[BD Original] ‘Pet Sock’ Takes ‘Cloverfield’ Into Darkness

With Star Trek: Into Darkness about to hit theaters in a few weeks (May 17), and recent talk about whether or not Cloverfield 2 will ever happen (it’s dead in the water unless JJ Abrams is inspired by Pacific Rim?), “Pet Sock” decided to imagine what it would be like if two of Abrams’ monsters met in battle. [TV] J.J. Abrams To Head Back In Time To “11/22/63″

Well, he won’t direct it, that much is almost certain given his current slate – but J.J. Abrams‘ Bad Robot shingle is currently negotiating for the rights to the Stephen King book “11/22/63″. The development of the project will happen through Warner Bros. TV, where Bad Robot has a deal.

Per Deadline, “ the plan is to adapt the book as a TV series or mini-series, likely for cable.

The book, “centers on Jake, an unassuming divorced English teacher who stumbles upon a time portal that leads to 9/9/1958 and goes on a quest to try and prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy which occurred on 11/22/1963.

Are you more stoked for this or “Under The Dome”?

[Prediction] ‘Cloverfield 2′ Will NEVER Happen!!

I could be wrong about this (even though I believe the chance to be small), so let’s set up the terms of my potential punishment right away. If Cloverfield 2 ever happens, I will buy the first person to call me out on it a 6-pack of that Slusho stuff, should it actually exist.

Here’s the thing, JJ Abrams has moved on. He’s got Star Trek and effing Star Wars to deal with. Matt Reeves and Drew Goddard continue to find new and interesting projects, ones that expand their body of work, not replictae their past. Some people are clinging to hope in the form of this Abrams quote (via Playboy), “Part of me just wants to let [Cloverfield 2] go, though we’ve had a couple of discussions about cool ways to do it. I’m looking forward to seeing Pacific Rim this summer. It feels like there are some really big monsters coming down the pike that could inspire something we do.

The key here is the first sentence. “Part of me just wants to let it go.” The rest is just polite noise. Cloverfield was the perfect project for these filmmakers at that time. It was new, original and innovative. It was a great one-off that didn’t have a lot of mythology to expand upon. 5, 6, and eventually 10 years later it’s just not necessary. There’s always the chance they could just farm out a sequel to a newer batch of filmmakers, but I get the feeling that they’re not even that interested in shepherding it. Nor should we expect them to be. READ MORE

From J.J. Abrams, NBC’s “Revolution,” which premieres September 17 at 10 pm, stars Tracy Spiridakos, Billy Burke, Graham Rogers, JD Pardo and Zak Orth. Hulu is offering the entire pilot presentation a full 2-weeks before it’s television premiere! Our entire way of life depends on electricity. So what would happen if it just stopped working? Well, one day, like a switch turned off, the world is suddenly thrust back into the dark ages. Planes fall from the sky, hospitals shut down, and communication is impossible. And without any modern technology, who can tell us why? Now, 15 years later, life is back to what it once was long before the industrial revolution: families living in quiet cul-de-sacs, and when the sun goes down lanterns and candles are lit. Life is slower and sweeter. Or is it? On the fringes of small farming communities, danger lurks. And a young woman’s life is dramatically changed when a local militia arrives and kills her father, who mysteriously – and unbeknownst to her – had something to do with the blackout. The Tale Of Two Unused ‘Super 8′ Posters

Right before Super 8 hit theatres, a Drew Struzan-like poster for the film hit the web. It turned out to be fan-made, but it managed to capture Super 8‘s nostalgic whimsy pretty nicely and got a lot of attention.

When it was discovered that it was fake, I think a lot of people – myself included – wondered why the studio hadn’t made classic poster art for the Amblin flick and now we have an answer: they did.

According to Daniel Skubal, him and his girlfriend, Veronica LaPage, were asked by Bad Robot to come up with a poster design for the film, which sadly did not end up getting used – there doesn’t seem to be any sour grapes between the artists and the studio, though. You can read the full story here and check out the art after the break. While I like the two concept posters, I actually prefer the fan-made one (I mean, I guess these are technically fan-made, too). They’re very well done, but don’t capture the essence of the film and just seem like fully colored storyboards. That’s not the artists’ fault, though; they hadn’t seen the movie before they were asked to create them.

Interview: ‘Super 8′ Director J.J. Abrams!

One of the most anticipated films of the summer is writer/director J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 (review), about a small Ohio town in 1979 that suffers a rash of bizarre occurrences following an explosive train crash nearby.

In anticipation of the release of the movie – which was produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and in many ways harkens back to the likes of early Amblin-backed films like E.T. and The Goonies – B-D’s Chris Eggertsen recently had the opportunity to attend a press roundtable with Abrams to get his take on the film, which comes out in theaters everywhere this Friday. Newest ‘Super 8′ Poster Art is the Best Yet

JJ Abrams’ Super 8 is only days away from starting its theatrical run, and the reviews have been nothing short of phenomenal so far. There’s really nothing like seeing that Amblin logo float across the screen and then have the film make good on it. It has a great Goonies-like group of rambunctious adolscents thrust into this situation they can’t control as it completely reshapes their personalities and becomes the defining moment in their formative years. Like I said, it does the Amblin name proud.

A new poster hit the web today, courtesy of Cine1, featuring a montage with most of the central characters and several pivotal moments. Check out the poster art after the break, which is a breath of fresh air in an age full of crappy photoshopped ads.

Yes, MORE Train Wreck Footage in Six Minute ‘Super 8′ Clip

I can’t help but laugh just a little bit. This morning we brought you two very fresh clips from J.J. Abrams’ Super 8 (review) — and when I say “fresh” I am referring to the fact that they weren’t from the train crash sequence. In an unsurprising twist on the day, Paramount has released yet another stock of footage that blends the handful of previously displayed “train wreck” scenes (including the one that was a blend of three previous clips, ha!). If my count is right, this is the sixth clip? Anyways, you can watch six whole minutes inside, which does carry a few fresh snippets here and there.

BD Review: The Return of Authentic Spielberg in ‘Super 8′!

Whether it’s a reflection of my age or just the quality of films today, I rarely watch a (modern) movie more than once. That’s the strength of J.J. Video Interview: ‘Super 8′ Director J.J. Abrams Knows Character Development

This morning Paramount Pictures released a slew of generic interviews for Super 8, but the only one that truly matters is that of director J.J. Abrams. While he does trail off a bit, and waste time plugging the iPhone application, he does tell of some tremendous filmmaking lessons for inspiring filmmakers.

In the three videos he talks about his two ideas – a film about kids making a super 8 movies in ’80s, and the other a creature feature – and how it mixed the two. One was about group of characters he loved without a compelling story, so he meshed them into one idea. He also goes into depth about finding the right kids and making sure their characters were authentic and believable. He also speaks for the first time on Steven Speilberg’s involvement revealing that he was “deeply involved in script, casting and editing [process].

Fans of Spielberg will have their minds blown on June 10 when Super 8 attacks theaters.

Update: we added the following video clip from Empire featuring both Spielberg and Abrams!
