ll be seeing a 5TH Underworld film – even though one has yet to be officially announced.

Hit up the comments to let us know what you’d like to see in the 5th one, or if you just want the series to die already! READ MORE

[Video Review] Don Allen’s Take On ‘Underworld: Awakening 3D’

[Video Review] Don Allens Take On Underworld: Awakening 3D

Underworld: Awakening 3D hit theaters this weekend and Don Allen checks in with his video review.

Don liked the film a hair more than I did (my review), but we both agree that Awakening makes a wise decision by shackling off the heavy handed romance and mythology heading straight into the action.

Don’t forget to write in with your review here!

In theaters this weekend, “Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrioress Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.

Directed by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, this sequel stars Kate Beckinsale, Stephen Rea, Michael Ealy, Theo James, India Eisley, and Charles “I want the Ajanti Dagger!” Dance.

[Interview] Kate Beckinsale Talks Returning For ‘Underworld Awakening 3D’ & The Updated ‘Total Recall’

[Interview] Kate Beckinsale Talks Returning For Underworld Awakening 3D & The Updated Total Recall

Last week I had the chance to sit down with the stars of Underworld: Awakening 3D, Kate Beckinsale chiefly among them.

The new film adds a wrinkle to the mix by including actual humans in the ongoing battle between Vampires and Lycans. I talked to the newer members of the cast (Theo James, India Eisley and Michael Ealy) about joining the long running franchise. Meanwhile, Kate Beckinsale seemed quite happy to be back and was able to go into some detail regarding the tone of the upcoming ‘Total Recall’ remake.

I was also surprised to hear that co-directors Marlind & Stein literally alternated days on set, trading off which one of them got to call the shots depending on the day. Judging from these interviews, it would appear that process went shockingly smoothly.
