Kevin Smith Thinks ‘Red State’ Deserves Awards, Has a Temper Tantrum

redstate080611 Kevin Smith Thinks Red State Deserves Awards, Has a Temper Tantrum

The Independent Spirit Award nominations are in. I truly don’t care. What’s interesting is Kevin Smith, who just can’t seem to stay out of the news (I really wish he would). Via his Twitter account @thatkevinsmith the writer/director of Red State bitched and moaned about his zero noms calling the awards “#fakeindie,” which is absolutely hilarious considering that’s exactly what Red State was.

How the fuck did the @SpiritAwards NOT nominate Michael Parks? Nor John Goodman? Nor Melissa Leo?” Smith snarled on Twitter. “Fuck your idiotic organization.

What Smith probably meant to say was: “How the fuck was MY movie not recognized? I’m Kevin Smith. I’m awesome!” Don’t you dare argue with genius!

While I won’t go as far as to say Red State was absolutely terrible, it is included on my “Worst Horror of 2011″ feature, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the film landed a Razzie nom in 2012. Fingers crossed for justice.

You guys love to hate on us for disliking the film, so go forth and insult away! READ MORE

Red State (V)

RED STATE is a horror film in which a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America.

A group of kids encounter a crazed preacher (based on Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church) who gives a whole new meaning to the term “extreme fundamentalism.

Red State unfolds in a small town dominated by a fundamentalist preacher, Abin Cooper. It tells the story of three high school boys who, on their way to an internet arranged meeting with a woman, end up crossing paths with Cooper. The encounter sets into motion a series of events that causes all hell to break loose.

Comic-Con ’11: More on Kevin Smith’s ‘Red State’ Panel

Just because our fearless leader Mr Disgusting likes Kevin Smith about as much as Southwest Airlines, that doesn’t mean the rest of the Bloody Disgusting crew share his resent-iment. And by the rest, I mean me. The filmmaker garnered a huge fan response at Comic Con on Saturday when he packed out Hall H at Comic Con for his annual Q&A and sneak peek at his horror flick Red State (review).

As well as showing a five-minute death scene and discussing the Westboro Baptists Church-inspired villains, Smith talked about his partner’s involvement in the flick. His wife of 10 years, Jennifer Schwalbac, has appeared in several of Smith’s films, mostly as a villain. Her cameo as a gun-wielding religious fundamentalist in ‘Red State’ was no exception, but Smith said this time he saw her darker side.

Hot Times With Mom in First ‘Red State’ Clip

It’s funny how Kevin Smith used so much energy spewing hate at the press and then pulled a publicity stunt acquiring his own movie for $20. If that’s not begging for press, I don’t know what is. He continues his off-the-charts hypocrisy by providing MTV with the first ever clip from Red State (read our review) that puts three young teens in an awkward position.

Before being self-released via his Smodcast Pictures Banner in October (I still bet money that the Weinsteins will be involved), Smith will be taking the religious horror thriller on the road this coming March. It follows a group of misfits who encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America.

Kevin Smith to Trim ‘Red State’ for Theatrical Tour

Ryan Daley was one of the first ever to catch Kevin Smith’s Red State when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. He wasn’t a fan. While not hating the movie, he thought it moved too far away from horror and focused too much attention on hefty dialogue. Maybe Smith agrees?

During a podcast interview with the Kevin and Josh Movie Show, Smith revealed he plans on removing nearly 10 minutes of footage before taking it on the road March 5. You’ll find a taste of the interview inside.

Sundance ’11 REVIEW: Kevin Smith’s ‘Red State’ is “Dull”

I wanted to start unrolling Ryan Daley’s Sundance Film Festival reviews tomorrow, but you guys have been clamoring for Bloody Disgusting’s official stance on Kevin Smith’s Red State. And for those of you expecting a biased review from a Smith hater, let it be known that Daley is a huge fan.

‘Red State’ isn`t particularly fun to watch with a group. In fact, it`s not particularly fun at all. Perhaps if the horror aspects had been more prominent, instead of repeatedly shoved to the background in favor of heavy wads of dialogue, Smith would have had a future cult hit on his hands.

To read Daley’s entire review all you have to do is click the title above. Watch for all of the reviews in the coming days, but until then catch up on all of our Sundance coverage.

Sundance ’11: Meet “The Sons” and “Caleb” in ‘Red State’

Writer/director Kevin Smith debuted two new Red State one sheets thanks to donations to Kenny Gordon Foundation from sites including XCellentCreations. One features the character ‘Caleb”, while the other hosts “The Sons”, a trio of what looks to be a group of no-good kids. One kid has a rat-tail, and that’s awesome. Kyle Gallner, Melissa Leo, Dermot Mulroney, Michael Angarano, Steven Root, Michael Parks, and John Goodman lead the cast in the horror film in which a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America. Sundance ’11: A Slightly Less Sucky ‘Red State’ Poster

Website GFB Robot donated $2,000 to help kids in Haiti (details here), their prize was the chance to debut yet another fugly Red State poster that cleaned up the font just a little bit from the first (so it’s only kinda gross). The one sheet features a new look at “The Father” in Kevin Smith’s political horror that premieres this coming January at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. It follows a group of misfits encounter fundamentalism gone to the extreme in Middle America.

Fugly New ‘Red State’ Poster Introduces Cliche Virgin

What’s with stars using their talents as collateral to force fans to donate money these days? That entire “donate or we won’t tweet” situation (that completely failed) last week was absolutely appalling (and loaded with narcissism), especially considering how meaningless $1m was between the lot of ‘em. Now writer/director Kevin Smith is hoping to “do some good” with the release of his second Red State poster that was only unveiled after a bunch of generous fans pledged $1000 to The Wayne Foundation in less than 30 minutes. I just don’t appreciate public figures holding things over their fan’s head forcing them to donate. If you’re a charitable person, you can make your fans aware of the opportunities without forcing them to empty their pockets (here’s an example from Bloody Disgusting). If you really want to help change the world, then maybe post links to various charities or include a banner to the Wayne Foundation in all of your podcasts/blogs/etc.? Either way, if you feel strongly about the Wayne Foundation’s cause, make sure to donate. Anyways, Red State is premiering at Sundance this coming January, hopefully the thriller isn’t as fugly as the following poster. Blarg.

Kevin Smith to Auction Off ‘Red State’ on Ebay?

Since the very first word, director Kevin Smith has “planned” quite unordinary steps in getting his political horror flick Red State made. While his intentions were quirky, it sounds as if this were your average indie Hollywood (I know that’s an oxymoron) production. Now that the film is in the can, Smith tells /Film of yet another oddball idea – assuming his film will be accepted into Sundance. “Here’s something that’s not so much news as my stated intentions for RED STATE: if it gets into Sundance, my plan is to pick the RED STATE distributor right there – IN THE ROOM – auction style,” he tells the site via e-mail. “Might even bring up a professional auctioneer to make it fun and unintelligible. And if you’re a multi-millionaire who can’t make it to the first screening of RED STATE, fear not: maybe we’ll set up an eBay page for the post-screening bid-calling as well.” The real question is: what will the starting bid be? What if it sucks? Can I bid $1? Is there a reserve? What’s the by it now option? ROFL.
