‘Sinister’ Pulled From More Than 40 French Theaters Because…

It was reported via French press late last week that more than 40 French theaters had pulled the theatrical release of Scott Derrickson’s Sinister. Why? Distributor Wild Bunch blames Paranormal Activity 4 (also produced by Blumhouse) and more than a handful of despicable, disrespectful, ignorant and disgusting theatergoers.

Here’s a translation (and slight edit) of what Wild Bunch had to say via Facebook: “Some rooms last weekend have experienced some problems with the spectators Panamornal Activity 4 – confectionery counters looted, cashiers insulted, urinating on the seats, etc. – thus, more than 40 confirmed theaters have simply canceled their programming of Sinister this week.

They continue: “The exploitation of films called ‘gender’ is not easy in France, so we ask our future spectators please be respectful of the rules of courtesy and for those interested, do not hesitate to ask their cinema film schedule next week.

Sinister, starring Ethan Hawke, James Ranson and Juliet Rylance, begins when found footage helps a true-crime novelist realize how and why a family was murdered in his new home, though his discoveries put his entire family in the path of a supernatural entity.

Summit just released a new clip from the upcoming Sinister. I’m not saying don’t see the movie. Go see the movie! I’m just saying don’t watch this clip! I’m starting to worry that they’ve shared too much.

Update: A new viral has gone online at this link. “Channel 4 Breaking News: As town police officers raced to the home Monday morning they had no idea of the horrors that lay ahead.” Read about the murders at the aforementioned link.

Ethan Hawke, James Ranson and Juliet Rylance all star in this horror flick from Exorcism of Emily Rose director Scott Derrickson. Here’s Brad’s mixed review. I liked it more. Head inside to find the footage – if you dare.

[Interview] Director Scott Derrickson On Creating The Unsettling Moments Of ‘Sinister’

Sinister hits theaters on October 12th. Ethan Hawke, James Ranson and Juliet Rylance all star in this super creepy film from Exorcism of Emily Rose director Scott Derrickson.

In the film, Ethan Hawk plays Ellison, a true crime novelist whose glory days are behind him (one hit and two flops in ten years). His past successes enable and embolden his pursuit of future triumphs, while his current failures have eroded his finances and the strength of his family unit. Not to mention the fact that he’s just moved them into a very recent crime scene.

While Brad’s review was mixed, I found a lot to like in the film. To that end, I hopped on the phone with Derrickson a few weeks back to discuss his approach to creating what will soon be known as the film’s signature moments. We also discussed the motivations that keep Hawke’s character in the house (and we touch upon Sinister‘s sly reference to a certain 1988 Dennis Quaid movie – though you’ll have to figure out what that moment is for yourself).

Head inside to check it out! READ MORE

Three New Teasers For ‘Sinister’ Fuzz It Up A Bit

Summit just released three teasers from the upcoming Sinister and they’re actually kind of like the “American Horror Story” teasers in that the footage they show is heavily manipulated and not how it appears in the final product. Go see the movie, though I’m starting to worry that they’ve shared too much. You might want to skip these.

[BD Review] Evan Thinks ‘Sinister’ Delivers On Its Promise

Summit’s Sinister plays Fantastic Fest this weekend (a few weeks ahead of its official release date on October 12th). While my review was heavily mixed on the film (favorable by a hair), Evan Dickson found a lot more to like.

As Ellison makes his way through the tapes, accompanied by copious amounts of whiskey, it’s hard not to be impressed. These images are never less than unsettling and occasionally they’re downright horrific. This is the real coup of the film. Derrickson has touched upon something truly indelible in the construction of these moments. They’re not gory, but they’re unflinching. He lets you see more than most filmmakers do, yet still knows when to pull back at the exact right time required to maximize the intended impact.

A Lot Of ‘Sinister’ Scares In New TV Spot

I’m super perplexed by the marketing campaign for Summit’s Sinister, but not because it’s bad. The imagery released definitely catches the eye, and I’m sure has many of you excited. I saw the movie this past March at the SXSW Film Festival blind, and what was scary about the movie is being shown in all of these trailers and TV Spots. It’s just kind of a bummer that some of the film’s “power” is being taken away in order to sell the product. Anyways, check out the new Spot with lots of Mr. Boogie.
