[News Bites] ‘Carrie’s’ Gym Report Card; ‘RoboCop’ Armor; Sweet Teaser For ‘Dyatlov Pass Incident’

Here’s a quick news round up to get this evening party started. It begins with a look at one of Carrie’s report cards. Says the Facebook page: “Her gym teacher, Ms. Desjardin, was obviously aware that Carrie was in need of some extra attention. But did she know how much attention was needed?” Check out the report card inside. Kimberly Peirce’s Carrie, which stars Chloe Moretz as the title character alongside Julianne Moore, Alex Russell, Ansel Elgort, Gabriella Wilde, Judy Greer and Portia Doubleday, was recently moved to October 18 of this year.

Also inside, via Latino Review, you’ll find a picture of an EM-208 Humanoid Drone, which is part of OmniCorp’s product line from MGM’s RoboCop reboot/sequel in theaters February 7, 2014. Director Jose Padilha reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel Kinnaman as the title character, Gary Oldman as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson as media mogul Pat Novak. Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael Kenneth Williams, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Michael Keaton and Aimee Garcia also star. Peter Weller played the character in the original and the 1990 sequel.

Lastly, we’ve added a Russian teaser for Renny Harlin’s The Dyatlov Pass Incident, and it looks awesome. While we don’t get too much from the Russian-language tease, the true story is off-the-charts freaky and is sure to deliver quite a punch in theaters. “It follows a group of students on a trek to investigate the true life mystery of nine Russian skiers who befell an unexplained death while skiing in the Russian mountains in 1959. To this day, their deaths have been one of the most bizarre unsolved mysteries of the 20th century.READ MORE

Our friends at Collider discovered a super weird featurette for MGM’s forthcoming RoboCop that’s being used for selling licensing for related products.

It features concept art for multiple generations of RoboCop’s suit, a re-imagined ED-209, unmmanned drones and futuristic weaponry, the video also includes commentary from star Joel Kinnaman and director Padilha, along with producer Eric Newman, VFX Supervisor Jamie Price and Production Designer Martin Whist.

Also starring Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish, Jay Baruchel and Jackie Earle Haley, RoboCop opens in theaters February 7th, 2014. READ MORE

Twitter dude 81 played paparazzi scoring your first ever look at what could be the top secret new look of RoboCop!

Joel Kinnaman dons the suit in the Jose Padilha-directed reboot now rebuilding in theaters February 13, 2014.

When a follower noted they had yet to see that design online, he replied, “the whole film he will wear that one… that’s the new slick design..” As in slick new design I think he means “Halo” or “Iron Man”-inspired tin can. It makes sense though. There are multiple suits in the script – a la the first Iron Man movie – the black one we saw earlier being one of them and this one (likely) being another.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes - 3

[News Bites] New ‘Apes Writers, ‘RoboCop’ Cruiser, NBC’s “Mockingbird Lane,” “Hannibal” and “Do No Harm”

Mark Bomback, whose writing credits include Live Free or Die Hard, Total Recall and the forthcoming The Wolverine, has been tapped to work on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, says THR. Matt Reeves (Let Me In, Cloverfield), stepping into the shoes originally worn by Rupert Wyatt, is directing the sequel to Fox’s 2011 hit, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, with the new movie continuing the story of how ultra-intelligent simian Caesar presides over the fall of human civilization. Andy Serkis is returning as Caesar. Fox has set a May 23, 2014, release date.

Now in theaters February 7, 2014, CBM has anded a slew of new behind-the-scenes paparazzi shots from RoboCop that feature Joel Kinnaman as the title character on his motorcycle, as well as a futuristic police cruiser. Director Jose Padilha reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel Kinnaman as the title character, Gary Oldman as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson as media mogul Pat Novak.

Airing October 26 on NBC is the failed pilot presentation of Mockingbird Lane, the reboot of “The Munsters” that will now air as a TV special. We’ve received the synopsis and TVLine presents the first ever cast photo. “Sweet little Eddie Munster (Mason Cook) is a normal kid about to enter the horrors of puberty. Truth is, he’s about to discover that for him becoming a teenager means growing hair in truly unexpected places — as in all over his body — every time the moon is full! Eddie’s got it pretty good though. His loving, supportive, run-of-the-mill family includes his mom Lily (Portia de Rossi), the daughter of Dracula; his dad Herman (Jerry O’Connell), who brings new meaning to “Frankenstein”; and Grandpa (Eddie Izzard), who would give Dracula a run for his money if he weren’t actually Dracula! Of course then there’s creepy cousin Marilyn (Charity Wakefield), who’s really the odd one because she’s so completely normal.” This new, reimagined version of the classic 1960’s comedy “The Munsters” is based on executive producer Bryan Fuller’s (“Pushing Daisies,” “Heroes”) script and was directed by executive producer Bryan Singer (“X-Men” film series, “House”).

