[BD Review] ‘Magic Magic’ For The Half-Crazy Horror Junkie!

As the lead actress in Magic Magic, Juno Temple brings the same wet-eyed vulnerability she displayed as the trailer trash daughter in the recent, excellent Killer Joe. This 2013 Sundance entry from Sebastian Silva––about a young woman experiencing a schizophrenic episode while on a Brazilian vacation with strangers––is anchored by Temple’s increasingly paranoid, ultimately heartbreaking performance. Magic Magic may not be a horror movie in the conventional sense, but as a vivid depiction of the downward spiral of mental illness, it’s unrelentingly scary.

After weeks of international travel, Temple makes a stop in South America to accompany cousin Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) on a vacation with some friends. When Browning unexpectedly returns to town due to some mysterious obligations, Temple is forced to road-trip with the strangers alone to a secluded cabin in the woods, where she’s subjected to the passive-aggressive flirtations of a vaguely creepy Michael Cera.

Without her cousin to offer moral support, Temple begins to suspect that the gang is deliberately mocking her, and her behavior grows even more erratic as the days progress. Using clever sound design and repeated visual motifs, Silva’s feature has a way of simulating mental illness in both the best and worst possible ways. As Temple’s character slowly comes apart, so does the audience. Yes, at times Magic Magic seems intent on driving viewers mildly insane, but that’s the the entire point. Silva wants to put you there.

It can be awfully hard to convey craziness in a movie without coming across as trite or manipulative, but Magic Magic is admirably sincere it its approach. Ranking alongside similarly horrific depictions of mental breakdown like Repulsion, The Tenant, and Let’s Scare Jessica to Death, Silva’s passion piece is visceral, thoughtful, and terrific. Strongly recommended for the half-crazy horror junkie.

[Sundance '13 Review] Ryan Daley Recommends ‘Magic Magic’ For The Half-Crazy Horror Junkie!

After changing titles multiple times, Sony Pictures took Sebastian Silva’s thriller to the Sundance Film Festival as Magic Magic. The pic received quite a bit of buzz, having starred Michael Cera, Juno Temple, Emily Browning and Catalina Sandino Moreno. It takes place in remote Chile, where a vacationing young woman begins to mentally unravel; meanwhile, her friends ignore her claim until it’s too late.

Ryan Daley caught the film’s world premiere, and says it’s “strongly recommended for the half-crazy horror junkie,” adding, “Ranking alongside similarly horrific depictions of mental breakdown like Repulsion, The Tenant, and Let’s Scare Jessica to Death, Silva’s passion piece is visceral, thoughtful, and terrific.

Daniel Radcliffe Woke Up Shocked At His Bizarre ‘Horns’ Role

MTV hit up Harry Potter‘s Daniel Radcliffe at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival where they got him to speak briefly on his role in Alexandre Aja’s Horns, as well as his interest in Max Landis’ script for a Frankenstein film.

A few weeks after we finished, I woke up one morning thinking, ‘What was that? What was that film I just did?’ It’s so crazy,” Radcliffe said of working on Horns, where he plays a man who awakens one morning to find horns starting to grow from his own head and soon realizes their power drives people to confess their sins and give in to their impulses. “I feel like I have less concept of what it’s going to be now than when I first started, which is bizarre, but it’s very exciting.

Speaking on the bizarre aspects of the film, “I got to have burn make-up on, and then I got to come out of the Pacific Ocean after having been burned alive and drowned — and I survived that because I’m a boss.

He also confirmed that he’s interest in working on Chronicle scribe Max Landis’ Frankenstein project, which would cast him in a hunchbacked, Igor-type role. “I love that script… but to say it’s in any way an adaptation of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” is probably [not accurate]. It’s a Max Landis script so anyone familiar with his work [will] have some sense of what that means.

Horns is currently in post production. READ MORE

Check Out ‘Killer Joe’ For Free In Orlando

I’ve heard nothing but glowing things about William Friedkin’s Killer Joe, making it one of the only films I’m even interested in for the rest of 2012. I’m rarely disappointed with Friedkin’s work – I even have a quasi-soft spot for The Guardian, which is an entertaining mess in parts – and the fact that he’s working from script by Tracy Letts (based on his own play) makes me even more jazzed to see it.

If you live in Orlando and share my enthusiasm, you’re in luck. Bloody-Disgusting has a few GOFOBO codes for an early screening of the film at Regal Winter Park on Wednesday, August 22nd at 7:30 pm. To snag a pass, all you have to do is log into your account on GOFOBO (or sign up if you haven’t) and enter the following code: BLOODZ9YF. That’s it!

Make sure to check out some great interviews for the film conducted by our very own Evan Dickson here, here, and here.

When 22-year-old Chris (Emile Hirsch) finds himself in debt to a drug lord, he hires a hit man to dispatch his mother, whose $50,000 life insurance policy benefits his sister Dottie (Juno Temple). Chris finds Joe Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a creepy, crazy Dallas cop who moonlights as a contract killer. When Chris can’t pay Joe upfront, Joe sets his sight on Dottie as collateral for the job. The contract killer and his hostage develop an unusual bond. Like from a modern-day, twisted fairy tale, “Killer Joe” Cooper becomes the prince to Dottie’s Cinderella.” The film also stars Matthew McConaughey, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church and Gina Gershon.

[BD Interview] ‘The Exorcist’ Director William Friedkin On Avoiding Formula, And The Studios, In His New Movie ‘Killer Joe’

In theaters today from LD Entertainment is Killer Joe, an insanely fun and disturbing movie directed by the man behind The French Connection, The Exorcist, Sorcerer, To Live And Die In LA and BugWilliam Friedkin. The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church and Gina Gershon and is based on a play by Pulitzer and Tony Award winner Tracy Letts.

I recently spoke with Friedkin about crafting Joe, his sixteenth film, and his decision to make it outside of the studio system. We also talk about the film business in general and which of today’s filmmakers he finds inspiring. Oh, and he also weighs in on the futility of even comparing movies like Citizen Kane and Vertigo. It’s a long interview (we even talk Near Dark) but, when you get a chance to speak to someone with this kind of body of work, you want to go for the big picture.

LD Entertainment will soon release Killer Joe, which is directed by the man behind The Exorcist and To Live And Die In LA – William Friedkin. We talk about working with Friedkin and what – if anything – gave them pause about tackling the intense NC-17 movie.

[Video Interview] Emile Hirsch On Working With William Friedkin And What Scene Scared Him Most In ‘Killer Joe’

LD Entertainment will soon release Killer Joe, which is directed by the man behind The Exorcist and To Live And Die In LA – William Friedkin. This may not sound like a horror film to you – but it is indeed bloody and disgusting. It’s also very entertaining. One of the ways in which the film is at its pitch black (and hilarious) best is when it’s detailing the increasingly giant clusterf*ck Emile Hirsch’s Chris Smith digs himself into. He’s in trouble from frame one and can’t keep from sinking deeper.

I recently spoke with Hirsch about what it was like to inhabit a character whose physicality kept changing with every beating he received. We also talked about what it was like to work with William Friedkin and which material in the script freaked him out the most.
