Finally, Some Good ‘RoboCop’ News! Ed Norton, Sean Penn And Others Circling!

Robocop41412 Finally, Some Good RoboCop News! Ed Norton, Sean Penn And Others Circling!

Jose Padilha’s RoboCop has been the subject of some recent pre-production PR gaffes, such as lead actor Joel Kinnaman telling MTV to expect this Robocop to be “more human” and that “you’re going to see his eyes.” While such changes might prove not to be so misguided in the context of the final film, the general idea of such a daringly classic film being remade in today’s studio environment has many fans of the original concerned. How can they possibly hope to match the original? While we won’t know the answer until we see the film, it’s a nice surprise to hear that there’s actually a pretty great supporting cast being considered.

While no deals have been reported as being finalized – we’re getting word that Edward Norton (Fight Club, The Bourne Legacy), Sean Penn (Mystic River, Milk), Rebecca Hall (The Town) and Gael Garcia Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien) are being considered for roles. Norton, if cast, would actually be playing “Norton” – a key scientist behind the RoboCop program. Bernal would be playing Murphy’s former partner who begins hooking up with Hall (Murphy’s “widow”) after they both think he’s dead. Ouch! Penn is being considered for the role of “Novack”, a highly political right wing reporter.

Norton in particular is known for not being shy when it comes to tussling with studios over the quality of the product, if he is indeed cast hopefully he can be the type of creative heavy that keeps this thing from going totally off the rails.

Strike Entertainment partners Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing. Josh Zetumer wrote the script. Joel Kinnaman is in the lead role originated by Peter Weller. Sony will distribute the MGM film.

RoboCop will be released on August 9th, 2013.

The New, More Human, ‘RoboCop’ Will Look You In The Eye!

The New, More Human, RoboCop Will Look You In The Eye!

I don’t want to be an obnoxious fanboy about this, for all I know it could turn out brilliantly, so I suppose I’ll refrain from judging the impact of this decision until I see the film. But there’s some interesting news concerning Jose Padilha’s remake of RoboCop today. Namely that RoboCop himself will be “more human” and have a visible set of eyes.

Actor Joel Kinnaman told MTV, “‘RoboCop’ is going to be a lot more human. The first movie is one of my favorite movies. I love it. Of course, Verhoeven has that very special tone, and it’s not going to have that tone. It’s a re-imagination of it. There’s a lot of stuff from the original. There are some details and throwbacks, but this version is a much better acting piece… it’s not going to be jaw action. They’re still working on the suit and how it’s going to look, but the visor is going to be see-through. You’re going to see his eyes.

Considering how the plan behind the program in the original RoboCop hinged on the subject not knowing his identity, I’m trying to decide if this throws the concept too far out of whack or not.

Wow, ‘RoboCop’ Has A Release Date! I Guess It’s Actually Happening!

Wow, RoboCop Has A Release Date! I Guess Its Actually Happening!

The Jose Padilha directed remake of RoboCop is fast becoming a reality! The original film about about a cop who was near death and was drafted to become a powerful cyborg cop is so iconic – and so good that part of me just didn’t process that this was happening. Part of me feels that there’s almost no way they can get this right and they should just leave Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 original alone. I don’t often say that – I usually have a pretty open mind about remakes – but I’m concerned.

Stuff we already knew? Strike Entertainment partners Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing. Josh Zetumer wrote the script. Joel Kinnaman has been cast in the lead role originated by Peter Weller. Sony will distribute the MGM film.

The news today is that the film will be released on August 9th, 2013. That’s when we’ll have the new model of RoboCop. Feels weird, doesn’t it? READ MORE

[Review] ‘The Darkest Hour’ Feels Like a Slideshow Of Your Parents’ Summer Tour

darkesthournew121211 [Review] The Darkest Hour Feels Like a Slideshow Of Your Parents Summer Tour

Not screened for critics and slid into a bizarre Sunday release slot, Ryan Daley hit the local cinema to check out Summit Entertainment’s The Darkest Hour, the Chris Gorak-directed alien invasion pic that follows five young people who find themselves stranded in Moscow, fighting to survive in the wake of a devastating alien attack.

While the lush 3D location shots of a desolate Moscow are admittedly stunning, the forgettable characters and paint-by-the-numbers plot threaten to burn the entire film out of your brain mere seconds after you’ve left the theater,” says Daley before joking, “Remove the sporadic alien attacks and ‘The Darkest Hour‘ suddenly feels like a Sunday night slideshow of your parents’ summer tour of the Motherland.”

Revisit a Look at ‘The Darkest Hour’ Aliens

Revisit a Look at The Darkest Hour Aliens

*Originally posted right here on Bloody back in November, other horror sites are speaking as if this was just discovered. So we bumped the story back up top so you can see the aliens again…

Since at the time Summit Entertainment has only released one official image from the film, I decided to revisit the trailer for The Darkest Hour and do a little screen-grabbing. In doing so I stumbled across something they may or may not want you to see.

Within this article you’ll find three grabs from the official trailer that clearly depicts the alien creatures in the Chris Gorak-directed sci-fi horror pic opening on Christmas Day. It looks a little CGI intense, yet I wonder if the FX work was even complete during the cut of this trailer… who knows? Your thoughts below!

Two New Clips For ‘The Darkest Hour 3D’ Don’t Add Much To The Trailer

With a Christmas Day release date looming, Summit Entertainment’s The Darkest Hour (set report part 1, part 2), is doing everything it can to kick things into awareness overdrive.

While I love the cast, I’m just not hyped up about this one yet. These clips straddle the same kind of pleasantly middle of the road territory as the trailer. So even though I wouldn’t mind seeing it, I’m not chomping at the bit just yet.

Aliens Invade for Electricity in Second ‘Darkest Hour’ Trailer, Stupid Billboards Litter City

darkeststills112211 Aliens Invade for Electricity in Second Darkest Hour Trailer, Stupid Billboards Litter City

I’m highly concerned about Summit Entertainment’s The Darkest Hour (set report part 1, part 2), which invades theaters this Christmas. While both the first trailer and the new one embedded inside are pretty impressive, other aspects of the campaign are downright shocking. There are billboards all over the Los Angeles area that exclaim “Survive the Holidays” in giant font, while below it you’ll be lucky to catch the title while driving 25+MPH. Even worse is that the imagery behind the text is absolutely impossible to see. It literally looks like the city is plastered with billboards for a movie called Survive the Holidays. Is it like this across the country?

I’m going to see it because I love Gorak’s Right at Your Door, and am a fan of both Thirlby and Hirsch. But what does the rest of American think? I’d be incredibly concerned if I were Summit. READ MORE
