Livid (Livide) - 1

[Remember This?] When ‘Livide’ Was Supposed To Come Out?

September 2011. Two months after I started working here at Bloody-Disgusting, I found myself pulling news duty while Mr. Disgusting was reporting in from TIFF. I wasn’t very familiar with the way the festival worked at the time and had no idea that its Midnight Madness section was such a traditionally fertile ground to introduce great new horror films to the marketplace.

One film that had a lot of heat going into the fest – and not necessarily a lot of heat coming out – was Livide (now Livid) from Inside directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo. Their gory debut film had people primed for another bloodbath, but what they got was something much, much different.

From Mr. Disgusting’s (quite positive) review, “Livid is not going to make fans of Inside happy. In fact, I expect most of you to despise it with pure venom. But I implore you all to manage your expectations, shift your thinking, and go in with a clear mind. My hope is that you’ll find a place in your heart for this moody art house horror pic, one that’s sure to be trashed across the board.

‘Livide’ To Finally Become ‘Livid’ In American Remake

LividFeat406121 Livide To Finally Become Livid In American Remake

Inside directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s artful (and French) Livide (review) is getting an American remake. Because that’s what happens these days. David Birke (Kiss And Tell, Gacy) will be writing the script and one of the producers of The Strangers is onboard.

Per Deadline, “ French distributor SND Films is moving forward with an English language re-make of ‘Livid’, and they’ve set David Birke to write the script, and Doug Davison of Quadrant Pictures and Robert Léger to produce it. Davison’s genre credits include ‘The Strangers’ and the upcoming remake of Old Boy at Mandate Pictures.

The film, “revolves around a young home nursing aide who works in a remote country estate and discovers that her comatose patient may have hidden her fortune somewhere in the house. The nursing aide returns with her friends to search for the loot, and they become trapped in the house with an old woman who may not be as sick as she appeared.

Taste the Atmosphere in French Language Trailer for Livid!

Bloody Disgusting ready “Fabien” has a little Halloween treat for you as he discovered the French-language trailer for Inside directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s nightmarish Livid (review) is now online and brooding after the break.

‘Livid’s true gift is its creative madness, a film that’s drenched in imagery that will resonate with viewers for decades,” I stated in my review out of TIFF this past July. David Harley was also a huge fan stating that it “demands that its audience watch it through Fulci-tinted glasses as it weaves a fantasy horror tale heavy rooted in nightmare logic and Hammer aesthetics, a style that really hasn’t been replicated to this extent since the Godfather of Gore passed away in the 90′s.

Arriving in theaters next year from Dimension Films, the pic is a horror fairytale set during Halloween night when three youths decide to burglarize an old lady’s desolate house, but what awaits them is no ordinary house… Do NOT expect another Inside and I believe you’ll be pleasantly surprised. [News Bites] ‘Crow’ Creator Goes ‘Gothic,’ ‘Rabies’ Directors Meet ‘Satan,’ & ‘Livid’ Arrives in France

*Update: The fan Facebook page has been updated for Lionsgate’s Silent Hill: Revelation, which features a new clip and photos of Heather Mason, played by Adelaide Clemens, approaching Brookhaven Asylum. The sequel was shot under the direction of Michael J. Bassett earlier in the year at Central Tech School in Toronto on a rainy Friday 13th.

Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, the duo behind the Israeli zombie film Rabies, revealed to Twitch that they’re second film will take them head-to-head with the Devil. Satan Lives Within is “about this teacher at high school who we want to portray as the victim of a police interrogation for some really nasty crime, says Navot. “He’s the suspect in a very gruesome killing who goes free. And we thought for once it would be great to see the outcome of this kind of tragedy upon the suspect, as he tries to get his life back. He was a bible teacher and so this kind of accusation will no doubt be difficult to recover from.

