The Tall Man

In an isolated, slowly dying mining town, children are vanishing without a trace – abducted, the townsfolk whisper, by a mysterious entity known locally as “The Tall Man.” Town nurse Julia Denning (Jessica Biel) seems skeptical…until her young David disappears in the middle of night. Frantic to rescue the boy, Julia lives every parent’s darkest nightmare in this twisting, shock-around-each-corner thriller.

ParaNorman

In the comedy thriller, a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Mr. McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.

[BD Review] While 'ParaNorman' Is Visually Revolutionary, It Lacks In Story...

In theaters August 17, I caught an early screening of Focus Features’ ParaNorman, the latest 3-D animated genre pic from the team behind Coraline. Carousing the Web it appears people are really digging this flick, only I wasn’t as entertained. The stop-motion flick looks absolutely astounding, but the story lacks depth, creativity and laughs.

[It's a] remarkable piece of art that, utilizing state of the art 3-D, take stop-motion animation to an entirely new level. The eye candy that LAIKA has delivered is revolutionary and so advanced that it makes Sony’s classic Monster House look like absolute crap.

[And while] the animation itself is stunning, what lacks is the screenplay. Butler penned the story that is gummed down with incredibly bad jokes, obnoxious characters, and a bland moral that’s worked around the classic “Frankenstein” tale.

You can read the review in its entirety by clicking here. We’d love to know your thoughts, so write your own reviews when it hits theaters on August 17.

While I wasn’t a huge fan of Coraline I was mind-blown by the animation and 3-D. If this actually tips its hat to the horror genre, and is more engaging for adults, I expect something quite special on August 17.

The voice cast includes Academy Award nominee Casey Affleck (The Killer Inside Me ), Tempestt Bledsoe (“The Cosby Show”), Jeff Garlin (Toy Story 3), John Goodman (Red State, Matinee, Monsters, Inc.), Bernard Hill (Titanic), Academy Award nominee Anna Kendrick (Up in the Air), Leslie Mann (Rio), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Fright Night 3D, How to Train Your Dragon), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In) and Tony and Emmy Award winner Elaine Stritch (“30 Rock”), Tucker Albrizzi (Good Luck Charlie), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), Jodelle Ferland (Case 39, Silent Hill, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse).

A Trio Of Incredibly Boring International Posters For 'The Tall Man'

The other day we exclusively premiered the one-sheet for The Tall Man, now we’ve landed three international posters out of France (where it’s titled The Secret), along with a new still featuring Silent Hill‘s Jodelle Ferland.

Arriving in theaters August 31 from Image Entertainment, the trailer features star Jessica Biel (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Blade: Trinity, Total Recall) and the legend of “The Tall Man”. The footage is edited together incredibly “dramatic”, which I find interesting. I’ve heard it’s not incredibly violent like Martyrs.

Directed by Pascal Laugier of Martyrs fame, “In an isolated, slowly dying mining town, children are vanishing without a trace – abducted, the townsfolk whisper, by a mysterious entity known locally as “The Tall Man.” Town nurse Julia Denning (Biel) seems skeptical…until her young David disappears in the middle of night. Frantic to rescue the boy, Julia lives every parent’s darkest nightmare in this twisting, shock-around-each-corner thriller from acclaimed director Pascal Laugier.” Stephen McHattie (Pontypool, Watchmen), William B. Davis and Samantha Ferris also star.

Two Fresh Looks at Jessica Biel in The Tall Man

BD reader ‘Mrhy’ just tipped us over to a Jessica Biel fan site that has landed two new looks at Martyrs director Pascal Laugier’s The Tall Man.

Biel plays a nurse living in a small town where children have gone missing over the years, leaving no clues. One night, she finds her son’s bed empty and, desperately rushing downstairs, confronts a huge dark figure, with her son in his arms. Teach Grant, William Davis, Samantha Ferris, Jodelle Ferland, and Stephen McHattie also star.

Second Trailer for ParaNorman A Horror Fans (Animated) Wet Dream!

While the teaser was already quite impressive, the full trailer for LAIKA and Focus Features’ animated horror comedy ParaNorman is off-the-wall incredible. Shared after the break, the hysterical new trailer is jam-packed with horror goodness that shows obvious love for the genre (you can tell directors Sam Fell and Chris Butler are huge Evil Dead fans). IMO the creepiest portion of the footage is when Norman realizes that his deceased Grandmother is watching him in his room (at all times). He’s a growing boy, he needs his privacy (commencing grossed out skin crawl).

In ParaNorman, “a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead.
