[SXSW '13] Corey Mitchell’s Day 2: Short Cuts

After all the hype (and massive letdown) from Day 1 at SXSW in the form of The Evil Dead remake, my second day viewing consisted of 18 short films over two blocks. The first, Shorts Program 1, did not provide any Bloody Disgusting-worthy material other than a brief crime scene shot featured in Kat Candler’s brilliant Black Metal, which was featured here in whole this past January. (I also worked on the film as a crime and music scene consultant and as music supervisor.)

The second block, however, is where the beefy center was located — the Midnight Shorts — at 9:00pm. Go figure? SXSW Shorts Programmer Claudette Godfrey appropriately set the tone with beer in hand and F-bombs on her lips, despite the early hour. What followed was a mixed-leaning-towards-solid bag of sex, guns, and shrubs. READ MORE

[Premiere] Watch The Entire ‘Black Metal’ Short Film

As a thank you to all of the faithful readers here at Bloody Disgusting, director Kat Candler, along with the Sundance Film Festival and YouTube, proudly present the World Premiere of Black Metal.

That’s right, you can watch the nine-minute short film online for free before its cinematic World Premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Black Metal will be available to screen from today, January 17th, until January 27th.

The short features Texan dark metallers Vesperian Sorrow as the Black Metal band, Crown Of Horns. In addition, there is music from Denmark’s Black Metal unit Horned Almighty and also Arkansas doomsters Pallbearer. Bloody Disgusting’s own Corey Mitchell worked on Black Metal as a heavy metal consultant, a true crime consultant, and as the music supervisor.

This is Kat’s way of saying thank you to all of the Bloody Disgusting readers who have shown your belief in the film either through positive comments here or by your financial support, as many of you pitched in finances via the Indiegogo crowd sourcing site.

Black Metal is for you, by you, and because of you. We hope you will enjoy it. Enjoy it below! READ MORE

[LAFF '12] ‘Saturday Morning Massacre’ Scares Up Some Tasty Treats

First things first. I have been helping out as a heavy metal consultant and true crime expert on a short film called Black Metal that will be directed this summer by Kat Candler and will star Jonny Mars. Candler received one of the “Story By…” credits for Saturday Morning Massacre (SMM) and Mars is a lead actor, producer, and also received a “Story By…” credit for SMM. This film also features a closing credit song by Vesperian Sorrow, an Austin, Texas “extreme dark metal” band that I helped select for Black Metal.

Alright, now that that’s out of the way — on to Saturday Morning Massacre!

SMM premiered tonight at the Los Angeles Film Festival, hopefully in front of a raucous crowd ready for a fun horror thrill ride. I caught it earlier in the week in a room filled with several jaded film reviewers and even they clearly enjoyed themselves. READ MORE