In an interview with Guitar International, The Crow creator James O’Barr revealed a new project he’s developing for Dark Horse that’s also being primed for theaters. “I’m doing a book called ‘Gothic‘ for Dark Horse, and it’s a twelve issue series.” he explained. “It’s ‘Blade Runner’ meets ‘The Wizard Of Oz’, and we’re working on the film of that at the same time, with the same producers who did ‘The Crow.’ And I’m working on the screenplay and really heavily involved in the film. On this one, I’m picking all the actors and the artists for the soundtrack.” I like that he mentions the soundtrack as if we’re going back to the ’90s, which would be awesome. The Crow‘s album is still amazing (The Cure, NIN, Pantera, STP!)

While we wait to see what Dimension Films does with the film here in the States, Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s nightmarish Livid will be opening in French cinemas on December 7. But don’t get your hopes up as a Blu-ray is still not available for the filmmaker’s bloody Inside.

Lastly, we scored your first look at the official theatrical one sheet for The Divide (review), which Anchor Bay will release January 13. 2012. Directed by Xavier Gens (Frontier(s)), the pic is a graphic and violent, post-apocalyptic thriller in which nine strangers — all tenants of a New York high rise apartment — escape a nuclear attack by hiding out in the building’s bunker-like basement.

[Review] FF ’11: ‘Livid’ a Unique and Beautiful Vision!

I love a film that gets people talking, which is why Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s Livid is so fascinating. I enjoyed the atmospheric horror quite a bit, while stringer Brad McHargue wasn’t as impressed. Now, inside you’ll find the strongest opinion yet as Bloody’s David Harley was a big fan of the Inside directors’ latest.

Inside you’ll find Harley’s thoughts on the horror fairytale that’s set during Halloween night when three youths decide to burglarize an old lady’s desolate house, but what awaits them is no ordinary house…

[Review] FF ’11: ‘Livid’ Creepy, Yet Weak

Premiering at the TIFF before screening this past weekend at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, I was a mediocre fan (yet enjoyed it quite a bit) for Inside directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s follow-up nightmare Livid, which went with atmosphere over gore.

Bloody D stringer Brad McHargue reports in from FF where he stands firm with the opposing crowd: The film fails to overcome the weak script.

Inside you’ll find McHargue’s thoughts on the horror fairytale that’s set during Halloween night when three youths decide to burglarize an old lady’s desolate house, but what awaits them is no ordinary house…

[Interview] TIFF ’11: ‘Livid’ Directing Duo Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo

I’ll never, ever forget TIFF 2007. Actually, I can always rely on a group of my friends (largely dragged out by me) to recount, in detail, my ordeal that night. It all started with Mr. Disgusting himself, Brad Miska masterfully hyping up this little French horror film titled Inside. It supposedly made High Tension look uber-tame. How can any genre fan not get excited by that deliciously sick proposition?! I even went as far as to avoid the plot synopsis entirely. It would prove to be my fatal mistake. If you haven’t seen Inside already; it’s about a pregnant widow being tormented by a severely creepy woman who desperately wants take the unborn child for herself…by any means necessary. On a personal note, my wife was due to have our child in a few months. So, to say that this film had a profoundly traumatic effect on me could safely be labelled as the mother of all understatements. I vowed to hate the directors, Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo for life. To make a long story short, time heals all wounds and I now LOVE this film to no end.

So I was extremely excited to see their follow-up, Livid (review), a fairy tale-like supernatural horror film that could be described as Pan’s Labyrinth meets Hellraiser. It contains some of the creepiest moments I’ve seen all year. I had the honor and pleasure to chat with this duo at TIFF, where their film was making its world premiere.

TIFF ’11: Production Sketches from Horrific Fairy Tale ‘Livid’

Just yesterday the Midnight Madness blog featured the first ever interview with French directors Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury about their Inside followup, Livid, which premieres this month at the Midnight Madness portion of the TIFF.

Next up they’re teasing us with a trio of design sketches from the horrific fairy tale that’s set during Halloween night when three youths decide to burglarize an old lady’s desolate house, but what awaits them is no ordinary house…

Livid will be released here in the States by Dimension Films, who hopefully won’t butcher it like they did to Inside.

