Paramount Dates ‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’ For Home Video

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced DVD, Blu-ray/DVD Combo, and 3D Blu-ray releases of Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (review) for June 11, reports DVD Active. No extra material will be included on the DVD release. The Blu-ray releases will include 3 featurettes (“Reinventing Hansel & Gretel”, “The Witching Hours”, “Meet Edward the Troll”), and a digital copy of the film.

The sly and ingeniously wicked movie tells the story of the brother and sister team seeking to avenge their parents’ deaths. But after a lifetime of hunting witches, Hansel and Gretel now must face an evil greater than anything they’ve seen: a terrifying new threat so massive, it could destroy the world as we know it.

[BD Review] Johnny Would Ride Into Another ‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’

Now in theaters everywhere is Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola’s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, which stars Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen, Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Thomas Mann, Derek Mears and Peter Stormare. In the film, after getting a taste for blood as children, Hansel (Renner) and Gretel (Arterton) have become the ultimate vigilantes, hell bent on retribution. Now, unbeknownst to them, Hansel and Gretel have become the hunted, and must face an evil far greater than witches…their past.

Not screened for critics, Jonny attended the midnight screening of the fun 3-D re-imagining of the classic fairy tale. As the film progressed, he loved it more and more:

At the start of the movie, I was expecting a waste of my time. By the middle, I found myself with a grin on my face. By the end, I was hoping that there would be a sequel. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters isn’t a movie meant to scare or make you think but it is one of the most entertaining and enjoyable movies of its kind that I’ve seen in years.” Check out the review in its entirety here.

[BD Review] Jonny Gives ‘Hansel And Gretel’ A Spin And Likes What He Sees

Walking into Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, I can honestly say my expectations were lower than the Marina Trench. After all, it looked like another Van Helsing, which I fell asleep during watching in the theater. Imagine my surprise when I not only managed to stay awake throughout the film but I also had a pretty damn good time during it as well!

The basic plot of the film is that a grown up Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arteron) are a pair of witch hunters who travel the land taking jobs fighting and killing witches and other supernatural baddies. They arrive in a town where several children have been kidnapped and since all signs point to the culprits being witches the dynamic duo are hired.

What follows is a very straightforward story, one that doesn’t require any strenuous thought at all. In fact, you can probably shut off the vast majority of your brain, sit back, and just enjoy the ride because the story is really that simple. The dialogue is incredibly basic with almost no supernatural jargon (does anyone else think it ridiculous when characters speak in “fake” languages?), and yet there are some genuinely laugh-worthy moments.

Aside from a few jarring cuts to new scenes, the only real negative thing I have to say about this movie is that there is a rather glaring plot hole (SPOILER ALERT) in that they don’t realize that this job is in their hometown. They get quite surprised when they stumble across their old home and yet nothing in the beginning of the film (which shows the Hansel and Gretel/Gingerbread house story) indicates that there was any memory loss whatsoever. It’s rather odd and had me scratching my head a bit.

However, the movie offers a lot of positive qualities as well. The use of practical FX is fantastic, including a great deal of gore, some really nice witch makeup, and pretty awesome looking troll named Edward (Derek Mears). The set design is also well done although admittedly just over the top, giving everything a fairytale quality (which is rather appropriate). There is limited but necessary CGI when it comes to the set design, usually reserved for vistas and extreme wide shots.

The action sequences, of which there are many, are crisp, fun, and feel exciting and also allow for a good bit of physical comedy.

With movies like this, it’s interesting trying to decipher if they are horror or not. There isn’t a single scare in this film or even a moment where I felt any sense of suspense or impending fear. However, the visuals and atmosphere practically ooze everything a horror fan could want.

At the start of the movie, I was expecting a waste of my time. By the middle, I found myself with a grin on my face. By the end, I was hoping that there would be a sequel. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters isn’t a movie meant to scare or make you think but it is one of the most entertaining and enjoyable movies of its kind that I’ve seen in years.

‘Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters’ Bumped For IMAX Presentation

Paramount Pictures will move Dead Snow director Tommy Wirkola’s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters to January 25, 2013 in order to get the film on IMAX screens.

[News Bites] Bond Girl Joins ‘World’s End’, ‘Dead of Winter’ Confirmed, ‘Hansel & Gretel’ Rated-”R”, And ‘Milo’ Goes ‘Project X’!

Musicvideo and commercials helmer Anthony Mandler is attached to direct Lionsgate’s Dead of Winter, a Black List thriller written by tyro scribe Sarah Conradt that has Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) attached to star, reports Variety from a scoop right here on Bloody Disgusting back in February. “Steinfeld is slated to play a teen who heads to a remote cabin in the mountains with her father and new stepmother — an experience he hopes will bring the two ladies closer together. When a dangerous fugitive posing as a park ranger shows up, the trio must put aside the family bonding to fight for survival.” Producers are aiming for an early 2013 start date.

The Daily Mail is reporting that Rosamund Pike (Doom, Wrath of the Titans, Die Another Day) has joined The World’s End alongside Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Edgar Wright directs the pic that starts 20 years after five childhood friends attempted an epic pub crawl. The friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. It leads into a horrific adventure.

Jonathan Daniel Brown, one of the breakout stars of Project X, is joining the cast of the New Artists Alliance’s horror comedy Milo, says THR. Ken Marino, Gillian Jacobs and Peter Stormare make up the cast of the pic, which “Centers on a man (Marino) with intense stomach trouble who learns to his horror that he has a demon living in his intestines. When he gives it permission to come out during a therapy session, the man names it Milo and tries to live a life in which he, not his demon, is in charge.” Brown will play an intern who works for Marino. Jacob Vaughan is making his directorial debut on the pic, which the Duplass brothers are exec producing.

Collider has some of the most pointless news of the week as they confirmed with Paramount that their long-delayed Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 3D, in theaters January 11, 2013, will in fact be rated “R”. The original take on the classic fairytale, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, is set 15 years after the siblings killed the witch who kidnapped them. Hansel and Gretel have now evolved into bounty hunters who pursue witches.

Bait 3D now has a Dutch poster. It will arrive September 18 on DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack from Anchor Bay. “This 3D thriller tells the story of a group of survivors in a sleepy beach town who suddenly find themselves trapped inside a submerged supermarket, following a freak tsunami.” Xavier Samuel, Sharni Vinson (You’re Next), Alex Russell (Chronicle), and Julian McMahon star.

Yup, Jeremy Renner Could Be the New Snake Plissken!

Some news we’ve been hearing but couldn’t firm up until just now is that Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) is in close talks to land the lead role of Snake Plissken in Escape from New York, the Breck Eisner-directed remake of John Carpenter’s classic 1981 post-apocalyptic thriller that followed antihero Snake Plissken (played by Kurt Russell) as he tries to save the President in gang-ruled Manhattan.
