You’re Next

In ‘You’re Next’ the Davison family comes under attack from a terrifying group of sadistic murderers during a family reunion getaway. Barricaded in their secluded vacation home, they fight off a barrage of axes, crossbows and machetes from both inside and outside the house. However, the masked killers didn’t count on Erin (Vinson), the young girlfriend of the eldest Davison son whose mysterious past has made her very difficult to kill.

Official: One of the smartest and most terrifying films in years, the film reinvents the genre by putting a fresh twist on home-invasion horror. When a gang of masked, ax-wielding murderers descend upon the Davison family reunion, the hapless victims seem trapped…until an unlikely guest of the family proves to be the most talented killer of all.

Another Viral ‘You’re Next’ Image Haunts Some ‘Peeples’!

We’ve got yet another awesome viral image (via Collider) from the amazing You’re Next (review here), in theaters August 23.

After popping up at a Wedding and on a Temptation Bus Ad, another one of the film’s masked killers has popped up on a poster for Peeples in New York City, defacing yet another perfectly good Lionsgate poster.

Another ‘You’re Next’ Animal Invades Los Angeles Bus Shelter Ad!!

Back on Sunday we told you about the coolest viral campaign we’ve seen all year – Lionsgate had printed bus stop ads for The Big Wedding, only they were invaded by one of the “animals” from their forthcoming slasher You’re Next (review here), in theaters August 23.

While the ads had previously been reported across the New York area, an eagle-eyed reader in Culver City, California confirmed that Los Angeles is also being stalked by the killers from Adam Wingard’s You’re Next! Inside we have an insanely cool bus shelter ad for Tyler Perry’s Temptation that reflects yet another “animal” from the film. It’s unclear how old the Temptation photo is as the movie came out end of March, but these ads must have been up for a while. Lionsgate would not return our calls to comment. Special thanks to Bloody reader “Justin K.” for the the image and news tip!

This ‘You’re Next’ Viral Is The Coolest Thing I’ve Seen All Year!!

Update: Another bus shelter ad was spotted in Los Angeles! Lionsgate has just won the year with their absolutely ingenious viral campaign for Adam Wingard’s You’re Next (review), which opens in theaters August 23.

While we’re unaware of how many cities partook, Los Angeles and New York bus stops reportedly carry displays for Lionsgate’s upcoming comedy, The Big Wedding, which reflect one of the “animals” from the hotly anticipated slasher You’re Next!!

Looking at the following image, I can’t tell of there’s an actual reflection or if Lionsgate “printed” the animal on the top layer of the Big Wedding poster; either way, what you’ll see inside is pretty haunting and beyond eye-catching. Take a look and marvel at the brilliance behind Lionsgate’s marketing department. What do ya’ think?

The ‘You’re Next’ Trailer Is Here! And It’s Worth The Wait!!!

It’s funny – a March 28th trailer release for a movie that comes out on August 23rd is still fairly early. At least it’s not late late. Yet, because Lionsgate’s You’re Next has been anticipated for so long (due to the Summit/Lionsgate merger, not due to quality), it feels like it’s been an eternity. A lot of you have been asking us for the trailer for 18 months… so we’re just as stoked as you are that it’s finally here. And it’s great! I dig how the trailer sells the suspense and horror of the film without giving anything else away – there’s still a lot you haven’t seen (it’s relatively spoiler free in that regard). I also dig the moment when the chorus of “Perfect Day” comes back into the mix. From what I gather this is just the beginning of a pretty big marketing push.

Meet One Of “The Animals” On This Exclusive ‘You’re Next’ Poster Premiere!

2013 is primed to be one of the best years in horror – and thanks to Lionsgate we’ll be heading into the Halloween season with the beloved festival slasher You’re Next (read our review), which takes an ax to theaters on August 23. The Toronto International Film Festival smash hit blew the minds of the Midnight Madness audience, as well as this month’s SXSW Film Festival in Austin, Texas. Good luck finding a negative review.

When a gang of masked, ax-wielding murderers descend upon the Davison family reunion, the hapless victims seem trapped…until an unlikely guest of the family proves to be the most talented killer of all.

Bloody Disgusting is excited to exclusively premiere one of three You’re Next teaser posters. It displays one of the film’s “animals”, as well as the tagline: “Did you remember to lock your door?” It’s an astoundingly artistic one-sheet that’s both haunting and beautiful. It’ll definitely grab people’s eyes as they’re walking through a theater lobby…

Still, the best part of the slasher is that it boasts an astounding cast that includes Sharni Vinson (the upcoming Patrick remake), Nick Tucci (Choose, Undocumented), Wendy Glenn (11-11-11), AJ Bowen (A Horrible Way to Die, The House of the Devil, The Signal), Joe Swanberg (A Horrible Way to Die, V/H/S), Margaret Laney, Amy Seimetz (A Horrible Way to Die), Ti West (The Roost, The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers), Calvin Reeder (V/H/S, The Rambler), Larry Fessenden (Habit, The Last Winter), Kate Lyn Sheil (V/H/S), Barbara Crampton (80′s fav who starred in Re-Animator, From Beyond and Castle Freak) and Rob Moran. [SXSW '13 Interview] AJ Bowen On ‘You’re Next’, ‘Grow Up, Tony Phillips’ And Not “Faking It” Through Horror

