[Interview] Transcript From Our Twitter Interview With ‘Killer Joe’ And ‘The Exorcist’ Director William Friedkin

On July 27th, LD Films will release Killer Joe, which is directed by the man behind The Exorcist and To Live And Fie In LA – William Friedkin. This may not sound like a horror film to you – but it is indeed bloody and disgusting. It’s also very entertaining. I can see why some people might have issues with it – it’s an absolutely bonkers movie. But it’s intense and unsettling and bold. It weirded me out more than Human Centipede and was much more fun to watch. A pulpy ride with huge performances all around, and an interesting character study from Juno Temple.

Last week I interviewed Friedkin live on Twitter and we discussed Killer Joe in as much depth as I think you can in that format. We also talked about The Exorcist and found out that the legendary director is sort of a found footage fan – he cites Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity as his favorite recent horror movies.

When 22-year-old Chris (Emile Hirsch) finds himself in debt to a drug lord, he hires a hit man to dispatch his mother, whose $50,000 life insurance policy benefits his sister Dottie (Juno Temple). Chris finds Joe Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a creepy, crazy Dallas cop who moonlights as a contract killer. When Chris can’t pay Joe upfront, Joe sets his sight on Dottie as collateral for the job. The contract killer and his hostage develop an unusual bond. Like from a modern-day, twisted fairy tale, “Killer Joe” Cooper becomes the prince to Dottie’s Cinderella.

The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church and Gina Gershon. It’s based on the play by Pulitzer and Tony Award winner Tracy Letts. Head inside for the transcript. READ MORE

Check Out This Trailer For ‘Killer Joe’ And Watch Our Live Interview With Director William Friedkin On Friday

On July 27th, LD Films will release Killer Joe. This is remarkable for two reasons. 1. The film was directed by William Friedkin, who gave us such classics as The Exorcist and To Live And Die In LA (btw, if you haven’t seen that movie, do it. Bloody and suspenseful). 2. They’re releasing it with its original NC-17 rating, which almost never happens these days. I’m seeing the film later this week, and I hear it’s pretty hardcore. The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church and Gina Gershon. It’s based on the play by Pulitzer and Tony Award winner Tracy Letts.

Also – I’ll be interviewing William Friedkin live on Twitter this coming Friday, May 11th. It will take place from 930AM-1030AM PST (1230PM – 130PM EST). You’ll need to be following both @BDisgusting and @WilliamFriedkin to tune in.

Five New Stills From ‘Jack & Diane’ Keep The Werewolves Away

Magnolia Pictures’ “lesbian werewolf” movie, Jack & Diane, played recently at the Tribeca film fest and now a handful of new official stills have surfaced courtesy of Magnolia pictures. I’m really curious about this film. What I’ve heard has been mixed, some love it and some don’t. Werewolf movies are an interesting challenge, they’re so hard to get right and I’m secretly hoping I love this one. It’s interesting that all the imagery from this film – at least the imagery that I’ve seen – takes place more or less during the day. Far away from nighttime werewolf action.

Directed by Bradley Rust Gray, “Tomboy Jack and bubbly Diane fall head over heels in love one hot summer in New York City. When Diane reveals she must leave the city for school in Europe, their budding love is tested. Weaving horror elements into a distinctive and fresh yet timeless and universal first-love story, TFF alum Bradley Rust Gray brings his unique vision to this idiosyncratic story of the joys and terrors of first love.

Juno Temple, Riley Keough, Cara Seymour, Dane DeHaan, Michael Chernus and Kylie Minogue all star in the R-rated horror drama.

Magnolia will premiere the film this fall. Head inside for the pics. Thanks to Avery for the heads up! READ MORE

With Cannes a few weeks away, expect a slew of new images, posters and announcements for upcoming horror.

Starring Michael Cera, Juno Temple, Emily Browning and Catalina Sandino Moreno, we’ve learned that Sebastian Silva has finally gone behind cameras on his thriller Magic Magic, which was already acquired worldwide by Sony for release in 2013.

In addition, we got our grubby little mitts of the first ever image. The quality isn’t all that great, but it’s nice to have proof that it finally filmed.

In the film, “While visiting Chile with some friends, Alicia begins to lose her mind when she starts seeing disturbing images which seem to be visible only to her.

[Tribeca 12 Interview] Everything You Want To Know About Grisly Jack & Diane

With the synopsis of Jack and Diane screaming love story and hinting werewolves, you may have asked yourself the same two questions I have. With this sounding more like a love story, is this worth my horror-thirsty attention? Can we expect Jack and Diane to be to lycanthropes, as Let the Right One In was to vampires?

I got with the director Bradley Rust Gray (The Exploding Girl) and proposed these questions. I got the answers plus a whole lot more. Read on, and you’ll see what a well spoken, intelligent film maker he is – how he chose the long hard road over the easy CGI fix – and why BD brethren should take an interest in this lycan-ized love story that has been flying under our radar.
