[TV] Weird! “Scream” Is Headed To TV! Wes Craven In Talks To Direct

New has just hit that MTV is moving forward with an official pilot order for “Scream”, per THR. This comes after nearly a year of speculation, but now it seems all but pre-determined that this thing will actually be shot. Will we ever see it? IE, will it make it to series? My guess is yes – it’s too well known of a property for MTV to not test the waters on it (unless they find the pilot to be atrocious, but I’m guessing they won’t).

Wes Craven is in discussions to come back to direct the pilot, which will be an hour-long. It appears as though Kevin Williamson will not be returning since MTV is currently taking meetings with other writers. This also probably means the death of Scream 5.

There’s no word on if any of the original cast will be back. My guess is they certainly wouldn’t star, but we might see a cameo here and there.

Dimension Films will co-produce. If “Scream” receives a series order it will hit in late summer 2014.

[TV] “The Following” Must Have Some Following Since It Just Got Renewed

I still haven’t gotten past the pilot of “The Following”, but apparently a lot of you have! Per Variety, “Warner Bros. TV’s “The Following” bowed strongly in January in the Monday 9 p.m. timeslot, and sees benefits from Live+7 ratings (particularly DVR use), which places the frosh drama in the No. 2 broadcast drama spot this season in 18-49. Fox ordered 15 episodes for its second season, the same order as its first run.

The FBI estimates there are currently over 300 active serial killers in the United States. What would happen if these killers had a way of communicating and connecting with each other? What if they were able to work together and form alliances across the country? What if one brilliant psychotic serial killer was able to bring them all together and activate a following? Welcome to “The Following”, the terrifying new thriller from creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dawson’s Creek,” the Scream franchise) and director Marcos Siega (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dexter”).

“The Following” airs Monday nights on Fox at 9/8c.

This is made for people like me who missed the last four episodes of “The Following” and want to catch up. Actually, come to think of it, I missed the last four episodes because I strongly disliked the pilot. But who knows? Maybe the show got better and this is all I need to catch up and enjoy episode 6 on, “The Fall”, on Monday?

Kevin Williamson Reveals The Original Plot Of ‘Scream 3′

I know that Scream 3 is sort of a divisive entry in that franchise. A lot of you guys dig the “Scooby gang goes to Hollywood” angle, some not so much. I actually kind of liked the movie when I first saw it in 2000, but now I can’t really get through it. Something about Kevin Smith appearing in this film – and then spoofing the series a year later in Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back – links the two films so closely in my mind that remembering either one of them activates the same pain center.

Of course there’s a ton of other stuff wrong with it too. Aside from “he was making a movie called ‘Stab’. He was stabbed.” Incoming screenwriter Ehren Kruger didn’t fully understand the franchise. The screenwriter who did understand the franchise, Kevin Williamson, was too busy to take a pass at a draft. But now, speaking to ET about his upcoming show “The Following”, he’s revealed his original concept for Part 3. One that takes a page from April Fool’s Day.

[TV] New Promo For “The Following” Gets Organized!

I’m not saying I won’t give “The Following” a shot. I will. I’m just saying that, right here and right now, it looks incredibly stupid. So it’ll probably be a success. Anyway there’s a new promo for it that plays up the organizational aspects of this league of serial killers.

[TV] “The Following” Comes Under Fire For Violent Content

We’ve been covering the Kevin Bacon starring serial killer “The Following” on the site for a while now, so this feels like it’s worth mentioning. The thriller from creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dawson’s Creek,” the Scream franchise) and director Marcos Siega (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Dexter”) has been the target of scrutiny at this week’s TCA Conference.

I honestly don’t believe fictional violence and real life violence are at all linked, but apparently some people out there either feel differently or want to self righteously exploit tragedy. Per Deadline, “critics peppered Williamson with questions about whether television shows like this one may be part of the problem.” Williamson responded, “I think we all worry about (the violence issue)… Who wasn’t affected by Sandy Hook? We say in the writers room after that and were all traumatized by it. I know that when I put pen to paper, it affects me, but I’m not sure how We don’t sit around (in the writers room) and think of ways to kill people. I’m sitting and thinking of the drama. It’s meant to be a thriller and a provocative story.

To quote Clueless, “Until mankind is peaceful enough not to have violence on the news, there’s no point in taking it out of shows that need it for entertainment value.

[San Diego Comic-Con '12] Kevin Williamson Speaks On Pilot Presentation of “The Following”

One of our Comic-Con 2012 highlights was the opportunity to chat with the cast and creators of Fox’s upcoming series “The Following”. Even though only the pilot has been filmed so far, they all provided us with some thoughtful insights into the show.

First we spoke with creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson, who has been working on the project in one form or another for over 16 years. While he wants “The Following” to be gripping and leave audiences breathless, it has a love story at the root of it.

TV: How Is The “Scream” TV Series Going To Work?

Scream 06312 TV: How Is The Scream TV Series Going To Work?

I’m not sure how this is going to work. The original entries in the Scream series skewered the horror tropes of their time – along with the tropes of sequels and trilogies in general – with varying degrees of success. Now we’re getting word that there will indeed be a “Scream” TV series. It’ll be on MTV, which seems like a good fit, but what exactly will they be deconstructing? Scream 4 kind of left a lot on the table but I’m not sure any of the pieces that could be picked up are especially well suited for television. Who knows though? I could be wrong.

Per TV Line, “MTV is developing a weekly series based on the Scream film franchise, sources confirm to TVLine exclusively. Former MTV execs Tony DiSanto and Liz Gateley, who are shepherding the project under their DiGa production shingle, are on the hunt for a writer to pen the pilot. It’s unclear what role, if any, Scream auteurs Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven will have in the potential series.

In regard to that last sentence, I’m not sure either Williamson or Craven will be back. Of course I could be wrong, but I get the picture that Williamson has been burned by this franchise quite a bit.

What about you? Would you watch a “Scream” TV series? And what does this mean for Scream 5?

I’m not sure if I have any more room left in my day, let alone another hour to dedicate to another TV show. This is where you guys come into play. Kevin Williamson Is Not Writing ‘Scream 5′

Kevin Williamson Is Not Writing Scream 5

Here’s some news on Scream 5, albeit brief.

Franchise writer Kevin Williamson will not be returning, which comes as no surprise considering the reports both here and here regarding Scream 4 rewrites and behind-the-scenes fights between Williamson and the Weinsteins.

When website Assignment X asked Williamson about the fifth film, he candidly responded, “I don’t know. I’m not doing it.

Franchise director Wes Craven had also stated back in May 2011 that he was choosing “summer break” over Scream 5.

Bloody Disgusting has heard from inside that the Weinstein Company is looking to young writers/directors to take the franchise in a fresh direction. It should be stated that they change their mind daily. Watch for anything official as it comes in. What would you like to see in a fifth Scream? I know what I don’t want to see, and that’s more Scary Movie crossovers (oh Anthony Anderson, you kill me).

Deadline reports that “Vampire Diaries” co-creator/ executive producer Kevin Williamson is working on a new supernatural drama project, envisioned as a potential companion for the CW’s flagship vampire drama. The untitled project, which is in early stages of development at Warner Bros. TV for the CW, is described as “The X-Files meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” It focuses on a group of people who investigate paranormal happenings.
