R.I.P. Former Iron Maiden Drummer Clive Burr Passes Away At 56

Former Iron Maiden drummer Clive Burr passed away last night peacefully in his sleep at the age of 56. Burr joined Maiden in 1979 and performed on the first three albums Iron Maiden (1980), Killers (1981) and The Number Of The Beast (1982). Burr was later diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which caused him to need a wheelchair and left him in great debt. Iron Maiden staged several charity concerts for Burr.

Steve Harris said “This is terribly sad news. Clive was a very old friend of all of us. He was a wonderful person and an amazing drummer who made a valuable contribution to Maiden in the early days when we were starting out. This is a sad day for everyone in the band and those around him and our thoughts and condolences are with his partner Mimi and family at this time.

Bruce Dickinson adds “I first met Clive when he was leaving Samson and joining Iron Maiden. He was a great guy and a man who really lived his life to the full. Even during the darkest days of his M.S., Clive never lost his sense of humour or irreverence. This is a terribly sad day and all our thoughts are with Mimi and the family

Our deepest condolences to Burr’s family, his friends, the members of Iron Maidens, and all the fans around the world. READ MORE

Iron Maiden Introduces Their Own Beer, ‘Trooper Ale’

Legendary metal band Iron Maiden have teamed up with Cheshire brewers Robinsons to create a new beer entitled “Trooper”, a 4.7% British ale. The beer will be available for purchase by both UK residents and overseas customers in May of this year via the Iron Maiden Beer website.

Oliver Robinson, managing director of Robinsons, said, “This collaboration — between two huge British success stories — makes for an ideal and natural match; Bruce Dickinson loves his real ale, and Robinsons Brewery is one of Britain’s most established and respected independent family-owned brewers.

Dickinson added, “I’m a lifelong fan of traditional English ale; I thought I’d died and gone to heaven when we were asked to create our own beer. I have to say that I was very nervous: Robinsons are the only people I have had to audition for in 30 years. Their magic has been to create the alchemical wedding of flavor and texture that is Trooper. I love it.

A video of singer Bruce Dickinson explaining how Robinsons was chosen as well as him touring the factory can be seen below. READ MORE

Anthrax To Release New EP ‘Anthems’

Thrash metal legends Anthrax will be releasing an 8-track EP entitled Anthems on March 19th in N. America. The EP features six covers from band such as Rush, Cheap Trick, Boston, and more, and two Anthrax tracks. For their cover of Boston’s “Smokin’,” the band brought in keyboardist Fred Mandel, who has recorded with Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, Queen, Elton John, and many more.

Drummer Charlie Benante comments on the Boston cover, saying, “If ever there were a perfect first album, it’s Boston’s first album. The harmony leads they did would later be heard by Iron Maiden, which of course would lead to thrash metal.

Vocalist Joey Belladonna, “These are all bands I grew up with and have listened to forever. It’s just great music. I had fun singing these songs and I was happy recording together with Anthrax, doing classic rock songs. Fun stuff!READ MORE

Let’s Talk The Grammy 2013 Rock Nominations, Shall We?

The official 2013 Grammy nominations list has been released and, as per usual, it takes the opportunity to laud and celebrate what the radios and mass media have been shoving down our throats for the past year (thank god we can use mp3 players and dictate what we want to listen to, right?). Now, I basically just completely ignored the vast majority of categories and immediately scanned down to find the four categories that interested me: Best Rock Performance, Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Album. And what I found was pretty…well, it was pretty confusing. READ MORE

Coheed And Cambria Announce Details For New Album

Coheed And Cambria have announced that their upcoming sixth studio record, The Afterman, will be a double concept album and will be released in two separate volumes. The first volume, The Afterman: Ascension, will be out Oct. 9th. The second volume, The Afterman: Descension, will be released at an undetermined date in February 2013. The band has released an album teaser video, which you can watch below. The teaser looks like a mix between Alien and 2001: A Space Odyssey, so sci-fi fans take heed.

A deluxe version of the ‘The Afterman’ will include a hardcover coffee-table book with expansive art by Heidi Taillefer and Nathan Spoor with collaborative written work from singer/creator Claudio Sanchez and writer Peter David that will create a song by song experience. David previously worked with Sanchez on the prose novel adaptation of the band’s 2010 album “Year of the Black Rainbow,” and the graphic novel adaptation of their 2003 album “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3“.

The Afterman takes place in the running concept story The Amory Wars. Each title from the band falls into this epic sci-fi arc. It was recently announced that Mark Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson of Leverage Productions will be developing the story into a live-action feature film.

Coheed and Cambria are currently touring with Iron Maiden and will be hitting the road for a headline run beginning in mid-September. All tour dates are below. READ MORE

[LOL] Musicians Falling Off The Stage Set To The ‘Benny Hill’ Theme

It’s Thursday and it’s almost the weekend. Perhaps the days are dragging just a little too long for you and you need some inspiration to keep on trucking until the sweet glory of Saturday and Sunday descends upon you. Well, look no further, as Metal Injection has put together a fantastic little video of musicians and their on-stage accidental tumbles. My personal favorite is Iron Maiden‘s Bruce Dickinson who falls rather hard on his tuchus only to jam his legs into the air, spread eagle style.

You can get your laugh on below. But tell me, any of you see anything funny happen to a musician while you were at a concert? Tell me a few stories and I’ll share a few of mine! READ MORE

Iron Maiden Voted Best British Band In Past 60 Years

According to a poll done by HMV, a UK and Ireland based entertainment store, readers have voted Iron Maiden‘s 1982 album The Number Of The Beast as the best British album of the past 60 years. Coming in with a pretty strong second place was Depeche Mode‘s Violator (hell yes!) while The Beatle’s had four entries in the Top 10. The poll garnered approximately 30,000 votes for the Top 60 albums of the past 60 years.

The Top 10:
01. Iron Maiden – The Number Of The Beast
02. Depeche Mode – Violator
03. The Beatles – Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
04. The Beatles – Abbey Road
05. Pink Floyd – The Dark Side Of The Moon
06. The Beatles – Revolver
07. Queen – A Night At The Opera
08. Oasis – (What’s The Story) Morning Glory?
09. Adele – 21
10. The Beatles – White Album

This is fascinating to me as, in the past, more popular/mainstream artists would have almost certainly dominated the charts. Now, with the advantage of social media, the full scope of music can be appreciated and lauded.

You can see the full list of the top 60 albums here. READ MORE

Iron Maiden Announce ‘En Vivo!’

 Iron Maiden Announce En Vivo!

Legendary metal band Iron Maiden has announced a new live DVD entitled En Vivo! Filmed during the Round The World In 66 Days leg of The Final Frontier Tour in Santiago, Chile to over 50,000 fans, the set list includes 17 tracks culled from a history of classic Maiden music. Filmed using 22 HD cameras and an octocam (a flying camera used to capture audience shots), this two disc DVD set looks like a must-have for Maiden fans.
Bassist Steve Harris: “For The Final Frontier Tour, it was really important to me that we filmed in South America as we’re always so overwhelmed by the fans’ reaction when we go to that part of the world and I wanted to reflect that in the filming. After much consideration, we chose the Santiago show as we felt it was one of our best performances of the entire tour and to play at the prestigious Estadio Nacional was a landmark moment for us. For reasons known to our fans,  it took a long time before we got to play our first show in Chile, and once we did get to play a show, the response was so phenomenal we just had to keep coming back, and it’s got better and better each time!”
Check out a trailer below as well as the tracklist. Up the irons!