Lastly, we’ve landed full synopses and banners for NBC’s “Hannibal” and “Do No Harm.” READ MORE

[Box Office] Sony Pushes Both ‘Elysium’ and ‘RoboCop’ WAY Back

Sony/TriStar has made a few major dafe shifts moving District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium from March 1, 2013 to August 9, 2013. This can be seen as a vote of confidence in the film, maybe the execs think it can hold its own in the summertime.

In even worse news, Elysium is snatching up RoboCop‘s old slot, which MGM has pushed all the way back to February 7, 2014. This can be seen as the studio almost kind of dumping the film, which is weird since they’re still shooting. Maybe I’m wrong, but this isn’t a great sign for RoboCop.

In Elysium, “In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) will stop at nothing to preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium – but that doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in by any means they can. Max (Matt Damon) agrees to take on a life-threatening mission, one that could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

With RoboCop, director Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as the title character, Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises) as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) as media mogul Pat Novak. Peter Weller played the character in the original and the 1990 sequel.

‘RoboCop’ Matches His Motorcycle. Fans Will Freak Out.

Filming in Toronto, Canada, there have been more than a couple dozen behind-the-scenes images leaked, most creating negative buzz. While it’s been confirmed that we’ll see “multiple” versions of RoboCop, now played by Joel Kinnaman, fans don’t seem to dig the new “black” look. It gets worse for them today when you see him on set with his black bike. ‘RoboCop’ Director Speaks On Rumors Of Behind-the-Scenes Drama

Latino Review translated an interview over at Cinema en Cena where Jose Padilha, director of the RoboCop remake, responds to allegations made by City of God director Fernando Meirelles that he was having a horrid time with the project.

I have a script I’m happy with and I got the cast I have picked,” said Padilha in a rough translation. “The director of photography is Lula Carvalho, my editor is Daniel Rezende (City of God, Elite Squad, The Tree of Life). I was even consulted for the selection of the producers.

When asked about the rumors of him having a bad time while in pre-production for RoboCop:

We deal with those difficulties with coolness and familiarity.

Padilha obviously wouldn’t publicly slam the studio or producers – not to mention it’s not all that shocking to hear about trouble behind-the-scenes. Directors are (and should be) artists, and making a movie is a collaborative process. butting heads is part of the process, especially when you’re new.

RoboCop is being rebuilt for August 9, 2013.

About All This ‘RoboCop’ Business…

There’s a lot of chatter today regarding some comments director Jose Padilha supposedly made about MGM’s remake of Robocop. Comments (via Screen Crush) that would indicate the film is in some trouble. The only problem is that they’re completely out of context.

Padilha reportedly confided in fellow filmmaker Fernando Meirelles (City Of God) and Meirelles turned around and spoke with South American web site Cinemacom Rapadura. He said, “I talked to José Padilha for a week by phone. He will begin filming Robocop. He is saying that it is the worst experience. For every 10 ideas he has, 9 are cut. Whatever he wants, he has to fight. “This is hell here,” he told me. “The film will be good, but I never suffered so much and do not want to do it again.” He is bitter, but it’s a fighter.

It’s worth mentioning that this quote had to be translated from Portugese into English (something Screen Crush acknowledges). It’s also not from Padilha himself so I think it’s a bit premature for everyone – lots of sites have picked this up and reported it with varying degrees of armchair doomsday rhetoric – to be ringing the death knell here. No one knows what the tone of this conversation was. I have no vested interest in this either way. I’m not even particularly convinced that a remake of RoboCop is a good idea at all. I just don’t think that this kind of interview means anything one way or the other. Also – of course it’s stressful! This is a big budget studio remake, they’re not known as beacons of light for the creative process. Head inside for more… READ MORE

[News Bites] Hugh Laurie Exits ‘RoboCop’, “Hannibal” Casting, IFC Records ‘Berberian Sound Studio’ and ‘The Maze Runner’ Taps Director

Clive Owen (below; Children of Men, Sin City, Shoot ‘Em Up, Intruders) is in talks to replace “House” star Hugh Laurie as the villain in MGM’s reboot of RoboCop, reports Deadline and Variety. He would star alongside Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael Kenneth Williams, Marianne Jean-Baptiste in the Jose Padilha-directed reboot in theaters August 9, 2013. Laurie was to play the evil and ultra-rich CEO of Omnicorp, the company that makes Robocop.

