The Knights of Badassdom

Penned by Kevin Dreyfuss and Matt Wall, the black comedy follows a group of costumed LARPers (Live Action Role Players) who accidentally release a real-life Heavy Metal demon. The demons are going to be created by Spectral Motion, previously responsible for various Hellboy hellions and several Last Stand X-Men.

In this humorous fantasy adventure from IndieVest Pictures, Joe (Ryan Kwanten) is a heavy metal rocker who’s just gone through a painful breakup with his girlfriend, Beth (Margarita Levieva). His concerned roommates (Steve Zahn, Peter Dinklage) kidnap him to their LARP (Live Action Role Playing) gathering, where he enters a realm of fantasy escapism in which pretend knights, elves, and barbarians clash with foam weaponry on a mock battlefield. When Joe’s “sorcerer” roommate (Zahn) inadvertently summons a deadly succubus that takes Beth’s seductive form, bloody reality crashes down upon their fantasy world. Once LARPers start to turn up dead, the make-believe wizards and warriors must become the real life heroes they have been pretending to be in order to conquer the evil that has been unleashed.

Joe Lynch Whisking Salma Hayek To Serbia For ‘Everly’!

Salma Hayek (Savages, The Faculty, From Dusk Till Dawn) is set to star in Joe Lynch’s actioner Everly, the new project from Adam Ripp and Rob Paris’s Crime Scene Pictures shingle.

Hayek will star as a down-on-her-luck woman, stuck in her apartment, who must fend off waves of assassins sent by her ex, a dangerous mob boss. She’ll be replacing Kate Hudson, who had previously been earmarked for the role. Yale Hannon penned the script, which was featured on the Hollywood Black List.

The film shoots in Belgrade, Serbia this summer. I’m quite glad Lynch (Wrong Turn 2) is working on a new feature while all of the business malarky around Knights Of Badassdom (hopefully) gets sorted out. Everly apparently takes place in one room, I’m not sure why that room needs to be in Serbia – but I’m speaking with Lynch soon and will find out.

Get A Behind The Scenes Look At The Creature Effects In ‘The Knights Of Badassdom’!

While we wait on official word regarding what sort of fallout (good or bad) may have come from the sales screening of The Knights of Badassdom last week (more on that here), we’ve got a look at look at one of the film’s primary monsters in the form of some videos showing a stuntman trying out a rough version of the suit.

In this comedic fantasy adventure, Joe (Ryan Kwanten) is a heavy metal rocker who’s just gone through a painful breakup with his girlfriend, Beth (Margarita Levieva). ‘The Knights Of Badassdom’ Is Screening Tomorrow In An Allegedly 70 Minute Cut That Is NOT Joe Lynch’s Version Or Vision

Yuck. I’ve been anxiously waiting to see The Knights of Badassdom for over two years now. But the version I’ve been dying for is the 90 minute Joe Lynch cut – not this alleged 70 minute version that was assembled by an IndieVest CEO seemingly intent on selling the film without regard for continuity or quality. I’ve reached out to Lynch who has declined to comment. If any of you attend this screening, please be aware of the possibility that you are not seeing the film as it was intended.

If this open letter – which I recommend you read in its entirety – to the board of IndieVest directors is indeed correct, its CEO Wade Bradley has done quite the hack job on the edit, cutting both producer Mark Burton and writer Matt Wall (not to mention Joe Lynch) out of the process. In fact, the letter goes so far as to say, “Mr. Bradley set about editing KoB independently and in violation of his contract with director Joe Lynch per the Directors Guild of America Creative Rights Handbook. The most recent edit is roughly 70 minutes long and includes significant changes to the original story and concept.

In case you’ve been under a rock for the past few years, here’s the synposis (of Lynch’s version anyway, lord knows what the new cut is about),”In this comedic fantasy adventure, Joe (Ryan Kwanten) is a heavy metal rocker who’s just gone through a painful breakup with his girlfriend, Beth (Margarita Levieva). Once LARPers start to turn up dead, the make-believe wizards and warriors must join forces with other adventurers (Summer Glau, Danny Pudi) to become the real life heroes they have been pretending to be and conquer the unleashed evil.

