Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story (Slamdance

A chronicle of the last great American showman, filmmaker William Castle, a master of ballyhoo who became a brand name in movie horror with his outrageous audience participation gimmicks.

Bat Out of Hell

The film centers on a red-eye flight from L.A. to New York during which hijackers confront the monstrous cargo.

As a red eye flight from Los Angeles to New York takes off, everything seems to be normal. That is until the co-pilot kills the pilot and a rouge group of coach passengers head into first class armed and ready to kill. Their claim – there are 9 passengers in the front of the plane who must die tonight. They are vampires, and our “heroes” will crash the plane if they have to in order to ensure what must be done is done. Not willing to die without fighting, the vampires unleash their fury in a battle of strength and wits six miles high, and all before the sun rises on an unknowing New York City.

American Grindhouse

American Grindhouse is a feature-length documentary that explores the hidden history of the American Exploitation Film. The movie digs deep into this often overlooked category of U.S. cinema and unearths the shameless and occasionally shocking origins of this popular entertainment. Exploitation Cinema has left an indelible mark on American culture, and this informative and amusing documentary proves that its principles – and popularity – endure to this day.

Exclusive: ‘Gremlins’ Reboot Has Seth Grahame-Smith Snacking After Midnight!

Here’s a late snack after midnight that will turn you into an angry little creature.

Bloody Disgusting has exclusively learned that Warner Bros. is officially moving ahead with a remake of Amblin’s 1984 Gremlins, instead of the long gestured sequel.

While a hunt is on for a director, Seth Grahame-Smith has been tapped to produce alongside David Katzenberg. Smith wrote Dark Shadows for Tim Burton, and recently completed his draft for the studio’s next Beetlejuice. He also penned Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter for Fox.

The original holiday classic was directed by Joe Dante and followed a boy, played by Zach Galligan, who inadvertently breaks 3 important rules concerning his new pet Mogwai and unleashes a horde of malevolent mischievous monsters on a small town.

No word if Smith will also write this new take on the Steven Spielberg-produced Gremlins. READ MORE

There Might Be A ‘Gremlins’ Reboot Coming Our Way…

Warner Bros. and Amblin might soon be dining after midnight. A few months back I spoke to original Gremlins director Joe Dante about the prospect of either a sequel or a reboot to the franchise. Things looked slightly different then and he was somewhat circumspect about the idea.

At the time Dante stated, “I haven’t had any formal talks, or even informal talks, with them about it. It’s a title in their library that sooner or later will be re-exploited. You can’t obviously do a sequel to the second picture because the cast is too old and I don’t know that that’s the way they’re thinking. I think they’d probably reboot the whole thing and start all over or go in a different direction – take the Gremlins someplace else… I do know that there have been attempts at Gremlins pictures. I know that people have gone in with pitches, but nothing has caught their eye. But I’m not positive that it’s entirely Warner Brothers’ decision. Because it’s an Amblin project, it probably has to be signed off on by Spielberg.

But now (via Vulture) that last piece may have finally fallen into place. Head inside for more… READ MORE

Shooting is set to take place late this month in Los Angeles. Variety reports.

Deadline adds that With the latest Skyfall co-writer John Logan and director Sam Mendes are re-teaming on the TV side. In what would be both Logan and Mendes’ series debut, the two have partnered for a drama project described as an origin story set in the 1800s London in the vein of “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” which also was set in 19th century Europe, including London, and featured an assortment of fictional literary characters. The Logan/Mendes project features such characters as Van Helsing and Doctor Frankenstein as they hunt for vampires.

Lastly, check out an interesting image from the set of Spike Lee’s Oldboy. Josh Brolin looks “interesting”, but what caught our eye in the weird demon looking dude in the background. The images come courtesy of The Daily Mail. In Oldboy, Brolin portrays a man who has been captured and imprisoned for years in a private cell with no idea who has put him there. Upon his release, the perplexed prisoner attempts to unravel the mystery of what happened to him while social worker Marie – played by Elizabeth Olsen – helps investigate his past. READ MORE

October officially starts today, and we’ve got a ton of Blu-ray and DVD horror releases coming our way. With a lot of them being films (or TV shows) a healthy majority of us have already seen, I decided to round-up a bunch of them in this giant article and put more focus on the disc specs rather than the films (and TV show) themselves. Check after the jump for my thoughts on The Hole (10/02/12), American Horror Story: Season One (09/25/12), The Game (09/25/12), and Pet Sematary (10/02/12) Blu-rays. Mr. Disgusting thoroughly enjoyed the film and I thought it was a lot of fun myself. I recently hopped on the phone with Dante and we talked at length about The Hole, his cool web project “Trailers From Hell” and some of his upcoming features. I’ll be sharing the entirety of the interview next week but I figured I’d whet your appetite with some Gremlins talk. There’s been a lot of speculation about the future of the franchise so I figured I’d check in to see if he could clear up any misconceptions. Specifically, we discuss whether or not he’d be willing to return to the franchise – and where he thinks it will go next. In short – something will obviously happen at some point, just don’t expect it to be too soon.

