Yesterday I hopped on the phone with the film’s star, Luke Evans (The Raven, Fast & Furious 6), and we talked about the preparation required to play a man so effective of killing he’s able to wipe out a gang of violent killers in gloriously messy fashion. We also discussed the most difficult kill of the movie (hint: it was yesterday’s clip) and the status of The Crow.

I recently chatted with Kitamura about the conceit of this film (ultimate psychopath vs. bush league psychopaths) and how he saw Luke Evans as the ultimate killer. I also got an update on Versus 2, turns out there’s already a script!

Exclusive Clip From ‘The Collection’ Blu-ray Takes A Look At The Film’s Practical Effects!

The Collection arrives on Blu-ray Disc, DVD, Digital Download and Video On Demand today March 26th from Lionsgate Home Entertainment. The Blu-ray Disc and DVD will both feature Ultraviolet Digital Copy. The Blu-ray and DVD include audio commentary with Director/Co-Writer Marcus Dunstan and Co-Writer Patrick Melton and a host of special features – from one of which this exclusive clip was taken. It’s a cool look at the practical effects work of the film that I’m sure is much longer on the Blu itself.

The Collection follows a twisted madman who “collects” humans in a booby-trapped house of horrors. Starring Josh Stewart (The Dark Knight Rises), the film also stars Emma Fitzpatrick (The Social Network), Lee Tergesen (Texas Chainsaw: The Beginning) and Christopher McDonald (HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire”), and is written by established horror writing team Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (Feast series, Saw IV – Saw 3D: The Final Chapter). Directed by Dunstan, it is the second time he has directed a film the pair has written.

Poster Round-Up: ‘No One Lives,’ ‘Rubberneck,’ ‘The Silence,’ and ‘Last Exorcism Part II’

We’ve landed a trio of new one-sheets beginning with an international stitched up look at WWE’s awful No One Lives (read our review), acquired by Anchor Bay Films for release later this year. In the film, “A ruthless criminal gang takes a young couple hostage and goes to ground in an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere. When the captive girl is killed, the tables are unexpectedly turned. The gang finds itself outsmarted by an urbane and seasoned killer determined to ensure that no one lives.Midnight Meat Train‘s Ryuhei Kitamura directs.

Then there’s the UK quad for The Last Exorcism Part II, in theaters March 1 from CBS Films. “Continuing where the first film left off, Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell) is found alone and terrified in the woods. Back in the relative safety of civilization, Nell realizes that she can’t remember entire portions of the previous months only that she is the last surviving member of her family. Just as Nell begins the difficult process of starting a new life, the evil force that once possessed her is back with other, unimaginably horrific plans that mean herlast exorcism was just the beginning.

Also added is a poster for Alex Karpovsky’s Rubberneck, starring Alex Karpovsky, Jaime Ray Newman, Amanda Good Hennessey, Dennis Staroselsky and Dakota Shepard. Via Tribeca Film, “Months after a one-night-stand-gone-nowhere with his sexy coworker Danielle, sad-sack Boston scientist Paul still finds himself increasingly consumed with obsessive thoughts toward his clearly uninterested colleague. Paul nurtures his fantasies with the occasional polite exchange at work, believing Danielle will eventually come around, but when Danielle seems receptive to the advances of another lab worker, Paul’s barely contained delusions and long-repressed impulses threaten to bubble over. Is Paul just a jilted loser, or is there something more dangerous lurking beneath the surface of his scarred psyche?Rubberneck will be available nationwide on VOD starting February 19th.

Lastly, in theaters March 8 from Music Box Films is The Silence, Baran bo Odar’s film starring Ulrich Thomsen, Wotan Wilke Möhring, Sebastian Blomberg, Katrin Sass, Burghart Klaussner. READ MORE

[BD Review] Evan Calls ‘The Collection’ A Bigger, Sillier and Fun Sequel

Now in theaters everywhere is Marcus Dunstan’s The Collection, his and co-writer Patrick Melton’s sequel to their Saw-esq The Collector. Evan Dickson writes in with his thoughts on the film, which follows the further escapades of “The Collector,” and his massive collection.

While I didn’t fall in love with The Collection, there’s something admirable about its ambition to not be more of the same. Its increased scope and willingness to stray from the beats of its predecessor, The Collector, indicate that co-writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan (the latter of whom also directed) have an actual creative engagement with the material. So if the good news is that they’re not treading the same ground as the first film, the bad news is that – depending on what you’re looking to get out of the experience – it may not work as well.

Click here to read the review in its entirety. After you’ve had a chance to check it out, return here and write your own review to tell all of BD what YOU thought!

[TIFF '12 Interview] ‘No One Lives’ Director Ryuhei Kitamura

When the WWE Films logo appears before a film, I keep my expectations in check. While I’ll admit that the Kane vehicle, See No Evil is in my guilty pleasure list, the majority I’ve seen are straight-to-video fare at its laziest. Like most DTV, they’re an attempt to cash in on whatever the fad may be at the moment and hope that fans looking for a quick fix won’t mind. From the offset, No One Lives (review) comes across as just that. The attempt at “clever” dialogue is consistently laughable but once the film is suddenly steered in a different direction at the end of the first act, my attention was grabbed. For the remainder of its duration, No One Lives is a creatively violent, trashy ride in the way the Friday the 13th movies are. If you watch it for what it is, fun will be had.

The skillful directing of Ryuhei Kitamura (Midnight Meat Train, Versus) is the main reason why I ignored the film’s obvious issues. I had the pleasure of chatting with him at TIFF ’12, where the film was getting its premiere. I asked him what drew him to the script. “I started reading it. First I felt; oh okay, No One Lives, everybody dies. Girl running in the woods, a couple of gangsters, okay another torture porn kind of movie which I love to watch but didn’t want to do myself. Then there’s a twist and turn in the script and I simply felt: wow this is a non-stop ride and it’s a fun popcorn project which was very different from the movie I did, Midnight Meat Train. That was much more twisted and a philosophical. So this was to me a fun, straightforward genre movie almost like the movies from the 80’s.READ MORE
