Endangered

In the action thriller Endangered, a deputy whose mission is protecting the threatened grizzly bear suddenly finds himself conflicted when a massive rogue grizzly wreaks havoc on a local Alaskan community. Enlisting the help of his estranged brother, he enters the labyrinthian Grizzly Maze to track down his wife who’s gone missing before the bear does. As the body count mounts, and an infamous bear hunter enters the fray determined to take down the bear he’s been waiting for his whole life, no one is safe in the harsh Alaskan wilds.

The Loft (remake)

In a very Hitchcockian plot, the pic follows five married friends who share a loft where each of them bring their mistresses. When the body of an unknown woman is found in the loft, they begin to suspect one another of murder.

Thomas Jane To Direct And Star In ‘Wet House’!

I’m eagerly awaiting Red Machine, a grizzly bear movie directed by Saw V‘s David Hackl and starring James Marsden, Billy Bob Thornton, Thomas Jane, Piper Perabo, Scott Glenn, Adam Beach, Michaela McManus and Kelly Curran. But in the meantime we can exclusively report that its screenwriter Jack Reher is reteaming with its star Thomas Jane for the upcoming Wet House, a horror film that Jane will direct as well as star in.

Reher explains what a “Wet House” is, “These places are popping up all over the United States. Kind of creepy. People go there by their own admission when they give up on life and their addictions. By means of drinking or drugs, late-stage users go to a Wet House when all hope is lost. Then they die…” Having known a few addicts and alcoholics, this seems pretty disturbing.

The film is “an elevated genre supernatural thriller and is loosely based on Charles Dickens’ classic ghost story “The Signal-Man.” A doctor treats a patient that checks in there after a horrific car accident and meets another resident that predicts tragic things that haven’t happened yet.. Slowly the doctor loses grip on his sanity in the Wet House and becomes haunted by something sinister.

Tonally the film will resemble a mixture of Jacob’s Ladder, Poltergeist, and Secret Window. As far as Red Machine goes, we’re hearing it’s going to be hitting sometime this summer.

Billy Bob Thornton Details Grizzly Bear Horror ‘Red Machine’

Star Billy Bob Thornton hit his official blog to share his own personal description of Red Machine, a grizzly bear movie directed by Saw V‘s David Hackl, and co-starring James Marsden, Thomas Jane, Piper Perabo, Scott Glenn, Adam Beach, Michaela McManus and Kelly Curran.

James Marsden (X-Men, Enchanted) and Thomas Jane (“Hung”, yes, and so good in The Mist) are a pair of estranged brothers who enter the wilderness. Marsden, fresh out of jail, is the ne’er-do-well who has come home to settle somed unfinished business. Jane is the town sheriff who helps his fiancée track the local fauna. Their outing in the great white north takes off, but goes horribly south when they are attacked, then relentlessly pursued by a monstrous and seriously territorial grizzly bear. This is clearly not Yogi Bear or Gentle Ben territory because this particular specimen of Ursus arctos horribilis goes by the nickname Red Machine.

Billy Bob plays Douglass, an Alaskan bear tracker whom James Marsden describes as much like Robert Shaw’s Quint character in Jaws. Douglass ain’t quite right in the head, but he knows that bears do more than you-know-what in the woods. The cast includes Adam Beach (Cowboys and Aliens), Scott Glenn (“You spook easily, Starling?”), Kelly Curran (“How I Met Your Mother”), and Michaela McManus (“The Vampire Diaries”). Piper Perabo (The Prestige) plays Thomas Jane’s fiancée, a wilderness-savvy photographer whose ability to survive the escalating danger may be hampered by the fact that she is deaf.

The funniest portion is when he explains his role:”Ride a horse, hunt a bear, mysterious appear and disappear in the woods.Red Machine is now in post. READ MORE

Tom Jane, James Marsden And Billy Bob Thornton Fight ‘Red Machine’!

RedMachine11912 Tom Jane, James Marsden And Billy Bob Thornton Fight Red Machine!

