Legendary’s now-filming Godzilla reboot is still in the early stages of filming for such a massive production. Now helmer Gareth Edwards (Monsters) checks in from set with his video diary – exactly one year to the day before the film is released.

Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Aaron Johnson, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins, Yuki Morita and Richard T. Jones round out the cast. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce along with Mary Parent. Max Borenstein, Frank Darabont and Dave Callaham penned the script. Production is (obviously) currently underway.

Warners has released a new official one sheet for Guillermo del Toro’s (apparently awesome) Pacific Rim. This one teases the size of one of the giant Jaegers as it strides down a destroyed city block. Also, I’m thankful this isn’t another viral image.

In the film, “When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. Warners has released yet another viral image for Guillermo del Toro’s (apparently awesome) Pacific Rim. So the movie still exists, don’t worry. This one tries to get you to join “K-Science”, which is what I suppose you do when you are too nerdy to pilot a robot.

Warners has released some “viral” marketing for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, and I’m not sure how excited it’s supposed to get me. Don’t get me wrong – I’m DYING to see the movie, especially after hearing the Wondercon footage described. It’s just that images like these don’t make a dent in terms of my anticipation (nor do they make me want to see it less, on the otherhand). It’s just… neutral.

To some degree, this stuff is interesting. But you reach a certain saturation point with it. Now, we’ve got a video that’s actually pretty cool – a well-shot look at one of the rappelling stunt sequences in this section of the film.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla. is still on its’ first week of production under director Gareth Edwards and there’s already a second set video. In a way I think it’s smart that they’re doing these, but part of my wants to be blown away sight unseen when I enter the theater. But for those of you who are aching for it, it seems like they’re giving you what you want on the destruction tip.

Frank Darabont Says Origins Of The New ‘Godzilla’ Will Be Different

While ousted producers Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes, Gangster Squad) and Roy Lee (The Departed, The Strangers, The Grudge) move forward with their lawsuit against Legendary Pictures, newly hired screenwriter Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, “The Walking Dead”) is hard at work on his pass of Legendary and Warner Bros.’ Gareth Edwards directed Godzilla remake.

Darabont has to be in a bit of a rush (the film starts shooting in March), but he took some time out to speak with io9. The conversation is encouraging. “What we’re trying to do with the new movie is not have it camp, not have it be campy. We’re kind of taking a cool new look at it… We want this to be a terrifying force of nature. And what was really cool, for me, is there was a very compelling human drama that I got to weave into it. It’s not that cliched, thinly disguised romance or bromance, or whatever. It’s different, it’s a different set of circumstances than you’re used to seeing.” When pressed on if he was going to connect Godzilla to a different contemporary issue he replied, “Yes I am, but I’m not going to give it away.”

Frank Darabont Rewriting ‘Godzilla’ As Producers Dan Lin And Roy Lee Exit The Project

Update: Per AICN the film starts shooting on March 14th in Vancouver and Hawaii and will operate under the working title of “Nautilus.”

Legendary and Warner Bros.’ claim that their Gareth Edwards directed Godzilla remake is due to start shooting in March – but it hit more than a few snags over the weekend. One potentially good development is that Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, “The Walking Dead”) has been hired to do a pass on the script. I’m not sure how they can fully accomodate and implement a rewrite in time for a March start date, but weirder things have happened. Then comes the news that producers Dan Lin (Sherlock Holmes, Gangster Squad) and Roy Lee (The Departed, The Strangers, The Grudge) have been let go from the project.

This could potentially head to lawsuit country, there have been some reports that the parting is amicable, but this morning it appears as though all is not well. Per Deadline, “Actually, it could prove as toxic to Godzilla than the time the fire breather took on the smog monster Hedorah. This one’s going to wind up in the courts, I’m told. My understanding is, Lin and Lee refused to reduce the fees they signed on for when the original deal was made. Legendary brass feels it has the latitude to get rid of them, and is doing just that, exercising a pay or play clause and paying them upfront money to go away, with no back-end or credit on the film. The potential back-end on a global franchise is where the big bucks are.”

On November 30 LD Entertainment will open The Collection revealing all of the nasty items within. The film is directed by Marcus Dunstan and written by Dunstan and Patrick Melton (their writing credits include Piranha 3DD, Feast, Saw IV, V, VI, Saw 3D and of course The Collector and Pacific Rim). I sat down with the pair earlier today, and while my full interview with them doesn’t hit until Thursday I figured I’d share a few tidbits on Waterproof and The Collected – the potential third installment of The Collector!

In the new sequel, “When Elena’s (Emma Fitzpatrick) friends take her to a secret party at an undisclosed location, she never imagined she would become the latest victim of The Collector, a psychopathic killer. The Collector kidnaps and transports her to an abandoned hotel he’s transformed into his own private maze of torture and death. Upon learning of his daughter’s disappearance, Elena’s wealthy father (Christopher McDonald) hires a group of mercenaries to retrieve her from the vicious grips of The Collector. These mercenaries coerce Arkin (Josh Stewart), the only man to have escaped the wrath of this heinous monster, to lead them through thegruesome labyrinth. Now, Arkin finds himself fighting for his own life in order to save Elena.”

[NYCC '12] Guillermo Del Toro And Grant Morrison Announce Projects With Legendary Comics

Legendary Entertainment is ramping up their comics branch as announced today at NYCC. Guillermo del Toro detailed a Pacific Rim graphic novel which will serve as a prequel to his upcoming film. The story is apparently a “must” for those who want to see the film as it will build on character backstories. The graphic novel is written by the film’s scriptwriter, Travis Beacham, and will be released in three parts – covering.

Grant Morrison’s project involves a screenwriter who is given a final chance to save his downtrodden career. He struggles to write a script for a film called “Annihilator” (also the title of the graphic comic), featuring a sci-fi hero in a haunted prison. Check out all the details below. READ MORE

Godzilla Legendary 52012 Director Gareth Edwards Offers An Update (Kind Of) On The Next American Godzilla Film

The new American Godzilla isn’t dead, it’s just in chrysalis.

Monsters director Gareth Edwards is still is attached to direct the latest revamp of Godzilla for Legendary Pictures and Max Borenstein is rewriting David Goyer’s draft. Speaking at the Kapow Comic Book Convention recently Edwards offered, “It’s going great and I’m genuinely excited about it. We’re just working really hard with Legendary, who have been fantastic. Thomas Tull has just been an absolute pleasure and nothing like the experience they warn you about when you go to Hollywood. I can’t say much other than I hope that we’ll have some proper news soon. So you won’t have to wait too long at all.”

He added, “Well, we are in the worst part of the whole film making process which is waiting. We spent almost a year working on the script and on different drafts, going back and forth trading emails with the production company and everything. I had this lucky chance of writing with Mark and so I feel like, it’s a strange feeling, because at the same time I feel like a lot has happened, but at the same time I’m so deep in the project…”

Making his first appearance in 1954 (Gojira) Godzilla is a giant monster that lives in the sea that comes from the ocean to feed on mankind. In 1998, TriStar Pictures produced a remake set in New York City, directed by Roland Emmerich and starring Matthew Broderick.
