[Set Report] Hostel: Part III Delivers An Even Darker Sin City

I arrived in Detroit to find it a ghost town. A major American city, emptied of people, skeletal skyscrapers jutting blankly against the callous sky. I was there to visit the set of Hostel: Part III, the upcoming direct-to-DVD sequel which arrives in stores two days after Christmas.

This time around, the setting was relocated from the strange and barbaric Slovokian village of the first two films to the more familiar confines of Las Vegas, also barbaric but in its own, distinctly American, way (the production was planning on shooting in Sin City for a total of four days following their departure from Detroit)… READ MORE

[Set Visit] A Trip to Gepetto’s Lair in ‘Cassadaga’!

[Set Visit] A Trip to Gepettos Lair in Cassadaga!

Last October, Tim Anderson and I trekked over to Sanford, FL to visit the set of Anthony DiBlasi’s Cassadaga, which premieres this coming Saturday, October 22 at the Screamfest Horror Film Festival in CA. The film – which centers on a deaf girl who attempts to contact her late sister’s spirit during a seance but instead attracts the avenging ghost of a murdered woman – looks to have some fairly intense moments judging by what we saw during our trip.

The two days we were on set for, which also happened to be the final two days of principal photography, were filled with things we can’t really get too specific about – like what exactly is going on in Gepetto’s lair – but Tim did a really respectable job of giving you guys an idea of what you’re in for without completely ruining any third act plot points.

Read past the break for Tim’s set visit report and check back shortly for interviews with the film’s producers, Scott Poiley and Bruce Wood, as well Anthony DiBlasi.

[Interview] Dennis Muren, Phil Tippett And John Rosengrant Talk ‘Jurassic Park’ Special Effects & Blu-Ray!!

JurassicJump10511 [Interview] Dennis Muren, Phil Tippett And John Rosengrant Talk Jurassic Park Special Effects & Blu Ray!!

In the days before I could track every film’s progress on the internet, only two movies stand out in my memory as having built a real sense of anticipation in my youth. Not just the awareness that the the film would be in theaters, but a yearning that stretched out over months and months (the kind that, healthily or not, many of us are now able to sustain year-round with dozens and dozens of films).

The two movies, in my memory at least, that stand out in that regard are T2: Judgement Day and Jurassic Park. When Jurassic Park came out on June 11th 1993, it already felt like a watershed moment. Sure, a lot of that had to do with print and television handling the hyping duties that are now left largely to the online world – but I still trusted that I was getting something special. The sense that there was some alchemy that had happened on Spielberg’s film that allowed for the truly magical had been imprinted on me. Unlike today where you often have to dial out hype completely to gain an enjoyable perspective on a film, I did not leave that theater disappointed. At all. The hype led me into the theater, but the film supported it.

A few weeks back I was able to speak with three of the principal members of the creative team that brought the wonderful creatures of Jurassic Park (back to) life. Dennis Muren of ILM (Star Wars, T2, Super 8), Phil Tippett (Robocop, Starship Troopers) and John Rosengrant of Legacy Effects (a veteran of Stan Winston Studios, Rosengrant worked alongside Winston on the Jurassic Park films and many others). In anticipation of the October 25th Blu-ray release of the Jurassic Park Trilogy, the three sat together to discuss how they worked together to create the effects for the iconic film.

As a bonus – I also sat down with Ariana Richards, who portrayed young computer hacker Lex Murphy in the first film (and briefly in the second), to get a sense of what it was like to be a child onset amidst the chaos of the shoot.

[BD Selects] Video From the Red Carpet Premiere of ‘The Woman’!

[BD Selects] Video From the Red Carpet Premiere of The Woman!

Last night, Bloody Disgusting Selects hosted the Hollywood red carpet premiere of Lucky McKee’s The Woman, which opens in limited theaters on October 14 (indie theaters, AMC theaters). The film, starring Angela Bettis, is a disturbing tale of torture and dirty little secrets that can haunt any seemingly harmless neighborhood.

The below video will take you to the event with Bloody Disgusting’s Jill Kill who steps on the red carpet with director Lucky McKee, star Pollyanna McIntosh, among others.

The story follows a successful country lawyer who captures and attempts to “civilize” the last remaining member of a violent clan that has roamed the Northeast in the wild for decades, thereby putting the lives of his family in extreme jeopardy.

Starring Pollyanna McIntosh, Sean Bridgers and Angela Bettis, the film prompted furious debates and walkouts during its world premiere in the Park City at Midnight program at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Reports surfaced of people becoming sick while watching the graphic scenes and one irate Sundance audience member went so far as to say THE WOMAN “ought to be confiscated, burned. There’s no value in showing this to anyone.” Whether a “wonderfully bizarre tale” or an “inhumane degradation of women,” you’ll have to decide for yourself.

[Video Interview] ‘Don’t Be Afraid’ Of Our Video Interviews

Hitting theaters Friday is the Guillermo Del Toro produced remake of Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark, which I personally didn’t care much for but has been receiving strong word of mouth, and of all the millions of Del Toro projects announced in the past couple years, this is one of the few to actually make it all the way to theaters, so hurrah! Check below for our exclusive chats with Del Toro as well as stars Katie Holmes and Bailee Madison. The film opens nationwide on Friday, August 26th.