If a buyer happens to pick up this film tomorrow, let’s pray it’s one who will readily confer with Lynch and release his director’s cut. If whomever buys it shows no intention of doing so, an online petition/letter writing campaign might be in order. READ MORE

[Good Scenes In Bad Movies] ‘Wrong Turn 2′ Edition!!!

I actually like Wrong Turn 2. I think it’s a fun entry with some cool kills. But that doesn’t mean I can stop The Wolfman (@TheWolfmanCometh – on the boards) from selecting it as his next target! You’ve already read his assessments of House Of Wax and Ghost Ship, so you know how he rolls. Just because you don’t like a movie, that doesn’t necessarily mean every single frame of it is bad! And that’s precisely the point of his column here.

Production Begins On Second Season Of “Holliston”

FEARnet’s original irreverent horror-comedy series “Holliston” has started production in Los Angeles on a 10-episode order for season 2 plus a one-hour holiday special set to air at the end of this year. The entire cast, including music legends Dee Snider (“Celebrity Apprentice” and Twisted Sister) and Dave “Oderus Urungus” Brockie (GWAR), will be returning for the second season in the show created, written and directed by series star Adam Green (“Frozen,” the “Hatchet” franchise). This season’s highlights will feature an animated episode, as well as a hilarious take on the “found footage” fad, and is chock full of over the top special effects.

The talented cast features Green, Joe Lynch (“Knights of Badassdom,” “Wrong Turn 2: Dead End”), Laura Ortiz (“The Hills Have Eyes”), and Corri English (“Unrest”). Special celebrity guest stars in season 2 include Kane Hodder (“FRIDAY THE 13TH VI-X,” the “Hatchet” films), Bill Moseley (“The Devil’s Rejects,” “Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2”), Sid Haig (“Spider Baby,” “House of 1,000 Corpses”) and Danielle Harris (“Halloween 4 & 5”), among others.

Set in the small town of Holliston, MA, this offbeat series follows the lives of two friends (Adam Green and Joe Lynch), chasing the dream of becoming prominent horror movie filmmakers. In their pursuit, they struggle with financial woes and the opposite sex, while working at a local cable access channel where they host a late night movie show, “The Movie Crypt.” Snider plays the role of Lance Rockett, the Hair Metal-obsessed owner of the small cable company with dreams of Rock superstardom, and Brockie as Oderus Urungus, Adam’s twisted, closet-dwelling version of Jiminy Cricket who is always there to offer misguided advice and a well-timed insult. TV: “Holliston” Fans! There’s A Live-Chat With Cast And Crew Tonight At 7PM PST / 10PM EST

When I first heard about “Holliston” I wasn’t sure what to expect. I didn’t know if it was going to be an ongoing meta commentary about the careers of Joe Lynch (director of Wrong Turn 2 the upcoming Knights Of Badassdom and the even more upcoming Everly) and Adam Green (Hatchet, Frozen) or if it was going to be some weird “Family Guy”-esque string of horror non-sequiturs. Turns out it’s neither. As you may know by now, it’s 100% a sitcom. Not a documentary style half-hour comedy like “Parks And Rec” or a single-cam show like “Community”, but an old-school three-camera proscenium sitcom taped in front of an audience.

And it’s first season was enough of a hit that the cast and crew are prepping Season 2. In fact, tonight at 7pm PST / 10pm EST, the cast of Holliston will be conducting a live video chat from Season 2 rehearsal. Fans can chat directly with Adam Green, Joe Lynch, Corri English, and Laura Ortiz as well as Season 2 director Sean Becker and cinematographer Will Barratt as they show you an intimate look inside the ArieScope studio rehearsal space, answer your chat room questions, and discuss the upcoming second season which begins filming in just a few short weeks. HollistonLand40212 [Interview] Adam Green And Joe Lynch Talk Sitcoms, Horror Fans, And All That Is Holliston!

