[Interview] Shanley Caswell Talks ‘Detention’, The ADD Generation And ‘The Warren Files’

Joseph Kahn’s Detention opens today (April 13th) and while this is one of those movies where the star is sort of the film itself, it would be unwise to overlook the work Shanley Caswell does in the lead role of Riley Jones. The movie is many things. It’s a slasher, a comedy, a romance, and a time travel adventure. But, most significantly, it presents a bracing picture of the speed at which Generation Y lives their lives. Caswell is tasked with providing the audience an access point into a world they’re not familiar with, and she more than pulls it off.

Co-scripted by Kahn and Mark Palermo “‘Detention’ tells the story of the senior class at Grizzly Lake high school. The road to graduation is never an easy one, but it’s further complicated for these students by the arrival of a slasher movie killer who has seemingly come to life. The only ones who can stop the killer are a handful of students, but they’ll have to cut out of detention if they’re to stand a chance at saving the world.

I recently hopped on the phone with Caswell to talk about her work in the film and what it’s like trying to ground a movie for the ADD generation. I also tried to pry a little bit out of her in regard to James Wan’s latest, The Warren Files, but she was wisely tight-lipped. Head inside for the interview. READ MORE

[Interview] Director Joseph Kahn On Today’s Teens And His Insane New Slasher, ‘Detention’

Detention is such an idiosyncratic accomplishment I’m not even sure where to start. I’ve seen it twice now and, while I was initially put off by what I perceived to be a sense of self-satisfaction emanating from the film, I quickly fell in love with it. Yes, it’s a slasher movie, but it’s also a million other things. Perhaps its most singular achievement is that it so accurately captures the current high school experience and the rate at which the youth generation absorbs and processes information. It’s an empowering acknowledgement of that generation that will regardless become many parents’ worst nightmare.

Co-scripted by Kahn and Mark Palermo “Detention’ tells the story of the senior class at Grizzly Lake high school. While director Joseph Kahn (Torque) is best known for music videos, he put a lot of his own money into the film. So even though it has plenty of blood, guts, sex, violence and time travel (yep) – it also has a beating heart. Josh Hutcherson, Shanley Caswell, Spencer Locke and Dane Cook (don’t worry, this isn’t a “Dane Cook movie”) all star. Detention opens in select theaters tomorrow, April 13th.

In the film a downtrodden 17-year-old girl is sent to detention where she must survive a slasher film killer and save the world in time for prom.

New ‘Detention’ Poster Cancels Your Future!

Detentionland32512 New Detention Poster Cancels Your Future!

I’m already dying to see Joseph Khan’s Detention so I don’t really need this poster to sell me on the film. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a cool poster.

The film “tells the story of the senior class at Grizzly Lake high school. The road to graduation is never an easy one, but it’s further complicated for these students by the arrival of a slasher movie killer who has seemingly come to life. The only ones who can stop the killer are a handful of students, but they’ll have to cut out of detention if they’re to stand a chance at saving the world.

Opening in theaters April 13 from Samuel Goldwyn Films, David Harley says Detention is “mesmerizing and something you definitely won’t be able to take yours eyes off of.” Be sure to check your local listings since the film will be playing in limited release.

The Hunger Games

The Scholastic book, the first of a trilogy, has a “Battle Royale” meets “Running Man” feel to it, tackling contemporary culture by telling the story of an America where the subjugated districts must pay tribute in the form of a boy and a girl who are forced to participate in a televised battle to the death.

Alternate: The pic is set in post-apocalyptic America, Hunger Games introduces 16-year-old heroine Katniss Everdeen, who must participate in a fight-to-the-death annual event called the Hunger Games. The battles are televised, and pit youths from each of the Capitol’s 12 Districts against each other.

[BD Review] ‘The Hunger Games’ Is Pretty D*mn Good!

[BD Review] The Hunger Games Is Pretty D*mn Good!

Lionsgate’s Gary Ross-directed adaptation of The Hunger Games hits theaters on March 23rd and the film is poised to be a massive hit. However, unlike many out of the box hits based on popular source material – this movie is actually pretty good! I’m actually kind of excited that there’s going to be a movie that makes hundreds of millions of dollars that actually has some respect for its audience.

Ultimately ‘The Hunger Games’ is almost a minor miracle. What could have been a quick and easy cash-in on an existing property is instead a carefully considered, thrilling and touching piece of populist entertainment. It’s sort of an exciting prospect that, for the first time in a long time, we’re going to have a pop culture “moment” centered around a film that actually made the effort to tell its story well (even though it’s a shame that this is now the exception to the rule).

In theaters March 23 from director Gary Ross, the film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Dayo Okeniyi, Amandla Stenberg, Chris Mark, Jacqueline Emerson, Wes Bentley, Lenny Kravitz, Toby Jones, and Stanley Tucci.

New Clip From ‘The Hunger Games’ Divulges A Crush

New Clip From The Hunger Games Divulges A Crush

A new clip has premiered from Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games, the Gary Ross-directed adaptation in theaters March 23. This one features Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) disclosing an uncomfortable truth to Caesar (Stanley Tucci).