The pic follows Sally (Bailee Madison), a young girl who moves to Rhode Island to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Katie Holmes) in the 19th-century mansion they are restoring. Having stumbled upon the mansion’s hidden basement, Sally starts hearing voices calling out from the bolted ash pit, imploring her to open it. Sally obliges and unwittingly unleashes something so terrible, so unthinkable, that everyone’s life – hers most of all – is placed in immediate and grave danger.

[Set Visit] Selene Comes Full Circle in ‘Underworld: Awakening 3D’!

Scheduled for release on January 20th, Underworld: Awakening is the upcoming fourth entry in the successful action/horror franchise that has so far grossed nearly $300 million worldwide. Shot in 3D and boasting the return of Kate Beckinsale to the role of Selene, the film is being directed by Swedish duo Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, representing their first outing at the helm of the series.

Back in May I visited the Vancouver set of the film to get a look at some of the action and interview cast and crew including Beckinsale, Marlind & Stein, new cast member Michael Ealy, and visual effects supervisor James McQuaide. In the process I was given a look into the relatively fraught production, which began principal photography without a finished script and was allegedly operating on a rather tight shooting schedule.

Also in the mix will be a discussion of this installment’s new features, including a twelve-foot-tall “uber-lycan”, a half-vampire/half-werewolf girl named Eve, the addition of a “Big Brother”-esque biotech company called Antigen, and perhaps a more ferocious Selene than you’ve ever witnessed before.

Behind-the-Scenes of ‘Bereavement’ Slaughter House

There’s nothing worse than when a parent loses a child to kidnapping. But what if the kidnapper wants to be their new parent, and teach them everything they know about…murder? On August 30th, Anchor Bay Entertainment presents Stevan Mena’s Bereavement on Blu-ray and DVD.

Below you’ll find a new exclusive behind-the-scenes clip featuring interviews with the cast and crew from the film;s slaughter house.

The highly-anticipated prequel to the 2005 cult hit Malevolence, Bereavement stars Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, The Divide), John Savage (The Deer Hunter, The Godfather Part III, Hair, The Thin Red Line, Do The Right Thing), Alexandra Daddario and Brett Rickaby (The Crazies).

In 1989, six-year-old Martin Bristol (Spencer List) was kidnapped from his backyard swing in Minersville, PA. Graham Sutter (Rickaby), a psychotic recluse, kept Martin imprisoned on his derelict pig farm, forcing him to witness and participate in unspeakable horrors. Chosen at random, his victim’s screams were drowned out by the rural countryside.

Martin’s whereabouts would have remained a mystery, until 17-year-old Allison Miller (Daddario) comes to live with her Uncle Jonathan (Biehn). While exploring her new surroundings, Allison discovers things aren’t quiet at the farmhouse down the road. What started as an innocent exercise in satisfying her curiosity will soon disturb a hornet’s nest of evil and despair. For everyone involved, there can only be two outcomes: bereavement or death!

Bonus features on the Bereavement Blu-ray and DVD include audio commentary by writer/director Mena, a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes, and the theatrical trailer.

Interview: ‘Super 8′ Director J.J. Abrams!

One of the most anticipated films of the summer is writer/director J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 (review), about a small Ohio town in 1979 that suffers a rash of bizarre occurrences following an explosive train crash nearby.

In anticipation of the release of the movie – which was produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and in many ways harkens back to the likes of early Amblin-backed films like E.T. and The Goonies – B-D’s Chris Eggertsen recently had the opportunity to attend a press roundtable with Abrams to get his take on the film, which comes out in theaters everywhere this Friday. Video Interview: ‘Super 8′ Director J.J. Abrams Knows Character Development

This morning Paramount Pictures released a slew of generic interviews for Super 8, but the only one that truly matters is that of director J.J. Abrams. While he does trail off a bit, and waste time plugging the iPhone application, he does tell of some tremendous filmmaking lessons for inspiring filmmakers.

In the three videos he talks about his two ideas – a film about kids making a super 8 movies in ’80s, and the other a creature feature – and how it mixed the two. One was about group of characters he loved without a compelling story, so he meshed them into one idea. He also goes into depth about finding the right kids and making sure their characters were authentic and believable. He also speaks for the first time on Steven Speilberg’s involvement revealing that he was “deeply involved in script, casting and editing [process].

Fans of Spielberg will have their minds blown on June 10 when Super 8 attacks theaters.

Update: we added the following video clip from Empire featuring both Spielberg and Abrams!

The Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan Shares Some Horror Picks in this Exclusive Feature

The Smashing Pumpkins mainman Billy Corgan is one of the most visionary musicians of the past two decades.
Even though he’s not an avowed “horror fanatic” like say our new columnist Philip Anselmo or our buddies in Devildriver, Billy Corgan does know what’s up when it comes to scary flicks. Right now, Corgan’s mired in releasing each track of his latest epic the 44-song Teargarden By Kaleidyscope, which from the first songs that have been released, sounds like some of Corgan’s best fare yet. Teargarden mixes the massive scope of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness with the psychedelic grunge urgency of Gish, and we can’t think of anything more awesome than that.
Billy Corgan shared some flicks that scared him with Bloody Disgusting’s very own Rick Florino. Check them out below!