IFC Midnight has acquired all U.S. rights to director Peter Strickland’s psychological horror film Berberian Sound Studio (pictured above), “Set in 1976, pic takes place at one of the cheapest, sleaziest post-production facilities in Italy, where a naive and introverted sound engineer from England is hired to orchestrate the sound mix for the latest film by a horror maestro.” Strickland also wrote the screenplay for the film, which stars Toby Jones, Cosimo Fusco, Antonio Mancino, Fatma Mohamed, Tonia Sotiropolou, and Salvatore Li Causi. Film previously screened at the Locarno Film Festival and Edinburgh Film Festival. It will also be playing at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival and New York Film Festival. Variety reports.

NBC’s “Hannibal” has cast a new member of Laurence Fishburne’s investigative team. According to THR, Hettienne Park (below) has joined the upcoming adaptation of the Thomas Harris books. Park will recur as Beverly Katz, a bright-eyed yet weary crime scene investigator who specializes in working with fibers. She’s part of a team of three who piece evidence together. When she first encounters Will (Hugh Dancy), she confronts the criminal profiler about his unusual role with the FBI and flags the special treatment he receives. While the duo initially clashes, their relationship could potentially become a romantic one. Mads Mikkelsen will play the psychiatrist-turned-serial killer in the 13-episode dramatic take from “Pushing Daisies” creator Bryan Fuller.

20th Century Fox has set Wes Ball (watch a trailer for his short “The Ruin” inside) to direct The Maze Runner, an adaptation of the James Dashner dystopian novel. “‘The Maze Runner’ is a post-apocalyptic setting. The protagonist, Thomas, who after having his memory wiped is deposited in a community of boys trapped in an enormous maze. He soon learns they are part of a mysterious test, and finds it is his destiny to join the ‘maze runners’ and lead them to freedom.” Peter Kang and Daria Cercek are overseeing at the studio. Noah Oppenheim wrote the first draft of the script, says Deadline. READ MORE

Here’s ED-209 From The New ‘RoboCop’!

MGM’s RoboCop is gearing up for production and has launched a new website for OmniCorp, the manufacturer in charge of supplying urban and military weapons. And right there on the front page is a pic of the new ED-209! There’s also some cool video that reminds me of the satirical commercials from the original 1987 film, even if it lacks their humorous bite.

Per OmniCorp, “For a half-century, these words have set the framework upon which OmniCorp has aimed to build a brighter world. We don’t do passive technology. At OmniCorp, our solutions generate a beacon of safety that we shine upon on the dangers of the day. No matter the obstacle – political, cultural, philosophical – we pursue our convictions around the globe to secure peace of mind at home. And when this requires bold new direction, we never allow doubt to shrink our duty. When your quality of life is in the balance, our leadership team will tip the scales. Our products have elevated your lives. Our people have inspired your future. Our passion will always be at your side.

Jose Padilha is directing the remake, which is being produced by Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman. Laurie is joining quite the cast. Joel Kinnaman (“The Killing”) is the title character, a cop named Alex Murphy who is brought back from the brink of death and turned into a cyborg police officer. Gary Oldman will play Norton, the scientist who creates RoboCop and finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of a corporation. Samuel Jackson will play Pat Novak, a charismatic media mogul and a powerful force in the Robocop world. Cornish has been offered the role of his wife who thinks she is a widow Hugh Laurie plays the evil and ultra-rich CEO of Omnicorp, the company that makes RoboCop and ED-209.

Joel Kinnaman Says ‘RoboCop’ Remake Will Be A “New Story Within The Old One”

Robocop41412 Joel Kinnaman Says RoboCop Remake Will Be A New Story Within The Old One

MGM’s RoboCop is accumulating a surprisingly good supporting cast with Gary Oldman (Dracula, The Dark Knight Rises) confirmed for role as “Norton” and Rebecca Hall (The Town) and Gael Garcia Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien) rumored for other parts. But there’s still been a lot of speculation about the tone and plotline of the film, something the new RoboCop himself (Joel Kinnaman) tried to clear up in a recent interview. It sounds like this will have a much different storyline (but a similar tone?).

Speakin to Collider he said, “It can be completely opposite. That’s how you can break new ground by rethinking something that’s already been done. José has a completely different take on this than Verhoeven had, and with all respect, everybody that’s involved in this movie loved the original and we have a lot of respect for it. We’re going to have a lot of throwbacks and there’s going to be a lot of fun stuff for the fans of the first movie. It’s a new story within the old one.
