You guys know I’m a huge Friday The 13th fan. If I wasn’t, I wouldn’t be spending all night tonight hosting a screening of the first four films (tickets here if you’re in LA)! You’ve also probably read my personal F13 Rankings! But now it’s your turn! After all, Friday The 13th is practically a Horror Holiday and it belongs to everyone! Hell they’re all out on Blu-ray for the very first time too with “Friday the 13th: The Complete Collection” (at least it’s the first time for most of them).
Do you like the simplicity and innocence of Friday The 13th? The pastoral beauty of Part 2? Jason finding his mask in Part 3? The Jarvis family, Crispin Glover and overall technical competence of The Final Chapter? How about the sleazy fun of A New Beginning or the legit narrative of Jason Lives? Maybe for some reason you dig The New Blood (it does have the best Zombie Jason design) or are homesick for the dangerous Manhattan of the late 80′s. Maybe you’re a really big “Silver Spoons” fan and watch Jason Goes To Hell every d*amn night. You could also be one of the folks who revel in the twisted futurism of Jason X or dig the NOES structure of Freddy Vs. Jason. You could also be one of the smart folks like me who realize that Friday The 13th (2009) is pretty damn good!
Whatever the case, vote below! And tell us why in the comments! READ MORE
Continuity has never been a huge concern in the Friday The 13th franchise, but I don’t hold that up as necessarily being a bad thing. If these films were concerned with logic, they’d be way less fun – so I’m happy they celebrate inconsistency from the ground up!
While many F13 films do attempt to bridge with the past in regard to Jason’s mask (that cleaver mark in the forehead being the most prevalent), others completely disregard what came before. Sometimes his mask is clean, sometimes dirty. Sometimes it’s an entirely different design! And then you have Jason Goes To Hell, what the hell is going on there?! Is his face growing around the mask?
Check out the in-sequence collection below – and see if YOU can spot all the minor differences!!! READ MORE
Matt Serafini over at Dread Central has done some ace detective work in regard to a potential Friday The 13th Blu-ray Box-set.
It all went down at the WB Shop Facebook Page and started back in February when the admin there noted, “there should be some news for Jason fans later in the year.” Then, on Tuesday, another fan followed up saying they wanted “Friday The 13th 1-8 On Blu Ray” for Christmas. The shop’s official reply? “You might get that and more if Santa is good to ya.”
It’s worth noting that now WB owns the home video rights for all 12 Jason films. It’s not the worst conclusion to jump to. If you can tell me off the top of your head which movie the pic of Jason above is from, you’re gonna want this in your life. READ MORE
Oddly enough my first experiences with sequels were all pretty positive. The first ones that really come to mind are Aliens (which I didn’t even know was a sequel when I saw it) and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, both James Cameron slam dunks. Even if T2 doesn’t hold up as well as Aliens, it was still tailor made for whatever version of me it was that saw it 5 times in the summer of 1991. These movies, along with Gremlins 2, may be why I don’t necessarily feel the same instant negativity towards sequelization that most people do.
But when I think about it, there are still a few bruises. Elm Street was one of my favorite franchises as a kid but since I was too young to see these things in the theater I had to just sort of catch up with them on VHS on those weekends when things like money and lack of parental supervision really came together. I was lucky enough to skip Freddy’s Revenge (even though I still don’t think it’s all that bad) and head straight to the near factually awesome Dream Warriors. The it was onto The Dream Master, which was riding a real cultural wave – for those of you who don’t remember Freddy Krueger had a truly mainstream moment in 1988 – that I was easily swept up in. It’s almost like I forgave the film for being a step down because I felt like I was part of some larger conversation. READ MORE
Let’s face it, the Friday The 13th franchise isn’t exactly known for great writing, outstanding performances, thematic heft, arcs, or anything that would remotely constitute an olive branch to the non-horror fan. But that doesn’t mean the moves are without merit! I’m a nut for the franchise (which you can probably tell by my ranking of the franchise) and, even aside from the kills, there’s plenty to like!
Just because the series isn’t known for its great characters doesn’t mean that there’s not a handful of characters and performances that rise above the rest.