TIFF ’11: ‘Livid’ More Like Hammer Horror Than a Bloodbath

Back in 2007 I was among the first people ever to witness Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s masterpiece of gore, Inside, as it premiered at the TIFF. This month the French filmmakers return to TIFF and “Midnight Madness” with Livid, a horror fairytale set during Halloween night when three youths decide to burglarize an old lady’s desolate house, but what awaits them is no ordinary house…

The official TIFF blog interviews the duo who explain that Livid won’t be a bloodbath like Inside: “It is true that ‘Livid’ is less gory and extreme than ‘Inside’. We wanted to change registers,” they explain. “It reflects another aspect of genre that we also love. A more atmospheric cinema, more based on suggestion rather than demonstration. If we had to compare it, it is more old school fantastical more like HAMMER movies.” But that doesn’t mean there’s no blood at all: “We cannot change who we are and there are still some scenes that are quite violent!” they joke.

While it’s too soon to announce their next project, they do reveal that they are finishing writing a script right now and that to shoot in English is something that interests them quite a bit. Whatever their next project will be, they’re quite sure it will be in English.

TIFF ’11: Astounding ‘Midnight Madness’ Lineup Revealed!

While most people vacation during the holidays, my own person break (that I work intensely through) is every September when I fly up to Canada for the annual Toronto International Film Festival, which always plays host to an amazing array of genre premieres (remember High Tension, All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, REC 2, Inside, Martyrs and even Frontier(s)?) through its illustrious “Midnight Madness” sidebar.

Running from September 8-18, this year is no exception as TIFF will play host to some outrageous premieres: Inside directors Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo return with the world premiere of Livid; A Horrible Way to Die duo (writer Simon Barrett and director Adam Wingard) return to the fest with the world of their home invasion slasher You’re Next; Ben Wheatley is going to shock the thousands of audience members with Kill List; lastly comes an out of left field shocker from Bobcat Goldthwait entitled God Bless America (featuring the Carrie-esque phot released the other night. We were asked to remove this image is it’s “not representational” of the film).

Check out the full list of ten films, and don’t forget that TIFF will also be presenting Twixt, Melancholia and The Skin I Live In.

If Dimension F*cks Us Again, I’m Going to Be ‘Livid’

I’m still bitter with rage that the Weinstein Company and Dimension Extreme released an edited down version of the French gorefest Inside on DVD (cut to make Blockbuster happy). Even more shameful is not having a Blu-ray/HD version of the film to put its stunning cinematography on full display.

Well, it’s time to hang your head in disappointment as Dimension scored the rights to Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s Inside followup, Livide (Livid), which I can only assume they’ll hold locked up in their vault for several years before butchering it to shreds (for no apparent reason). I put the challenge to them to prove me wrong.

Livid is a horror fairy tale set on Halloween night, when three youths decide to burglarize an old lady’s desolate house, which turns out to be no ordinary abode.

This seriously bugs me. The only way to make me happy would be to re-release the UNCUT version of Inside alongside it.

Fresh Look at ‘Inside’ Director’s ‘Livide’ in Mad Movies Magazine!

Bloody Disgusting reader ‘Usman H.’ just tipped us off to a second French magazine feature (“Mad Movies”) on Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s Livid, their bloody follow-up effort to their mind-blowing Inside. The article is unfortunately in French (maybe one of you guys are able to read and sum up?), but it does feature a slew of new haunting imagery, and a super creepy old woman.

Also, inside you can watch two making-of featurettes that go behind-the-scenes of filming back in 2010.

It’s young Lucy’s first day as a trainee in-house caregiver. She visits Mrs Jessel, an old woman who lies in cerebral coma, by herself, in her large desolate house. Learning by accident that Mrs Jessel, a former dance teacher of repute, supposedly possesses a treasure somewhere in the house, Lucy and friends William and Ben decide to search the house in the hope of finding it. At night, they get into the house, which reveals itself to be increasingly peculiar. Their hunt for Mrs Jessel’s treasure leads them into a horrifying supernatural series of events that will change Lucy forever…