When I first heard about “Holliston” I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I didn’t know if it was going to be an ongoing meta commentary about the careers of Joe Lynch (director of Wrong Turn 2 and Knights Of Badassdom) and Adam Green (Hatchet, Frozen) or if it was going to be some weird “Family Guy”-esque string of horror non-sequiturs. Not a documentary style half-hour comedy like “Parks And Rec” or a single-cam show like “Community”, but an old-school three-camera proscenium sitcom taped in front of an audience.

While it’s a show made by, and in part for, horror fans – it’s worth noting that “Holliston” is concerned with more than just in-jokes and gory references (although there are plenty). The characters of Laura (Laura Ortiz) and Corri (Corri English) are featured almost as prominently as Lynch and Green, and the show has a lot on its mind in regard to relationships, disappointment, and the pursuit of “the dream”.

In advance of tonight’s premiere of the show, I visited the duo at Green’s Ariescope offices this past Friday. We chatted about a wide-ranging swath of topics – the show, Hatchet 3, Digging Up The Marrow and Lynch’s upcoming Everly – for about an hour and a half before Green and I sat down to watch some additional “Holliston” footage (and definitively conclude that “Mechanical Animals” is the best Manson record).

”Holliston” premieres tonight at 1030PM ET on FEARnet. If you don’t have cable, the show is available for purchase on iTunes 24 hours after the initial airing.

TV: Its The Full Promo For Holliston

Adam Green’s (Hatchet, Hatchet II, Frozen) long-time dream project comes to life with horror pal Joe Lynch (Knights of Badassdom, Wrong Turn 2) when their horror sitcom “Holliston” premieres on FEARnet television Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012, at 10:30 p.m. ET.

While horror fans have heard quite a bit about the project, Hitfix has now premiered the first full 60-second promo that’s been added below.

“Holliston” is a riotous and offbeat multi-camera, buddy comedy set in the town of Holliston (near Boston). Described by its creators as “”The Big Bang Theory” meets Evil Dead II,” the series shines a light on the post-college life where everything is a struggle, and nothing works out like it’s supposed to, with terrifyingly funny results as Adam and Joe struggle to become big-time horror filmmakers and make ends meet.

“Holliston” stars Green and Lynch along with Corri English (Unrest, The Bedford Diaries, lead singer of Brokedown Cadillac), Laura Ortiz (The Hills Have Eyes, Horton Hears A Who), Dee Snider (“Celebrity Apprentice”, Twisted Sister, Strangeland, radio/television personality), and Oderus Urungus (Alien lead singer from legendary heavy metal band GWAR). The regular cast will welcome a bevy of guest stars and celebrity cameos during its first season. Upcoming guest appearances include: Colton Dunn (Hatchet II, “Parks and Recreation”), Danielle Harris (Halloween 4 and 5), Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th Parts VII and VIII, Hatchet), John Landis (An American Werewolf in London, Animal House), Derek Mears (Friday the 13th), Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects), Brian Posehn (“The Sarah Silverman Show”), Parry Shen (Hatchet, Better Luck Tomorrow), Tony Todd (Candyman, Hatchet), Ray Wise (Chillerama, “Reaper”). [EFM '12] Alliance Films Nabs UK and Canadian Rights To Violent ‘Everly’

Marking the second major deal of the European Film Market, Alliance Films has snapped up U.K. and Canadian rights to Kate Hudson starrer Everly, which was just announced last week.

Deal is estimated to be north of $1 million and saw a number of other foreign buyers at the table, notably eOne, which was also in the final running for the female-driven actioner.

Nick Meyer’s Sierra/Affinity has been shopping the $10 million actioner, helmed by Joe Lynch, to buyers here at the fest, which sees Hudson star as a down-on-her-luck woman, stuck in her apartment, fending off waves of assassins sent by her ex, a dangerous mob boss.

Story is based on a concept created by Lynch (Wrong Turn 2, Chillerama, Knights of Badassdom). Yale Hannon penned the script, which was featured on the Hollywood Black List.

Pic, which is produced by Adam Ripp and Rob Paris’ Crime Scene Pictures, also sold to Splendid for Germany, Switzerland and Benelux for just north of $1 million. READ MORE

Kate Hudson (The Skeleton Key) is set to star in Joe Lynch‘s actioner Everly, the new project from Adam Ripp and Rob Paris’s Crime Scene Pictures shingle, reports Variety.

