[TV] John Hurt Joins Guillermo del Toro’s “The Strain”!!

Oscar-nominated actor John Hurt (pictured; V for Vendetta, Alien) has been tapped as the co-lead opposite Corey Stoll and Mia Maestro in FX‘s high-profile drama pilot “The Strain,” from Guillermo del Toro and Carlton Cuse, which is being eyed for a 13-episode pickup. Deadline reports.

The high-concept thriller, directed by Del Toro from a script he co-wrote with Chuck Hogan based on their vampire novel trilogy, tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), the head of the Centers for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism.

Hurt, who first worked with del Toro in his 2004 feature Hellboy, will portray Professor “Abraham Setrakian,” a holocaust survivor who immigrated to the United States after World War II and now runs a pawn shop in Spanish Harlem. As the outbreak spreads, he may be the only one with answers – if anyone will listen.

Kevin Durand, Richard Sammel, Lauren Lee Smith, Jonathan Hyde and Miguel Gomez co-star in the project, from FX Prods.

Here’s Your Passport To Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Snowpiercer’!!

From The Host‘s Bong Joon-ho comes Snowpiercer, a Dimension film we’ve been talking about for quite some time but have seen frustratingly little of. We’ve gotten some concept art, a few stills and some snippets of the score – but it still feels very far off. Now we can add a little bit to the pile – neat promo passports for the cast and crew of the film! They’re pretty cool – but I’m itching for a trailer.

Being sold by the Weinstein Company at the ongoing EFM, the post-apocalyptic thriller stars Captain America‘s Chris Evans, as well as Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, John Hurt, Octavia Spencer, Alison Pill, Song Kang-ho, Ewen Bremner and Kenny Doughty.

[AFM '12] Bong Joon-ho’s ‘Snow Piercer’ Nabbed By The Weinstein Company

Director Bong Joon-ho’s (The Host) Snow Piercer was picked up at AFM by The Weinstein Company, per Deadline. “The Weinstein Company has picked up the English-language rights to the thriller Snow Piercer from South Korea’s CJ Entertainment. Made at this year’s AFM, the deal for the multiple territory acquisition of the future-set film was in the seven figures.

Budgeted at roughly $39.2m (KW45bn), Snow Piercer will be Korea’s most expensive film by far. Kang Je-gyu’s war movie My Way currently holds the record with a $24.5m (KW28bn) budget. The film, based on the graphic novel “Le Transperceneige”, “is set in the not too distant future where a new Ice Age has wiped out most of the human race. With a revolt brewing onboard, the Snow Piercer is a train of Earth’s lone survivors that travels around the cold world.

The film stars Chris Evans (pictured above), John Hurt, Ed Harris, Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, Jamie Bell and Ewen Bremner. Weinstein Company will distribute Snow Piercer in North America, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. A summer 2013 release is “likely.”

[News Bites] ‘Total Recall’ Shootout; Asian Gay Zombie Movie; And ‘Snow Piercer’ Wraps

Screen Daily reports that Bong Joon-ho (The Host) has wrapped shooting what looks to be Korea’s most expensive film to date, Snow Piercer. According to investor/distributor CJ E&M, the shoot wrapped over the weekend in Prague and Bong will finish post-production in Korea. They aim to release the sci-fi thriller next year, although specific dates are still in the works. Budgeted at roughly $39.2m (KW45bn), Snow Piercer will be Korea’s most expensive film by far. Kang Je-gyu’s war movie My Way currently holds the record with a $24.5m (KW28bn) budget. Based on the French graphic novel “Le Transperceneige,” the film is about the microcosm of human society surviving on a train that goes around in a snow-covered, post-apocalyptic world. The film was shot entirely on location in the Czech Republic, except for a day’s shoot in Austria for some scenery. Park Chan-wook is producing with his company Moho Film. Snow Piercer features a multi-national cast with Captain America star Chris Evans in the lead. He is joined by Song Kang-ho, who previously worked with Bong on The Host, John Hurt, Ed Harris, Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, Jamie Bell and Ewen Bremner.

German sales outfit Raspberry & Cream has picked up Asian horror title Remington And The Curse of the Zombadings, a gay zombie film from the Philippines, says THR. Raspberry & Cream will handle world-wide sales on the title, a low-brow comedy about the homophobic Remington who is cast under a spell and becomes gay himself. The film has proved a box office hit on its home turf, earning close to $1 million with 250,000 admissions, making it one of the most successful indie features ever in the Philippines. Director Jade Castro also produced Remington through the Manila-based writer/producer collectives ufo Pictures and Orgin8 Media. Star Mart Escudero won the Golden Screen Award, the Pilipino equivalent of the Oscar, for best actor in a musical or comedy for his performance.

Lastly, below we’ve added a second clip from Len Wiseman’s Total Recall remake, in theaters August 3, that pits Colin Farrell and Jessica Biel in a shootout against Kate Beckinsale and her Imperial troopers (seriously, does it not look like a scene out of Star Wars?) READ MORE

THR writes that Swinton will rejoin her The Limits of Control helmer Jim Jarmusch for the director’s new film, a take on the vampire romance genre titled Only Lovers Left Alive.

Fellow Oscar-winner John Hurt, most lately of Tinker Tailor Solider Spy, Mia Wasikowska of Albert Nobbs and War Horse actor Tom Hiddleston also star in the horror drama, described as an unusual love story between two vampires who have been in love for centuries.

Melancholia (limited/VOD)

On VOD October 7: A so-called apocalypse will be caused by Earth colliding with another planet. Melancholia is described as a beautiful movie about the end of the world, and the story hinges on a large object from outer space approaching Earth that affects the planet’s inhabitants.

Dunst and Gainsbourg play sisters whose lives are drifting apart as the universe spectacularly unravels in what Von Trier describes as a beautiful movie about the end of the world.

Kirsten Dunst Declares the Earth “Evil” in First ‘Melancholia’ Clip

This Earth is evil, we don’t need to grieve for it… nobody will miss it.

The first clip from Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia has found its way online and has proven why we should be covering this “end of the world drama.” The above quote comes out of star Kirsten Dunst’s mouth as she explains her feelings towards the impending end of the world to co-star Charlotte Gainsbourg.

You’ll also find a new red band TV Spot inside.

Magnolia Pictures recently announced a November 4, 2011 release date for Von Trier’s apocalyptic drama also starring Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Alexander Skarsgaard, Stellan Skarsgard, Udo Kier and John Hurt.

While the apocalyptic tale is being pegged as a drama, Von Trier is always extremely cryptic about his features that always seem to delve deep into the dark psyche.

Behold the Apocalypse in Lars Von Trier’s ‘Melancholia’ Trailer!

The end of the world is coming, courtesy of Danish director Lars Von Trier.

The official website was launched for Von Trier’s Melancholia that confirms the plot, an unknown planet hidden behind the sun has come out of hiding and is about to hit the Earth.

Starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, Alexander Skarsgaard, Stellan Skarsgard, Udo Kier, and John Hurt, Magnolia Pictures has already acquired domestic distro rights for the pic described as “A beautiful movie about the end of the world.” With Von Trier, it’s unknown if he’s being ironic, although the footage is nothing short of spectacular.

One criticism: at the end of the footage, it looks more like the planet is passing rather than about to actually hit Earth. Not sure if that’s intentional, but they may want to rework that FX in my opinion….
