‘Pacific Rim’ Images Need Less Talk, More Do

Warner Bros. has released a yet another still from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim… but again, don’t expect to see any robots or monsters in it. While the trailer does tease one of the giant creatures, we could use more action-packed imagery, instead of pics of people standing around talking. Yawn.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

The battle begins on July 12, 2013. READ MORE

And, courtesy of Wired, we also have a blueprint of one of the human-piloted Jaeger robots (this particular design is for the Gipsy Danger mecha).

Theatrical Trailer, Poster For ‘West of Memphis’ Doc

A new documentary written and directed by Academy Award nominated filmmaker Amy Berg (DELIVER US FROM EVIL) and produced by first-time filmmakers Damien Echols and Lorri Davis, in collaboration with the multiple Academy Award winning team of Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, WEST OF MEMPHIS tells the untold story behind an extraordinary and desperate fight to bring the truth to light: a fight to stop the State of Arkansas from killing an innocent man.

Starting with a searing examination of the police investigation into the 1993 murders of three eight-year-old boys in the small town of West Memphis, Arkansas, the film goes on to uncover new evidence surrounding the arrest and conviction of the other three victims of this shocking crime–Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley. All three were teenagers when they became the target of the police investigation; all three went on to lose 18 years of their lives–imprisoned for crimes they did not commit.

In theaters December 25 from Sony Pictures Classic, head inside for the film’s first official trailer. READ MORE

[NYCC '12] New ‘Pacific Rim’ Posters Asks You To Join The War!

Just in time for the New York Comic-Con, Warner Bros. has released a new poster for Guillermo del Toro’s epic sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim, which will be converted into 3D for its July 12, 2013 release.

The film is set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace. Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Robert Kazinsky, Ron Perlman, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff and Brad William Henke all star.

Guillermo Del Toro Post-Converting ‘Pacific Rim’ To 3D, What Do You Think?

Guillermo del Toro’s epic sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim will be converted into 3D, per Variety. The film is “Set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.” Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Robert Kazinsky, Ron Perlman, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff and Brad William Henke all star.

What’s interesting about this article is that even GDT doesn’t seem to think this is a good idea. It’s an unusually strongly worded piece from a trade publication, they don’t normally throw around words like “strong-armed”. But here they do! “Warner Bros. has strong-armed Guillermo del Toro to convert ‘Pacific Rim’ to 3D. The alien invasion pic has all the ingredients for a 3D tentpole — giant robots vs. aliens in a planet-wide battle to save humanity. But at Comic-Con in July, del Toro said he was resistant to converting the film to 3D because of the scale and size of the pic’s creatures. The director has never released a 3D pic. In the end, the prospect of the 3D upcharge — especially overseas — was likely too much for Warners to resist.

Pacific Rim opens on July 12, 2013. Which version will you be seeing? I’m kind of bummed. 2D screens – the director’s choice – will probably be a limited option. READ MORE

Go Behind-the-Scenes Of Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’

New new issue of Empire Magazine in the UK has four new looks at Guillermo del Toro’s epic sci-fi adventure Pacific Rim, which is “Set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.” A SuperheroHype member scans the stills.

Charlie Hunnam, Charlie Day, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Robert Kazinsky, Ron Perlman, Max Martini, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff and Brad William Henke all star.

Del Toro recently stated that the battles in the film will take place everywhere, “We take the battles far and above! Two or three of them happen in places where there have never been a battle between kaiju and robots. From the bottom of the ocean to the atmosphere of the Earth. We have a battle in a storm at sea. Every battle we try to do differently. One is seen from the point of view of a single person. We never cut away from that point of view.

[San Diego Comic-Con '12] ‘Pacific Rim’ Footage Description

Today we are ending the apocalypse” -Idris Elba in Pacific Rim.

Before the Godzilla trailer stomped Comic-Con attendees, Hall H was treated to the first ever footage from Guillermo del Toro’s giant monster movie, one that pits giant robots against the alien creatures. Here’s the footage description along with some factoids from the panel.

The trailer opened with a couple of older fellows with a metal detector walking in the snow. Said detector starts going crazy and they look up and there is a giant robot missing an arm. The words “To fight monsters/ We made monsters” flash across the screen.

All the while showing HUGE Kaiju like monsters destroying bridges, being shot at by jets, and then a giant robot (piloted by two pilots brain linked to each other controlling either the left or right hemisphere of the body). Robots punch monsters. Straight up wrestling moves. Think a live fight between Jet Jaguar and Chtulhu.

Q&A factoids:

  • There will be rocket punches. F-cking rocket punches.
  • There will be 9 different kaiju monsters, each with unique abilities.
  • Ron Perlman and Charlie Day are playing scientist type characters.
  • The CGI and sound is incredible. Cinematography is colorful and insane!
  • No motion capture. Del Toro made sure all the robots and monsters were key framed.

    Pillow of Death

This lesser “Inner Sanctum” entry stars Lon Chaney Jr. as unhappily married lawyer Wayne Fletcher. In love with his secretary Donna Kincaid (Brenda Joyce), Fletcher is the principal suspect when his wife is found smothered to death in her own bed. Lack of evidence allows Fletcher to walk scot-free, whereupon a series of “pillow murders” commences, all of the victims somehow linked with either Fletcher or Donna. The pseudo-psychological finale wants to have its cake and eat it too, permitting Fletcher to be both innocent and guilty. Among the murder victims is Clara Blandick, who under happier circumstances played Auntie Em in The Wizard of Oz (1939). Tradeshown at 65 minutes, release prints of Pillow of Death run a few minutes short of an hour.

    Weird Woman

The second of Universal’s “Inner Sanctum” thrillers, Weird Woman stars Lon Chaney Jr. as Norman Reed, a college professor worried about the sanity of his new bride, Paula (Anne Gwynne), who was raised in Hawaii with all manners of superstitions, including voodoo. Jealous of Paula, Norman’s former girlfriend, librarian Ilona Carr (Evelyn Ankers), does what she can to ruin the marriage, including suggesting to fellow professor Millard Sawtelle (Ralph Morgan) that Norman is about to expose him as a fraud, and helping moonstruck college girl Margaret Mercer (Lois Collier) obtain a job as Norman’s assistant. Margaret’s advances quickly become grating to Norman, who summarily throws the girl out of his office, and Sawtelle commits suicide rather than face disgrace. Mrs. Sawtelle (Elizabeth Russell) blames her husband’s death on Paula’s supposed witchcraft and Margaret’s boyfriend, David (Phil Brown), physically attacks Norman. The boy is killed in the ensuing struggle and Norman begins to question his own sanity. Until, that is, he finally puts two and two together and sets a trap for Ilona. Based on the 1943 novel Conjure Wife by Fritz Leiber Jr., Weird Woman was remade twice, as Burn, Witch, Burn (1962) starring Janet Blair and Witches’ Brew starring Lana Turner.