Back in October of 2010 we reported that Saw V director David Hackl had been lined up to direct Jack Reher’s spec script Red Machine.

We’re now finally hearing some more concrete news on the project. Per Variety, “Fully financed pic centers around two estranged brothers (Marsden, Jane) who reconcile on a camping trip with their girlfriends. Once in the remote wilderness, however, things go horribly awry when they are attacked and relentlessly stalked by a horrifying grizzly bear — the Red Machine. Thornton will play a legendary bear expert and hunter.

While I haven’t seen Saw V, and I’m not really the biggest fan of that franchise’s aesthetic, this movie sounds like it could actually be ridiculously fun! I’m kind of excited!

Below the jump I’ve included the original 2010 sales art so you can behold its awesome tagline. Sadly, I believe Bart the Bear is unavailable. READ MORE

[Interview] ‘Straw Dogs’ Director Rod Lurie

Director Rod Lurie (The Contender, Nothing But The Truth) has had a long three years of dodging and absorbing criticism ever since it was announced that he would be taking the reigns on a remake of Sam Peckinpah’s 1971 classic, Straw Dogs. Loosely basing his film on the book “The Siege At Trencher’s Farm” by Gordon Williams, Peckinpah fashioned a unique statement about the politics of masculinity in his story about American mathematician David Sumner (Dustin Hoffman) and his wife Amy (Susan George) who visit her hometown in England only to find fissures in their marital dynamic. The cracks in their relationship are tested by the differing cultural environment and the local populace (including Amy’s ex-boyfriend Charlie) and by the end of the film, well… things get a little out of hand.

When the wildly controversial original film was released in 1971 it was met with public outcry, forced edits by the US studio, and an `X’ rating in the United Kingdom (in fact, 13 years after the film’s release in the UK the uncut version was banned, which remained in effect until 2002). Many critics felt the film’s exploration of violence and was both fascist and misogynistic. Whatever Peckinpah’s true moral and sociological intentions may have been, the film is a masterpiece.

All of this obviously adds to the stakes of tackling a remake. Taking on one of the hallmark films of a legendary director, a film that touches on issues that are very much still culturally sensitive, well it’s certainly a risk.

I had the chance to touch base with Rod Lurie this week to discuss his version of Straw Dogs which stars James Marsden and Kate Bosworth as David and Amy Sumner as well as Alexander Skarsgard as Amy’s ex-boyfriend Charlie. Rounding out the cast are James Woods, Rhys Coiro, Walton Goggins, Willa Holland and Dominic Purcell.

Latest 1971 Homage in New ‘Straw Dogs’ One Sheet

Sony Screen Gems has released another official one sheet and a trio of character posters for Straw Dogs, Rod Lurie’s remake of Sam Peckinpah’s 1971 classic arriving in theaters September 16. After the boxoffice bomb of Fright Night 3D, you have to think Sony is a bit concerned right about now…

Anyways, the official poster is a modern version of the 1971 version, but depicts the film’s antagonist, Charlie, as played by “True Blood” fav Alexander Skarsgård. It’s a nice piece of imagery that will catch anyones eye as they walk by in a theater. On the other hand, the character posters are tedious, spewing quotes from the movie by the character portrayed. A big finger down the throat.

Revised ‘Straw Dogs’ Poster Has More of an Eye For Original

Last month director Rod Lurie took to Twitter to share the official poster for his remake of Straw Dogs, which stars James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, Alexander Skarsgard, James Woods, Dominic Purcell and Willa Holland. What he put on display was very telling as it was his way of implying that the redo is faithful to the classic. Now, a second version has been released that’s tweaked more in the favor of the original by adding a sorta creepy look at James Marden’s right eye.

Based on the previously released trailer (found at the bottom of the this news story), Screen Gems’ flick arriving in theaters September 16 looks tonally similar to I Spit On Your Grave and Last House on the Left. That’s definitely a good thing.