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss (Lawrence) is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.READ MORE

First The Hunger Games Clip Completely Ignored

We’ve been keeping our coverage of Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games to an absolute minimum until we know exactly what kind of movie it is. I’m getting the feeling this will be more “teen” than the original promise of Battle Royale meets Running Man. Still, it looks kind of cool.

In theaters March 23 from director Gary Ross, we’ve landed the first official clip that displays Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) showing off her bow and arrow skills, only she’s being completely ignored.

A new one sheet for The Hunger Games has hit the web and it zeroes in on the character of Katniss. This being opposed to the former poster’s emphasis on the spectacle of the games which, were I in this film’s target audience, would be the main point of appeal for me.

In theaters March 23 from director Gary Ross, the film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Dayo Okeniyi, Amandla Stenberg, Chris Mark, Jacqueline Emerson, Wes Bentley, Lenny Kravitz, Toby Jones, and Stanley Tucci.

Jennifer Lawrence Receives an Escort to ‘The Hunger Games’

Jennifer Lawrence Receives an Escort to The Hunger Games

While some of the early looks made me slightly uncomfortable (it still bothers me that the elite people dress like clowns), below you’ll find a cool new image from The Hunger Games that feels a bit inspired by A Clockwork Orange. It depicts Jennifer Lawrence being escorted to training. Directed by Gary Ross, the entire trailer (also inside) looks like a mish-mash of other people’s concepts and ideas. I’m not sure how much of that comes out of the book…

Originally described as Running Man meets Battle Royale, the movie also mixes in heavy tones from Shirley Jackson’s 1948 short “The Lottery”.

Elizabeth Banks Plays an Elite Clown in ‘Hunger Games’

bankshunger111611 Elizabeth Banks Plays an Elite Clown in Hunger Games

Do you think when Elizabeth Banks signed up for The Hunger Games she knew she’d be unrecognizable? After watched the quasi-impressive trailer premiere the other day, I literally had no idea Banks played a clown (named “Effie Trinket”) with a microphone. Truth be told, the costume and make-up design of the “elite” class in this dystopian tale is exactly what’s wrong with it. As I sniped the other day, it looks like director Gary Ross is pushing into Joel Schumacher Batman territory. I’m highly concerned.

Lionsgate’s Dystopian ‘The Hunger Games’ Inspired by Terrifying Short ‘The Lottery’

Lionsgates Dystopian The Hunger Games Inspired by Terrifying Short The Lottery

I’ve never read the books, but I do recall the initial pitch when Lionsgate acquired the rights some time ago. It was The Running Man meets Battle Royale. They’ve since abandoned the comparison, but the newly released trailer does everything but ignore that it’s a complete riff of the aforementioned films.

Lionsgate has finally unveiled the first full trailer for The Hunger Games, which is solely footage from the first half of the adaptation. It displays Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) in a Dystopian future chosen for a yearly battle to the death. Only one can survive. The selection process is right out of Shirley Jackson’s 1948 short “The Lottery”, while the games themselves look like a reboot of Battle Royale. My main complaint, other than the Braveheart-esque score, is Director Gary Ross’ vision of the future. If there were a fine line to cross, he’s pushing into Joel Schumacher Batman territory.

More from the world of big studio franchises, Donald Sutherland has been cast as President Snow in the highly anticipated adaptation of the Suzanne Collin’s bestseller, The Hunger Games.

Lenny Kravitz Rounds Out Battle of ‘The Hunger Games’

Lionsgate announced today that iconic musician and actor Lenny Kravitz (Precious) has been cast in the role of “Cinna” in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel The Hunger Games.

Cinna is Katniss Everdeen’s assigned fashion stylist for the highly ceremonial lead up to The 74th Annual Hunger Games. Though he’s a mild mannered first time stylist, the designs he creates, such as the “Girl On Fire” costume for the tributes’ live televised debut, are show-stopping. With odds being set, wagers being placed, and wealthy benefactors able to occasionally intervene in the games, a high public profile is tantamount to a huge advantage for any contestant entering the arena. The stunning and unique designs Cinna creates for Katniss define her public identity, and in an all too real way, could also contribute to her very survival.

Deadline also adds that Toby Jones is playing the host/narrator of the games alongside Stanley Tucci. The Lionsgate film is set for March 23, 2012 release. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth topline.

Mr. Eyebrows, Wes Bentley, Lands Role in ‘The Hunger Games’

I’m finding it incredibly hard keeping up with the casting of Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games, which is why I’ve opted to only report on “big name” additions.

This morning Lionsgate announced that P2, Ghost Rider and American Beauty star Wes Bentley has landed the role of “Seneca Crane” in the much anticipated Gary Ross-directed adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel originally described as Battle Royale meets Running Man (before turning into a Twilight-esque film).

Bentley joins a cast of talented young actors – Jennifer Lawrence as series heroine Katniss Everdeen with Willow Shields as little sister Primrose, and Josh Hutcherson, who was cast as Peeta Mellark, with Liam Hemsworth in the role of Gale Hawthorne. Paula Malcomson will be playing Katniss and Primrose’s mother. It was also announced that Elizabeth Banks has signed on for the part of Katniss’ pre-games handler Effie Trinket.
