‘Jurassic Park 4′ Coming In 2015; Licensing Art For ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ and ‘Ghostbusters’

Comingsoon snagged show floor photos from the ongoing Licensing Expo where they not only scored a look at the banner art for Godzilla, but also a few other horror films.

First, there’s a banner for Universal’s delayed Jurassic Park 4, which promises that Steven Spielberg’s park will reopen in 2015. Colin Trevorrow is directing from a script by Amanda Silver & Rick Jaffa and Trevorrow and Derek Connolly. And in case you’re wondering, it will be in 3-D, says the site.

There’s also a new look at the ape Caesar in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, in theaters May 23 from director Matt Reeves and 20th Century Fox. In the prequel’s sequel, “A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.”

Lastly, Sony is teasing the 30th anniversary of Ghostbusters. Does this mean we’ll finally get to see the third film in production, or are they focused on selling more toys? Time will tell. READ MORE

Uh. What?

Sam Neill, who you ~~may~~ better remember as Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 Jurassic Park, talked to the Dominion Post about Universal Pictures’ forthcoming sequel. His response was stomach-churning.

“I’m told it’s a big reboot, a total re-jig.”

The project, which was being called Jurassic Park IV, was put on hold this month so Safety Not Guaranteed‘s Colin Trevorrow could further develop the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. Behind-the-scenes rumblings were that the plot could be about the government who has trained dinosaurs to carry weapons and use them for battle purposes.

And Collider, who caught wind of this shocking blurb, pointed out that producer Frank Marshall told them the project is not a reboot.

Still, you have to admit the timing is weird, especially since the 3-D re-release did quite well, and the fact that Trevorrow was scouting the same locations as the first film. Could Uni have decided they want a reboot instead of a sequel? Will they pull the ol’ title trick and have the park just re-open having similar events occur? If they do, expect the new title to be The Jurassic Park.

And I’m not one to shame a remake, but come on, Jurassic Park is a perfect movie. Neill shouldn’t even joke about it… READ MORE

5 Horror Cereals From The Past!!!

I hate cereal. I hate it when people eat cereal in movies, I hate how some long-haired dude in a bathrobe eating a bowl of cereal became shorthand for “cool slacker guy” in every f*cking movie since 1994. The only person who got away with this was Quentin Tarantino, since he basically started it Pulp Fiction. When I think of Kevin Smith movies, I think of people eating cereal whether it happens in them or not.

Caveat, I have recently started eating cereal, because I have discovered Almond Milk and I like to eat light, healthy grainy sh*t for breakfast during the weekdays. Without Almond Milk, I would have never started, because it’s gross to pour actual cow’s milk over empty calories and watch the whole thing turn into some disgusting sludge. Also, a lot of my feelings about cereal can be traced back to that time I watched The Toxic Avenger on cable in the 5th grade while eating Life Cereal. When they ran over that biker kid’s head with the car and took pictures of his brains… I looked down at my bowl of cereal in what might have been the worst accidental match cut in history. So maybe that’s why I hate cereal…

Universal Releases Statement About Delayed ‘Jurassic Park’

On the heels of last night’s leaked Intel, Universal Pictures has officially decided to take Jurassic Park 4 off its June 13, 2014 release date. Alas, the gates have closed once again. Sigh.

Variety shares the following a statement from the studio: “Universal has decided to release Jurassic Park 4 at a later date giving the studio and filmmakers adequate time to bring audiences the best possible version of the fourth installment in Universal’s beloved franchise. We could not be more excited about the vision that Colin Trevorrow has created for this film, and we look forward to watching as he and the producers create another great chapter in this franchise’s storied history.”

CAs of this writing olin Trevorrow is still helming the pic and is currently rewriting the script with his writing partner Derrick Connelly who he worked with on his Sundance hit Safety Not Guaranteed.

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver penned the original script but no plot details have been revealed.

Frank Marshall is producing with Spielberg exec producing.

Did Universal Just Shut Down ‘Jurassic Park’?!

Update: Universal released this statement.

Back in 1993 the gates never opened to the public, and it looks as if Jurassic Park could remain closed in 2013.

Eagle-eyed AICN caught a few damaging tweets Tuesday night that allege that production has been shut down on Universal’s Jurassic Park 4.

Just last week Director Colin Trevorrow shared a photo from his location scout with the tease “Nublar,” the island from Steven Spielberg’s first film. Today, JP4 Concept Artist Dean Sherriff tweeted and immediately deleted, “JP on hold.”

It gets worse as JP4‘s Digital Assets Manager Todd Smoyer chimed in, “Hollywood makes and crushes dreams. Goodbye JP4.”