Sounding like it could tip in the direction of “ultra-violence,” Hudson will star as a down-on-her-luck woman, stuck in her apartment, who must fend off waves of assassins sent by her ex, a dangerous mob boss.

It’s based on a concept created by Lynch, who directed Wrong Turn 2, Knights of Badassdom and parts of Chillerama. Yale Hannon penned the script, which was featured on the Hollywood Black List.

Who Woulda Thunk? ‘Chillerama’ Plays Better Without ‘Werebear’!

ChillLand120211 Who Woulda Thunk? Chillerama Plays Better Without Werebear!

When I saw Chillerama at the Hollywood Forever cemetery over the summer it was with grave (sorry) disappointment that I had to report that it hadn’t exactly blown my skirt up. Despite liking some elements of the film I had to give it a 4/10 Review.

It was a bummer because I typically like Adam Green and Joe Lynch’s output. And even though I especially dug Adam Rifkin’s segment, I can’t just review the bits I like – I have to review the whole film. Movies are more than the sum of their parts, which is an axiom that can take a harsh turn when you have a part as rancid as “I Was A Teenage Werebear“. A gangrenous leg can kill an entire man after all. But what happens if you remove that leg? Your patient lives.

Earlier this week, I caught a screening of Chillerama at USC in which the “Werebear” segment was omitted. The result was markedly better. Since it was a screening for students it was decided that only the segments of the directors who were able to attend would be shown – to ensure more time (and a more relevant line of questioning) for the Q&A afterwards.

I have to say that, as I suspected, the whole thing just feels and flows better. Without the additional segment, I was no longer too worn out and exhausted to enjoy the merits of the film.

Now, it’s still not Green and Lynch’s best work. It’s a side project movie and it feels like one. But at least now the cheap gory thrills that it has to offer can be taken more in stride and it’s something that you and your buddies can crack open a few beers and watch without feeling like an endurance challenge. “Zom-B-Movie” benefits greatly from the omission since we’re not required to spend too much time away from its characters and “The Diary Of Ann Frankenstein” feels more like a simple pleasure rather than something you watch while recovering from the wrath of “Werebear”. “Wadzilla” remains the high opening note that it always was. It’s also worth noting that movies like this just weren’t meant to be two hours long – 90 or so minutes is far more manageable.

Now this version isn’t available for purchase, but seeing it reinforces a hunch I had back when I wrote our chopping list. If you’re a fan of these guys, it’s safe to pick it up on Blu-ray. Just make sure your remote is handy for the one (or two) clicks it takes to make the viewing more expedient. READ MORE

[Special Report] Adam Green, Joe Lynch And Adam Rifkin Speak From Amongst The Graves At ‘Chillerama’ Premiere!

Late last week I attended the US Premiere of Chillerama at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. After a tranquil hour milling about the interior of the main mausoleum (I’d obviously seen screenings in the cemetery but had never been inside the crypt before), sipping something called `Chill Out” (actually kind of tasty, but I like weird sour stuff), it was time to hit the red carpet.

The next hour would not be so tranquil. The red carpet was about 20 feet long (very, very small) and was EXTREMELY crowded. In short, it was utter chaos. The line started out orderly, but then Tim Sullivan (director of the Chillerama segment “I Was A Teenage Werebear”) started ‘directing’ the actual press event. He was pulling people in and out of interviews with various outlets and shuffling the order of who would walk where. Pretty soon it descended/ascended into chaos. Fun and exciting with lots of cool people, but chaos nonetheless. In fact, Tim was so busy hopping around I never got the chance to interview him. Maybe next time!

I did, however, get to spend a few minutes with the other three other directors of Chillerama. Adam Rifkin, Joe Lynch and Adam Green were all incredibly gracious and spoke with genuine enthusiasm about their love for this film, their upcoming projects and the horror community in general. Joe Lynch (despite being punched in the groin during our interview by Joel David Moore) also had some surprisingly fond comments for the MPAA.