There’s also a tiny bit of Gremlins 2 talk. I’m a huge fan of the series and I think that film is an amazing feat in how much it breaks away from the norm of studio sequels. Head inside for the exchange. READ MORE

Joe Dante’s Family Horror Film ‘The Hole’ Dated For Home Video

One of my favorite TIFF movies a few years back *read the review) was Joe Dante’s incredible 3-D family film The Hole, which is finally arriving on home video September 25, says VideoETA. No word on specs or if the Blu-ray will be in 3-D (it was actually shot in 3-D and looks great), but we’ll update you as soon as word comes in.

From visionary director Joe Dante comes a suspense thriller that explores the fears and secrets buried deep in the human mind. Life couldn’t possibly get worse, or so thought 17-year-old Dane (Chris Massoglia) and his 10-year-old brother, Lucas (Nathan Gamble), when their single mother, Susan (Teri Polo), uproots them from New York City to the sleepy little town of Bensonville. For Dane the only exciting thing about their new town is the beautiful girl next door, Julie (Haley Bennett). With Susan spending more and more time at work, Dane and Lucas are left unattended to explore the depths of their eerie new residence. With Dane paying more attention to Julie, he has far less time and patience for his little brother. But then everything changes when they find a sinister bottomless hole under a locked trap door in the basement. As the brothers experiment with the hole, they realize that the cold pit goes on forever. They drop a nail and never hear it hit bottom. They lower a flashlight and a video camera, and they get consumed by the darkness. Hoping for some answers about the house’s past, Dane and Lucas bring Julie in on their new discovery. When the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed. With strange shadows lurking around every corner and past nightmares coming to life, the trio will have to come face-to-face with their darkest fears to put an end to THE HOLE.

[Blu-ray Review] ‘Gremlins’ and ‘Gremlins 2: The New Batch’

One of the greatest movies ever made was released in June of 1984. Produced by Steven Spielberg, written by Chris Columbus, and starring Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates and an adorable furry puppet, Gremlins is still amazing to watch. With merchandising – including a Hardee’s deal with the story in a series of 5 books on 45 (yes, records), coloring books, school supplies, Colorform playsets and more – the film became a massive hit with children despite its violent and terrifying antagonists. In 1989, an over the top sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, was released. READ MORE

[Special Feature] Where Are All The Great Werewolf Movies?

The werewolf is the most under-appreciated and misused of all of the classic horror creatures. Sure, we get all kinds of movies with werewolves in them, but more often than not those films seem more concerned with mentioning werewolves and then showing some bizarre half-assed approximation of them. Like they’re checking off a box on a list.

Obviously one of the most recent and popular misuses of the werewolf would be in the Twilight films, but dissecting those is like taking candy from a baby and I don’t want to spend too much time on it. Suffice to say – they look more like foxes, transform in the daytime, communicate via telepathy and are generally pretty lame. They’re also prone to jorts, which makes them almost like Native American Incredible Hulks who turn into dogs instead of big green guys.

But it’s not up to some teen franchise to carry the torch of one of our best monsters. That falls under the stewardship of actual horror films. So why do most of them drop the ball so badly? Incompetence certainly plays into it and is probably the biggest factor, but there’s still a lot of people with actual talent out there missing the mark. Why?

One of my theories is that too many of these movies seem overly concerned with adding a unique spin or futzing with the rules. I’m not saying there’s not room for that – any genre should be open to reinterpretation. But there are so few great “classic” werewolf movies that maybe we should concentrate on getting a few more of them under our belts. I think that needs to happen before we can expect any spin or subversion of the genre to have any real impact, because right now we’re spinning and subverting something with such a decentralized compass that it just feels random. For example, if you’re going straight into your Nazi Demon Werewolf movie without even exploring some of the inherent possibilities the creature’s metaphor, you’re doing it wrong.

Let’s talk great werewolf movies. And why The Howling might not be one of them. Head inside for more. READ MORE
