Travel Foreman To Leave Animal Man

It’s no secret that Travel Foreman has played a big role in the success of DC’s newest version of Animal Man. It has been officially announced that Foreman will be leaving the series, to be replaced by Steve Pugh starting at issue #9. Given that it was announced that Foreman will be heading to Birds of Prey, this isn’t much of a shock. How will the affect the series? Will it still be the same beautifully haunting family story? Only time will tell, but it’s nice to see Pugh return to the series after 20 years. Read on for the skinny…

Preview: Frankenstein Agent Of SHADE #6

Sure, Jeff Lemire may be leaving the series soon, but we can still give Frankie and the gang some love! These next few issues look to build on Frank’s character and explore his past as one of the most deadly monsters of all time. Though they may feel like filler issues until Matt Kindt jumps on board in a few months, they are guaranteed fun. Check out the preview below for issue #6, which is in stores today. Surprise, Animal Man Annual!

What’s that you say, more Animal Man? You ask for it, you got it! DC announced, oh so sneakily, that a stand alone, oversized, A-Man Annual will be hitting shops (or Ipads) in May. The story will go even deeper into the forces of The Red, The Green and The Rot. Lemire details that this Annual issue is in many ways a prequel to the highly anticipated Swamp Thing with fellow scribe, Scott Snyder. Travel Foreman’s cover (below) is godlike. I think I just filled the cup

10 Comics To Feast On: February 8th

With all the focus on those Before Watchmen books, it’s kind of hard to think of anything else, regardless of how you feel about the prequels. But lets not forget we’ve got a few good months ahead of us before we need to even consider those titles. Let’s focus on what’s here right now: BUFFY continues one of her weirdest seasons yet, the third issue of Lapham’s del Toro adaptation THE STRAIN, Kirkman’s newest title THIEF OF THEIVES, and a bunch more. OMFG: Jeff Lemire To Take Over On ‘Justice League Dark’

DC announced today that Eisner-winning Jeff Lemire will be taking over for Peter Milligan on Justice League Dark starting at issue #9. I know professional journalism is supposed to be unbiased, but we all know it isn’t, and I cannot contain my excitement for this news. I could not think of anyone I would rather crafting this title. Jeff Lemire has been absolutely killing every book he lays his pen to, and now he gets a chance to rework some more major Vertigo icons. Lemire has said that this is his “dream gig at DC”, and given his passion for JLD characters, I have no doubt this will become an even more incredible series. Following his thriving success on Animal Man, Lemire now hopes to do the same with the gang of misfit heroes. Check below for the release details.

UPDATE: It was announced that Peter Milligan will be writing Stormwatch also starting at issue #9, after his leave on JL Dark.

UPDATE 2: Jeff Lemire Will be leaving his post on Franeknstein, and will be replaced by Matt Kindt, another very talented writer.

Preview: Frankenstein Battles Some Sea Monsters In Issue #4

Lemire is becoming somewhat of a household name amongst comic fans, and though most of the praise is being showered upon his insanely good Animal Man series, his work on Frankenstein ain’t half bad either. In fact, it’s one of the most adventure-filled books of the New 52, and it reeks of Morrison’s early work. Peep the 4-page preview right here! Read on for the skinny…

With the ever-increasing number of books coming out between the tie-ins, the crossovers, and the new series, we’ve got to limit our list of comics for the week somehow. GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Animal Man’ #2

Last month’s ish of Animal Man was probably the biggest shock of the DC relaunch, and hands down, one of the best new books. Lemire’s talent shines through once again to bring us an exceedingly disturbing tale about Buddy Baker’s life as a superhero that people don’t seem to take seriously. Now that his family is involved in the mess of things, it seems he will have no choice but to revert back to his A-Man uni and give in to the mysterious force known as “The Red”. The first issue was a wonderful introduction to the character, horrifying, and had one of the best cliffhanger endings of the year. Foreman’s distinctive art style only adds to the genius and terror of the book. Lemire and Foreman’s modernized vision of Animal Man is everything we need in contemporary comics. ‘Flashpoint’ Draws To A Close This Wednesday, And We Have Your ‘Frankenstein’ Preview!

As publisher DC Comics gets geared up to (re)launch their all new 52 next month, one could say that the publisher has their hands more than full as they make the mad dash to try and tie-up all the loose ends that come along with such a heavy-handed manuever. A perfect example of this is the extremely popular “FLASHPOINT” event, and beyond the break you can check out a 3 page preview of one of the stories’ many titles that will be ending this month with “FRANKENSTEIN AND THE CREATURES OF THE UNKNOWN” issue #3. GRAPHIC COLUMNS: Analyzing The DC Reboot – Lonmonster

Screw character rebirths, let’s reboot the entire universe! No characters are safe, no series will continue, run for the hills, this is an all out massacre of the entire DC catalog! As I’m sure you know, DC Comics has recently announced that, after the summer, all of their series will come to a close of some sort or another. DC plans to relaunch 52 brand spankin’ new books from issue #1, offering a crap-load of fresh story lines, new origins for some, and hundreds of modern costumes. Though our beloved heroes and events will lose much of their historic values, this DCU reboot probably isn’t a bad thing at all.

GRAPHIC CONTENT: PICK OF THE WEEK – ‘Sweet Tooth’ Issue #21

It may be my bias toward pretty much anything Vertigo puts out combined with my love for a fellow Canadian, Jeff Lemire, but I am obsessed with Sweet Tooth. For those who have not been following this gem of a book, quite simply, you should be. This series is consistently beautiful month after month, and I can hardly wait to see what little antler boy is getting up to. Read on for the skinny…

Read The Entire First Issue Of Jeff Lemire’s ‘Sweet Tooth’ Now!

Out of all of the series’ running right now, and God knows there are thousands, Jeff Lemire’s (“ESSEX COUNTY”, “THE NOBODY”) dark, post pandemic fairy tale “SWEET TOOTH” is in this writers humble opinion ranked in the top 10 best. Lemire’s avant-guard style of story telling and his off the wall ideas make his work some of the most complex in comics, and “SWEET TOOTH” is widely regarded as one of the best pieces of illustrated fiction in circulation. The story itself is something between a Cormac McCarthy novel and a Coen Brothers film with enough violence, drama, and tragedy to keep almost any reader entertained. Written and illustrated by Lemire, the story is being pegged as a runaway favorite for the Eisner Awards. So to celebrate the upcoming release of the trade paperback that will collect the series’ first 6 issues (May 18th) readers are being treated to a digital copy of the first issue thanks to Vertigo Comics. To read the issue make the jump.

Review: Jeff Lemire’s Sweet Tooth Is Not To Be Overlooked

Often times it is easy to overlook things that might seem small or even miniscule when compared to the things around them. It is too true that in many cases these seemingly small, inferior things possess far more potential than their peers. This is the case for many aspects of our lives. Literature is a prime example. With so many stories glutting store shelves, with everybody and their mother writing a story (and even the dog & cat seem to get in on the action these days), and publishers clamoring to find the next “TWILIGHT” or “HARRY POTTER”, the ultimate loser just could wind up being the consumers themselves. After all, quantity isn’t quality and no matter how deep you look you might not ever find that needle in the haystack. That is unless or until it drives itself into your finger and makes you notice.