Because the press line was so hectic I actually had to chase Green down a bit for my final interview of the night – right before he took the stage to introduce the film. He seemed incredibly grateful to be there (after a full day on set shooting “Holliston”) and his appreciation for his success and his fans was palpable. It was clearly a big night for him, and his fondness for the genre was legitimately infectious. It was a nice primer before I joined the audience to watch the film.

I also snagged a few quotes from Joel David Moore (“The Diary Of Anne Frankenstein”, Avatar), Lin Shaye (“I Was A Teenage Werebear”, A Nightmare On Elm Street), AJ Bowen (“Zom-B-Movie”, You’re Next), Kane Hodder (“The Diary Of Anne Frankenstein”, Friday The 13th Parts 7-10) and Derek Mears (Friday The 13th 2009, MacGruber).

Without further ado I present – in the order in which they appeared at the event – some of the highlights of the red carpet. Hit the jump to check it out!

Chillerama (limited)

It’s the closing night at the last drive-in theater in America and Cecil B. Kaufman has planned the ultimate marathon of lost film prints to unleash upon his faithful cinephile patrons. Four films so rare that they have never been exhibited publicly on American soil until this very night! With titles like “Wadzilla,” “I Was A Teenage Werebear,” “The Diary of Anne Frankenstein,” and “Zom-B-Movie,” Chillerama not only celebrates the golden age of drive-in B horror shlock but also spans over four decades of cinema with something for every bad taste.

An anthology featuring the works of Adam Rifkin (“Wadzilla”), Joe Lynch (“Zom B Movie”), Tim Sullivan (“I Was a Teenage Werebear”) and Adam Green (“The Diary of Anne Frankenstein”).

‘Chillerama’ Trailer Emerges From The Grindhouse, What Do You Think?

The Chillerama trailer has finally arrived in anticipation of the film’s premiere on September 15th at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles.

So far it looks pretty fun to me. I’m not completely blown away (and I suspect I’ll like some of the four installments more than others) but I suppose the point is that this is kind of a lark for all involved, a chance to stretch out before their next feature.

From the depraved minds of directors Adam Rifkin (Detroit Rock City, The Dark Backward), Tim Sullivan (2001 Maniacs, Driftwood), Adam Green (Hatchet, Frozen), and Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2, Knights of Badassdom), Chillerama is a festival of gore, guts, goofiness and good times.

Lust for Summer Glau in New ‘Knights of Badassdom’ Image

Director Joe Lynch broke on the scene in 2007 with Wrong Turn 2: Dead End, a shockingly good direct-to-disc sequel that proved his was the real deal. With his segment for Chillerama looking pretty effin’ rad, all eyes are on The Knights of Badassdom, his Role Playing horror film that’s getting some serious love at this month’s San Diego Comic-Con.

To tide fans over, the official Facebook has been updated with a look at Summer Glau in the horror that also stars Ryan Kwanten, Steve Zahn, Peter Dinklage and Danny Pudi. It’s just a shot of one of her with a sword and one of her beautiful eyes, but it’s easy to get lost in there. Dig on it inside and watch for plenty more soon.

Ryan Kwanten Slain by Dinklage in New ‘Knights of Badassdom’ Image!

Wrong Turn 2 director Joe Lynch has revealed a second photo from his upcoming horror epic The Knights of Badassdom, which follows a group of costumed LARPers (Live Action Role Players) who accidentally release a real-life Heavy Metal demon.

The second pic features Dead Silence/”True Blood” star Ryan Kwanten with a sword to the throat, courtesy of Peter Dinklage.

I seriously can’t wait to see the demons created by Spectral Motion, previously responsible for various Hellboy hellions and several X-Men.

After being dumped by his sexy girlfriend Beth, Joe (Kwanten) reluctantly decides to join Eric (Zahn) and his LARPing (Live Action Role Players) friends in the woods rather than stay behind and feel sorry for his newly single status. There he meets hot, ass-kicking, intimidating LARPer Gwen (Glau), and finds himself plunged into a surreal adventure wilder than he ever imagined when a make-believe wizard casts an all-too-real spell from an ancient book. That spell releases an actual demon with a taste for human blood — and souls — that starts systematically decimating the players in this suddenly deadly “game.” Will our guys become the heroes they have been pretending to be before time runs out?
