Today the Los Angeles Film Festival announced it will debut New Line Cinema’s The Conjuring from filmmaker James Wan (Saw, Insidious) at the 2013 Los Angeles Film Festival.
The film, which stars Academy Award nominee Vera Farmiga (Up in the Air, Bates Motel), Patrick Wilson (Insidious), Ron Livingston (Office Space, Adaptation) and Lili Taylor (Hemlock Grove), will screen in two theaters at the Regal Cinema at L.A. LIVE on June 21, first at 10:00 pm in Regal House 11 and 10:30 pm in Regal House 10 with both screenings followed by a Q&A with Wan.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Warner Bros. first poster for The Conjuring – you know, the tree with a noose. It’s relevant and all, but it in no way demands your attention.
This new UK poster, for example, screams for you to look. Not to mention it carries a very James Wan-ish atmosphere (obviously the puppet helps with that).

Every time I see something new from James Wan’s The Conjuring I’m inclined to believe that, aside from the fact that it’s probably really good, it looks like a leap forward for the director himself. It just looks so much more assured than his already impressive existing body of work. I particularly like the leap from on top of the armoir, and any use of “Hurdy Gurdy Man” puts me in the bag a little bit.

It was recently revealed that the filmmakers were aiming for a PG-13 but couldn’t get it because of the intensity of the scares. Not the gore, just the creepiness. So the film will remain at its’ current R rating. Can’t wait. Warner Bros. has just completed its panel at the ongoing WonderCon in Anaheim, CA for The Conjuring, the latest haunter from horror master James Wan (Insidious, Saw, Dead Silence).
According to Twitter reactions, the footage went over gangbusters. But we’ve already seen the astounding trailer, so here’s a bit of news to get the hardcore horror buffs excited.
Wan told the crowd that he shot The Conjuring to be PG-13, but the MPAA said even without gore it was just too scary and it got an R, Yahoo! reports.
Starring Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor, Joey King, Shanley Caswell, Haley McFarland, Mackenzie Foy, Kyla Deaver and Sterling Jerins, Warners believes in their film so much that they’re making it a major summer release opening it on July 19.

I’ve begin to hate haunting/possession movies recently because nothing ever happens in them except a few people bending over backwards. Big deal, lots of people have scoliosis. But director James Wan (Saw, Insidious) The Conjuring (previously The Warren Files) looks like he’s aware of those pitfalls and is sidestepping them without sacrificing character. This teaser focusses almost exclusively on Lili Taylor’s character, so I imagine we’ll be getting that features the whole ensemble soon enough.
In particular I think the blindfold scare at the beginning is particularly well done. It’s a variation on a gag we’ve seen before, for sure, but it’s pulled off with confidence and restraint and as such wrings new scares out of it. I spent some time on the set of this movie last year and look forward to sharing that report with you in the coming months.

A summer date is typically the kiss of death for a horror film, but that’s usually because either a studio executive didn’t know what they were doing, or they just wanted to dump it between the release of a Batman or Transformers franchise. The problem is, summer typically isn’t the time people want to see a genre film. Moviegoers speak with their wallets, and it has been proven time and time again that it doesn’t always work (it should be noted that films like The Others and The Sixth Sense were major hits).
This all leads to the release of James Wan’s The Conjuring, which Warner Bros. Pictures will bow in theaters July 19. Wan has become a master of horror having to major hits, Saw and Insidious, as well as the ever-so-creepy Dead Silence. A new article on Variety indicates that the great summer challenge is a result of the film’s strength. Says the site, the film “will bow during the heart of summer, a result of scary-good test screening results.”
It’s astronomically rare for a studio to even acknowledge that test screenings have taken place since the general public and online goons (that’s me!) treat that as a sign of weakness. They’re celebrating their results, flaunting them right in front of our faces. What does this mean? It means that Warners wants everyone to know that they’re the gustiest studio in the biz, one that’s taking a huge chance on Wan’s Amityville Horror-inspired horror starring Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Lili Taylor, Ron Livingston, Mackenzie Foy, Joey King, Hayley McFarland and Shanley Caswell.
According to the mag, Conjuring has been generating virtually unheard of glowing responses from two test screenings. The move to July — a huge vote of confidence for The Conjuring — was made in direct response to those screenings: The film scored in the low-90% range when averaging the number of auds who rated the film either “excellent” or “very good.” Concerning men under 25, the pic scored even higher, just below 100%.

This isn’t bad news at all, but I think WB is playing a dangerous game releasing a horror film mid-summer. Wan, director of Saw, Dead Silence and Insidious, tells this alternate take on The Amityville Horror that’s inspired by the supernatural events that happened in the Rhode Island home of the Perron family. Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are playing the investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Lilli Taylor and Ron Livingston will portray the Perrons.
It’s also really exciting to hear that the long gestured Prisoners is finally cast up and about to begin shooting. Things are progressing so quickly that Warners has locked in a September 20, 2013 release! Aaron Guzikowski’s dark tale centers on a small-town man who, after his daughter and her friend are kidnapped and the cops fail to solve the crime, takes matters into his own hands, holding hostage the person he suspects committed the crime. He also comes into conflict with the big-city detective assigned to the case. Hugh Jackman, Melissa Leo, Jake Gyllenhaal and Paul Dano are all starring.
