David Harley and I don’t see eye-to-eye when it comes to Twentieth Century Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Rupert Wyatt’s prequel to the 1968 masterpiece that spawned multiple sequels. Personally, I thought it was one of the best Fox films in nearly a decade, and was blown away by the extermination of CGI “dead eyes”. This was accomplished by sticking star Andy Serkis in a motion-capture suit and thus using his body language and actual eyes in the finished product.

Fox is rightfully campaigning to land Serkis a best supporting actor nomination for his role as Caesar, an ape with extreme intelligence who falls victim to the prejudices and fears of man. As Hitfix notes, if Serkis finds himself among the five nominees announced a week from Tuesday, it will make history as the first motion-capture performance recognized by the Academy (let alone any major awards organization).

There has been major debate as to whether or not Serkis should be recognized, considering you don’t actually see him on screen. The below video should put the argument to rest, unless of course you can’t stop laughing (it’s super weird and uncomfortable). It displays Serkis sans CGI acting as the lead ape. I haven’t been this excited for a movie in a long time, and many reviewers on Twitter are absolutely raving about Rupert Wyatt’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the first franchise entry since Tim Burton’s 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes. Unfortunately, Bloody’s David Harley is putting the kibosh on my anticipation with a mixed review that basically calls the film “boring”.

“Some fun nods to past series’ entries aside, ‘Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes‘ is a movie that uses technology instead of telling a story. The original is part of Fox’s legacy of timeless films – co-written by the master of the twist ending, Rod Serling – and they already screwed up once with Tim Burton’s gorgeous but completely forgettable remake, so it’s unfortunate that the reboot makes the same mistake. The ‘Outbreak‘ meets ‘Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes‘ plot moves along at a at a snail’s pace when there aren’t a ton of monkeys running around breaking stuff.”

Keeping with the frenzied hype of Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Twentieth Century Fox has released yet another clip out of the San Diego Comic-Con that rattles star Tom Felton when he gets too close to the monkey cage.

Rupert Wyatt’s prequel arriving in theaters August 5 is described as an origin story, and is “set in present day San Francisco and deals with the aftermath of man’s experiments with genetic engineering that lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.” James Franco will play a driven scientist who becomes a crucial figure in the war between humans and apes.

If you’re not buying comics or meetings artists and writers I’m begging to know what the point is of going to the San Diego Comic-Con. Everything on display is now online, and studios have even dropped the panel sizzle reels just hours after premiering at the Con. What a jip.

Fox has unloaded their sizzle reel for Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Rupert Wyatt’s prequel arriving in theaters August 5. I guess the point of dumping it online is because the film arrives in theaters in just a few weeks — but still, why can’t exclusive Comic-Con footage stay special?

A second clip has been released from Twentieth Century Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes where the chimp Caesar conducts a prison break. The film will be featured at this week’s San Diego Comic-Con.

After that Tim Burton catastrophy, I’m welcoming Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes with open arms. The only thing that worries me is that every time I see the trailer at the theatre, everyone busts out laughing once the motion-capture ape pops up. I don’t know if that means the only people taking this flick seriously is the online community or if people still feel stung by Marky Mark; personally, I’m a little disappointed that Delroy Lindo won’t be screaming about sesame cakes in another killer ape flick.

Today, a new UK quad and a few TV spots were released for the film, which will get its stateside release on August 5. Check after the break for the spots, entitled Exceeds, One Subject and Miracle.

Update: Proving my point more:

While most sites were bashing the living hell out of Twentieth Century Fox’s first teaser for Rise of the Planet of the Apes, we here at Bloody Disgusting have been marveling at WETA’s special effects work that appears to have put an end to the “dead eyes” debate. With the release just a month away (Aug. 5), other mainstream sites are finally changing their tune, especially this past week when I saw multiple haters start using the word “Oscar” — shocking, I know. Fox must have taken note of the sudden change in heart as they quickly unloaded a THIRD trailer loaded with more sequences and special effects work. All hail Caesar!

Twentieth Century Fox has launched of viral video campaign with conjunction to their forthcoming Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which opens August 5. The first video can be enjoyed below with more over at the official YouTube Channel. The footage is pretty rad as it shows what happens when a group of soldiers give a little money an AK-47. Even more disturbing are the comments that imply some of the viewers believe it to be real (even on Fox’s own YouTube channel).

Twentieth Century Fox is continuing their anti-human campaign for Rise of the Planet of the Apes with a trio of videos that proves, without a shadow of a doubt, that apes are mentally superior to humans — at least when it comes to combat. It’s a nice little prelude to what’s in store when Rupert Wyatt’s prequel arrives in theaters August 5.

Leading up to the films August 5 release I expect to have a pretty heavy debate in regards to Twentieth Century Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the Rupert Wyatt-directed prequel to Tim Burton’s remake that stars James Franco, John Lithgow, Freida Pinto, Andy Serkis, Brian Cox, and Tom Felton.

I’ve seen some serious online hate in regards to the trailers released (watch the second one inside), yet I think everything put on display looks absolutely incredible. Typically I’d be skeptical – Fox has punked us hundreds of times over the past decade – but X-Men: First Class has given me a sense of rejuvenated hope.

Adding more fuel to the pro-column are the newly release images that show just how far our CGI has come. Oscar-winning visual effects house WETA Digital will render, for the first time ever in the film series, photo-realistic apes rather than costumed actors. Take a good look at the below image of Caesar (hi-res available in image gallery) and gaze into his eyes; it appears to me that we’ve passed the “dead eyes” epidemic of the ’90s and ’00s. No? I’m out-of-my-mind impressed.

“An origin story in the true sense of the word, ‘Rise’ is set in present day San Francisco. The film is a reality-based cautionary tale — a science fiction/science-fact blend where mankind’s hubris leads to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.”