Uni has already slated the fourth film for release on June 13, 2014. Hopefully, the studio realized that there’s no way they could have it completed by then and decided to slow it down a bit. I was immediately concerned then they hired Trevorrow, an indie director who is known for Safety Not Guaranteed . With that said, I’ve been wrong before (see Godzilla).

I’m sure with this news spreading throughout the night, we’ll have some sort of official word by lunchtime tomorrow. READ MORE

While Universal is banging the drum for the Jurassic Park 3D re-release – in theaters this Friday, April 5th – they’re having the talent involved with the film reminisce to major outlets about its’ 20th Anniversary. Here’s an interview Laura Dern and Sam Neill did for “The Today Show”, and there’s a cool look at what might have been! Still think Dern was the right choice for the role though.

It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s a nice little look at what could have been. I like Paltrow, but she was way too young and soft at the time to play Dr. Ellie Sattler. Head inside to check it out! READ MORE

‘Jurassic Park 4′ Finds A Director! It’s Not A “Safe” Choice!

Because, you know, your safety isn’t guaranteed when you go to… never mind. In a fairly surprising bit of news, it’s being reported that Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) has been hired to direct Jurassic Park IV for Universal Pictures. Per Deadline, “He met with the studio and filmmakers, and they felt he was a good match for the material, having grown up a huge fan of the trilogy and part of a new generation of directors steeped in all things dinosaur. They felt he would preserve and protect the characters in the story they created.”

Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver are penning the fourth installment with a targeted June 13, 2014 release planned. Unconfirmed storyline details report that the the film could be about the government who has trained dinosaurs to carry weapons and use them for battle purposes.

I’m actually ok with this. I’m sure a lot of the big effects sequences are being pre-visualized already and if this is like any other movie Trevorrow will probably have a 2nd unit director shoot most of the action anyway. So maybe we’ll get some nice characters this time around?

‘Jurassic Park’ Producer Trades In Raptors For TIE Fighters

A quick news brief that comes as a disappointment, one that could set a franchise back billions of years.

According to co-producer Frank Marshall, long time Steve Spielberg collaborator Kathleen Kennedy will not be producing Jurassic Park IV for Universal Pictures.

“No, Ms. Kennedy has moved onto Star Wars and will not be producing JP4,” said Marshall before joking, “She’s traded raptors for TIE fighters.”

Today marks the 81st birthday of composer John Williams. This is the man who brought us one of the most infamous horror scores when he composed Jaws in 1975. Since that day, people are still afraid to get in the water (myself included). He also composed the 1979 Dracula, which starred Frank Langella as Dracula, Laurence Olivier as Van Helsing and Halloween‘s Donald Pleasence as Dr. Jack Seward. There was also his work on Brian De Palma’s The Fury (1978), which featured Kirk Douglas and John Cassavetes (Rosemary’s Baby).

But it’s not only for these films that Williams is so well known and accomplished. He is also responsible for fantastic scores to such films as the Indiana Jones series, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Schindler’s List, Star Wars, and more.

And so with fond memories for the music of each of these films, I wish John Williams a very happy birthday and thank him for all he has brought us! READ MORE

Could this be why Steven Spielberg delayed shooting Robopocalypse?

Universal Pictures announced today that they’ll be returning to Jurassic Park, with the fourth film to be shot in 3-D for release on June 13, 2014. Spielberg won’t direct, but will return to produce.

Variety states that Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver penned the script, which was previously announced to be about the government who has trained dinosaurs to carry weapons and use them for battle purposes. This storyline is yet to be confirmed.

The Jurassic Park trilogy has grossed more than a billion dollars worldwide with 2001 Jurassic Park 3 grossing $363 million worldwide.

Today’s news flow is out of control slow so I’m going to drop a bomb of videos on your guys that will ease the pain of a Friday afternoon leading into the Halloween weekend (even though Halloween is mid-week this year, which sucks ass).

Let’s see, what do we have here… Ok, let’s start with my personal favorite of the bunch, a video courtesy of Stan Winston School that takes us behind the scenes of Steven Spielberg’s 1994 classic Jurassic Park. In the below video you’ll learn how the “puppet” Raptors operated… with a human inside. Yup! “Stan Winston Studio created multiple raptors for Jurassic Park, including full-size cable-controlled puppets, half-puppets, insert legs and men-in-suits,” says the video. “This exclusive “Making of” video, narrated by raptor suit performer, 25-year SWS supervisor & co-founder of Legacy Effects, John Rosengrant, walks you through the evolution of Jurassic Park’s raptor suits, from first foam fabricated “garbage bag test” to the finished suits that you see in the final film.” AMAZING.