AJ Bowen (A Horrible Way To Die) had both You’re Next and Grow Up, Tony Phillips at this year’s SXSW festival in Austin, TX. While the first film was one of my favorites of 2011 (and one of my favorites of 2013 – it holds up), you probably need no introduction to it – except for the question many of you ask at this point, “where is the trailer?” The answer to that seems to be that it will be paired with Evil Dead in the first week of April. Update: It’s March 28th for the trailer. I’m going to miss not getting that question every day for 18 months!

The latter film, Grow Up, Tony Phillips, is the 4th directorial effort from genre favorite Emily Hagins (My Sucky Teen Romance). While it’s by no stretch of the imagination a horror film – it is a sweet and poignant look at Halloween and what it means to embrace that holiday in an “age appropriate” manner. In that regard it’s almost a (funny) dramatization of a character that might have appeared in An American Scream. If you’re a fan of Hagins’ earlier work, I’d recommend checking it out regardless of genre – it’s definitely a more polished iteration of that aesthetic.

AJ Bowen plays “Pete” in the film, and the role couldn’t possibly be more different from what he achieves in You’re Next. I caught up with Bowen after the fest wound down to talk about what it was like to have two films there and get his thoughts the delicate nature of moving in and out (and back into) the horror genre. I also tried to scoop him on Ti West’s upcoming Eli Roth produced The Sacrament – but he did an expertly friendly job of shutting me down on that one.

[SXSW '13 Interview] Director Adam Wingard On Making ‘You’re Next’ And His Plans For ‘The Guest’ And ‘Dead Spy Running’!

Lionsgate’s You’re Next screened over the weekend to a packed crowd at this year’s SXSW Festival and, after 18 months of praise, everyone seemed to agree that the film lived up to the hype. One of the reasons behind the film’s creative success is Adam Wingard‘s incredibly assured hand as a director. I’ve always been fond of his work, but You’re Next is unlike anything else currently on his resume – a taut, crowd-pleasing horror film that has a uniquely addictive energy. I sat down with him after the screening to talk about the film’s violence and his approach towards making it feel huge.

In the film directed by Wingard and written by Simon Barrett, (A Horrible Way to Die, V/H/S,V/H/S/2), “One of the smartest and most terrifying films in years, the film reinvents the genre by putting a fresh twist on home-invasion horror. [SXSW '13 Interview] Sharni Vinson On The Late Nights Of ‘You’re Next’!

Lionsgate’s You’re Next screened over the weekend to a packed crowd at this year’s SXSW Festival. While it was my third time seeing the film (which gets better with every viewing), it was the first time I’d seen it with a big audience and I wasn’t anticipating just how much of a crowd pleaser it would actually be. One of the most important components to that success is the performance Sharni Vinson delivers as Erin, the highly capable protagonist. I sat down with her the morning after the screening to talk about her role and the fact that she flourished during a shoot that many found exhausting.

In the film directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett, (A Horrible Way to Die, V/H/S,V/H/S/2), “One of the smartest and most terrifying films in years, the film reinvents the genre by putting a fresh twist on home-invasion horror. A huge thank you to Bloody member DarkHolmes7 for tipping us off to a new interview with Eli Roth, who reveals the top secret plot of The Sacrament, the latest genre offering from horror fav Ti West (The Innkeepers, V/H/S, The House of the Devil, The Roost).

[Remember This?] When Being Dead The Whole Time Was A Twist?

I didn’t have enough room in the headline for this article’s subtitle, which is And Remember When “They Were All The Same Person” Was A Twist? This whole thing has been buzzing around in my head since a recent argument regarding the ending to Haute Tension, which I found sort of ridiculous. It’s the standard “The Protagonist Is Insane And Actually The Killer” (aka “The Split Personality” twist). But I have to say it got me thinking that this trope actually doesn’t bug me as much as the other two, since it usually says more about the characters at hand.

Still, I’m not sure what happened to our brains over the past 14 years, but you can’t call something a twist if everyone knows it’s coming. I feel like horror needs to widen its bag of tricks beyond the “they were dead”, the “split personality” and “the protag is crazy” tropes which seem to be the only three ploys in regular use for filmmakers seeking to pull the rug out from under their audience.

The “dead” thing worked for The Sixth Sense, and it sort of worked two years later with The Others. It also worked in 1962′s Carnival Of Souls. But we’ve seen it employed at least twice more recently in Passengers and The Devil’s Ground. I’m not denigrating those films necessarily, but it should probably end there. Similarly the “split ” angle didn’t even quite work in Identity and it certainly didn’t work in The Ward. It was sort of used in Shutter Island as well, but it worked there because it was actually source of catharsis for its character.
