Best-And-Worst-2012

[BEST & WORST '12] Evan Dickson’s List Of The Best Horror Films Of 2012!

This was a weird year. There weren’t that many great “straight up” horror movies out there, at least not in my eyes. I feel like the genre is at a turning point where it’s about to be reinvigorated, I’ve already seen a few of the films coming out next year (ones that simultaneously fit the definitions of the genre while taking it to new places) and I think 2013 will represent a turning point. 2012 saw the genre tentatively figuring out how to spread its wings in the age of huge budget divides (just like the American middle class, medium sized films are on the wane), VOD and a shifting landscape in general.

So don’t be surprised if some of these movies don’t 100% fall under the “horror” category. It’s not like I tossed Cloud Atlas on here or anything, I operated from the films that we cover on the site, but you’ll see what I’m talking about inside. On occasion we cover some great stuff that doesn’t rigidly fit the definitions of the genre, but it’s material that we feel appeals to horror fans’ sensibilities. That being said, I also kept this year’s “best of” list to films that were released in 2012. I still saw plenty of movies that I fell in love with, and here are 10 that you might dig as well. [Interview] Director Don Coscarelli On The Trippy Gore Of ‘John Dies At The End’ And His Plans For ‘Phantasm 5′

Magnet Releasing unleashes John Dies at the End (review), the sci-fi/horror movie from horror icon Don Coscarelli (Phantasm, Bubba Ho-Tep) On-Demand today.

It’s an incredibly trippy, funny and splattery movie. I recently sat down with Coscarelli to talk about the film’s psychedelic influences and discuss how he measured out the gore. For good measure, we touch on Phantasm 4 – and it sounds like that film has a good chance of happening!

In ‘John Dies at the End’, it’s all about the Soy Sauce, a drug that promises an out-of-body experience with each hit. Users drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human. Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. [BEST & WORST '12] David Harley’s List of the Best Horror Films of 2012!

I can’t believe 2012 is almost over. Partly because the year flew by, but mostly because not many films that came out truly left an impression. As horror fans, I think we’re in the same sort of position we were in at the tail-end of all the torture crap; we need a new movement. A new direction. A new something. Anything. We’ve gone through a few trends in the past few years (found footage, ghosts, and vampires to name a few), but nobody is doing anything interesting with them at the moment.

The reason I’m doing all this complaining as a preface for my Best Of list is because this is the first year since I’ve been writing for the site that I haven’t been able to come up with a Top Ten. Either I pulled a Rip Van Winkle and slept through the year or 2012 was a huge bummer. Below are my five favorite horror films of the year, along with a really fun honorable mention that just barely didn’t make it onto the list. READ MORE

[BEST & WORST '12] Top 10 Horror Novels of the Year!

First off, I’m not sure I’m completely comfortable labeling the following novels “the best of 2012”. When compiling a list of top 10 horror films of the year, it’s easy to narrow the selection group down to 50 or so candidates. Not so with horror novels. In the wake of the e-reader, the number of horror fiction titles released each year has swelled into the thousands. And while most of those novels aren’t necessarily good, there are dozens that are. Considering the varying marketing and distribution methods, it’s literally impossible to catch up with all the greatness out there.

But in my defense, I am a voracious reader, and a longtime fan of horror fiction. If anything, let the following 10 entries serve as a list of humble recommendations from a man who has sampled the goods in 2012. I’m certain many of our readers have read more books than I have, and better books than I have. And I’d especially like to thank you guys, the readers who read and discuss the book and comic reviews. Drop your favorite fiction titles of the year in the comments if you get a chance. It’s gift card season and daddy needs a new pair of hardbounds. READ MORE

Don Coscarelli On The Future Of ‘Phantasm 5′!!! “I Have To Find A Way…”

I just got back from the Los Angeles press day for John Dies at the End (review), the sci-fi/horror movie from horror icon Don Coscarelli (Phantasm, Bubba Ho-Tep). It’s a fantastic movie that I really enjoyed, one that Magnet will be releasing On-Demand December 27, 2012 and in theaters February 3, 2013.

So the bulk of my coverage is going to wait until we get closer to those dates. But I just got a tidbit from Coscarelli that I need to share with you. Remember this whole thing? When it was erroneously reported that Phantasm 5 was moving forward and we had to perform the sad task of stepping in to let you know that wasn’t the case? Well, now it sounds like there actually might BE a movie sometime in the future. At the very least, it’s much more likely to happen than it was in June.

Per Coscarelli himself, “There’s been a lot of speculation for a lot of time. When I made ‘Phantasm 4′ I really saw it as an end. And it really was an ending of that portion. But I will tell you that I get so many questions about ‘Phantasm 5′. And no one’s talking about remakes! They want a ‘Phantasm 5′ with the original actors. All of the actors are in great shape, Angus [Scrimm] does an excellent job in ‘John.’ And I used to just dismiss the idea of ‘Phantasm 5′, but now I have to take it a little more seriously. There is a rabid fan base that will not be denied! So once I get done with this publicity thing I have to find a way to satisfy that demand!

Sounds good to me! What do you guys think?

[Book Review] David Wong’s ‘John Dies At The End’ Sequel, ‘This Book Is Full Of Spiders’

Jason Pargin’s first novel, John Dies at the End, was originally published as an online serial. It eventually developed enough of a cult following to evolve into a full-blown book deal, with a hardcover print run and everything. The wacky misadventures of Dave and John––two 20-something slackers facing down a host of otherworldly monsters in their pathetic hometown––caught the attention of esteemed horror director Don Coscarelli (Phansasm, Bubba Ho-Tep), who adapted the novel into a Paul Giamatti-starring film that’s been bouncing around the festival circuit since January. Magnet is planning a VOD release sometime in late December.

It sounds like a dream scenario for any would-be novelist, but Pargin (writing under the pseudonym David Wong) proves he’s no fluke with the hilarious, hallucinatory sequel This Book is Full of Spiders: Seriously, Dude, Don’t Touch It. Dave and John are back, this time attempting to quell a surge of giant parasitic spiders that have infected their undisclosed hometown. Their investigation goes predictably awry, resulting in a full-on zombie oubreak. This Book is Full of Spiders hit American bookstores back on October 2. Read on for the full review. READ MORE