Next up is a behind-the-scenes video from the 1997 Alien: Resurrection where studioADI shares a never-before-seen look at the “Alien Newborn Death”. “Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet wanted practical effects for the scene in which the Newborn is sucked through a small hole in a window into space,” they explain. “He wanted the head to be the final image, first stripped of skin and then the skull shattering as it disappeared into space. That was a whole lotta’ Newborn to make disappear. Here are the first tests that, despite the shaky wall mock-up, had us moving in the right direction. A network of wires attached to a pre-scored skin went first, followed by a pre-scored and delicate skull rigged with an even more complex spiderweb of wires to shatter and pull pieces through the hole. And then… what better way to end this video by spilling our guts…”

Zombies are no match for the love of pets! Watch Pets vs. Zombies and have a Happy Howloween from Petco! Follow that with Housemates of Horror, a Fox Home Entertainment spoof where a bunch of horror icons share a living space. Screen Junkies, who usually knocks it out of the park, shared this ho-hum video entitled Halloween with Mike Myers as Michael Myers (it was only a matter of time until someone made this).

Universal Wants Kennedy and Spielberg To Open New ‘Jurassic Park’ Location ASAP?

On October 9 Steven Spielberg’s classic E.T. arrives on Blu-ray for the first time ever. To build press for the day, producer Kathleen Kennedy talked to various outlets about the new release. Collider snuck in a question about the long gestated Jurassic Park IV.

So, what is the status of the fourth Jurassic Park?

“Writing, writing, writing,” emphasizes Kennedy. “It’s really hard to keep these things going when there’s an expectation and a desire by the public and the audience to keep certain franchises going. As filmmakers, we often sit there constantly saying, ‘Okay. We have to answer the question, ‘Why do another one?” If you can’t answer that question, you shouldn’t be doing it. It’s tough. We’re trying to come up with a story that makes sense and isn’t going to disappoint people and is, hopefully, going to get people excited and reinvigorate the franchise. We’ve got to start with a script and the story.”

When asked what is the conversation with the studio is like, Kennedy explained: “They’re just like, “When?” They don’t care about the agony we’re going through.”

I think the real question that should have been asked is: Jurassic Park IV or Jurassic Park 3D? The entire franchise has pulled in $1.9 billion worldwide thus far. READ MORE

I love playing the “what if?” game, especially when it comes to major films and incredibly powerful filmmakers. This one is the size of a dinosaur.

Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park is one of my all time favorite films. It never even crossed my mind that someone else may have ended up adapting the Michael Crichton novel. But what if James Cameron, known for his darker fare such as The Terminator and Aliens, ended up directing?

The filmmaker with the world’s two highest-grossing films under his belt revealed to HuffPost UK that he had always wanted to make the film Jurassic Park, but was beaten to it by Jaws director Steven Spielberg.

“I tried to buy the book rights and he beat me to it by a few hours,” Cameron revealed at the recently-opened “Titanic Museum” in Belfast, where the ship he brought to the big screen was designed and crafted back at the beginning of last century.

“But when I saw the film, I realized that I was not the right person to make the film, he was. Because he made a dinosaur movie for kids, and mine would have been aliens with dinosaurs, and that wouldn’t have been fair.

“Dinosaurs are for 8-year-olds. We can all enjoy it, too, but kids get dinosaurs and they should not have been excluded for that. His sensibility was right for that film, I’d have gone further, nastier, much nastier.”

Spielberg’s 1993 film, which stars Sam Neill and Laura Dern, is nearly $1 billion worldwide. Universal is post-converting the film for 3-D release on April 5, 2013 – that should tip the iceberg and set the stage for the already announced 3-D remake. READ MORE

Writers Jump From ‘Apes’ To ‘Jurassic Park’

While Universal Pictures has been trying all summer to generate new franchises, the studio is getting moving with the fourth installment of its biggest one, Jurassic Park. Deadline reports that Universal is setting Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver to write the script for the fourth film, which will be produced by Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy. As previously reported, Spielberg won’t direct this one.

Silver and Haffa penned the incredible Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Fox’s Planet of the Apes sequel that was beloved by fans and critics alike. Their “think outside of the box” mentality is what Hollywood is thriving on, and they are perfect to inject Jurassic Park with new life.

The first three films, which started with the Spielberg-directed 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park based on the bestselling novel by Michael Crichton, have grossed over $1.9 billion worldwide collectively. Universal is rereleasing the original film in post-converted 3D on July 19, 2013.

[No Thanks] Original Jurassic Park Gets 3 D Treatment

A remake is one thing, but continually ripping off consumers is another. Who is allowing all of these horrible 3-D transfers to make it into theaters? It’s absolutely disgusting.

Universal today announced plans to re-release Steven Spielberg’s life-changing (to a 13-year-old at least) Jurassic Park in theaters July 19, 2013.

To celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary, Universal will rip-off fans and present a new 3-D transfer that features, you guessed it, FAKE 3-D! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you CANNOT convert a 2-D image into a 3-dimensional one. It defies science. It defies logic. It’s just NOT POSSIBLE. If you enjoy pop-up books, go ahead and plop down $15, I’ll save it for a Blu-ray of my liking.

Starring Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, the Spielberg-directed adaptation (of a Michael Crichton novel) opened in theaters June 11, 1993 and went on to gross $357 million domestic and nearly $1 billion worldwide. READ MORE

In the days before I could track every film’s progress on the internet, only two movies stand out in my memory as having built a real sense of anticipation in my youth. Not just the awareness that the the film would be in theaters, but a yearning that stretched out over months and months (the kind that, healthily or not, many of us are now able to sustain year-round with dozens and dozens of films).

The two movies, in my memory at least, that stand out in that regard are T2: Judgement Day and Jurassic Park. When Jurassic Park came out on June 11th 1993, it already felt like a watershed moment. Sure, a lot of that had to do with print and television handling the hyping duties that are now left largely to the online world – but I still trusted that I was getting something special. The sense that there was some alchemy that had happened on Spielberg’s film that allowed for the truly magical had been imprinted on me. Unlike today where you often have to dial out hype completely to gain an enjoyable perspective on a film, I did not leave that theater disappointed. At all. The hype led me into the theater, but the film supported it.

A few weeks back I was able to speak with three of the principal members of the creative team that brought the wonderful creatures of Jurassic Park (back to) life. Dennis Muren of ILM (Star Wars, T2, Super 8), Phil Tippett (Robocop, Starship Troopers) and John Rosengrant of Legacy Effects (a veteran of Stan Winston Studios, Rosengrant worked alongside Winston on the Jurassic Park films and many others). In anticipation of the October 25th Blu-ray release of the Jurassic Park Trilogy, the three sat together to discuss how they worked together to create the effects for the iconic film.

As a bonus – I also sat down with Ariana Richards, who portrayed young computer hacker Lex Murphy in the first film (and briefly in the second), to get a sense of what it was like to be a child onset amidst the chaos of the shoot.

‘Ghost Busters,’ ‘Jurassic Park’ Heading Back to Theaters?

The idea of studios re-releasing major franchise films isn’t a new one, and while it comes off as a grab for another fistful of cash, it’s still awesome for the fans who weren’t lucky enough to see them upon initial release. While we were sitting in theaters experiencing both Ghost Busters and Jurassic Park, plenty of parents were popping out babies, all of which are now of the right age to experience both films for the first time.

According to Empire, Steven Spielberg’s groundbreaking Jurassic Park is headed back into UK cinemas on September 23. Hopefully a US release soon follows in conjunction with the new Blu-ray set. Check out a trailer below.

Also, Digital Spy is reporting that Ghostbusters will return to cinemas next month as well. The ’80s spirit-hunting classic is to open in cinemas worldwide this Halloween as an all-new digitally-restored release. The fact they use the wording “cinemas” eludes to also another UK release. Lucky bastards! Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver starred in the sci-fi comedy, which was directed by Ivan Reitman. Ghostbusters grossed $290 million on its original theatrical release in 1984 and spawned a sequel in 1989.

One of my favorite movies of all time is Jurassic Park. Seriously, how fun of a movie is that? It’s got adventure, horror, action, comedy, drama and, above all, mother eff-ing dinosaurs! I remember sitting in theaters on opening night, so awed and amazed that I couldn’t even eat the popcorn I had sitting in my lap. Talk about a movie going experience. My Hanukkah gift that year was Jurassic Park on VHS and you better believe I made my parents regret that decision. I honestly think I watched it once a day for about three weeks. Anyways, below is the main theme of Jurassic Park, slowed down apparently 1000%. Listening to it, I’m already feeling the urge to pop in the movie and remember what it’s like to be a child again.

Update: Universal reps are denying the reports. Nothing like kick-starting the week off with a completely unconfirmed rumor, one that I’m sure will be squashed by the time I wake up. At least I can have one night filled with wonderful dreams of dinosaurs rocking military weapons and stomping on people’s heads. AICN pointed to blog site BehindtheThrills (which is now down from all of the traffic) that was hosting images of Universal Studios production board that listed Jurassic Park IV on stages 7, 10, 12 & 14. So this means a hilarious prankster either changed the board, or something “big” is going down at Universal. Is Joe Johnston working on building stages as he completes Captain America? Are they filming a teaser trailer? What the heck is going on? All I know is I want another trip to “Jurassic Park”…in 3-D.
