Pick Of The Week: ‘Creepy’ #7

I’m so f*cking sick of hearing “horror is dead”. Do people honestly believe this? I know not everyone is quite so querulous, but to those people who believe that horror is a dying breed, you are either completely ignorant, or you have some impossibly high standards set for creators, and you should probably just write something yourself. Do you even pay attention to the books/movies that are being released? Every week I am overwhelmed by the incredible amount of horror stories out there, and to choose only one for my Pick of the Week becomes more and more difficult. I’m not saying that every horror title written is worth a read that would be a lie. Some are unintelligible, trite, nonsensical, but maybe instead of whining you should expose yourself to the incredible modern horror works that are out there. Rant over. Here is my pick of the week.

[REVIEW] A Shakin’ Good Time: ‘Kill Shakespeare’ Vol. 1

What do ‘Fables’, ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”, and ‘Kill Shakespeare’ all have in common (other than being awesome)? They force differing literary worlds to collide into a single universe, watching mayhem ensue as their characters mingle with one another. The idea behind ‘Kill Shakespeare’ is quite simple yet genius, placing Shakespeare’s greatest heroes and most heinous villains in the same world to duke it out. The story is not a mere retelling of the plays, but rather it weaves entirely new twists and turns into the Shakespeare universe.

Their first venture into comics, co-creators Anthony Del Col and Conor McCreery have created a wonderful realm making Shakespeare’s poetics accessible to people without English Literature degrees. Del Col and McCreery have written an audacious tribute to Billy S. all while never taking their tongues out of their cheeks. ‘Kill Shakespeare’ brings together some of the most infamous characters in English Literature for an epic action adventure that puts ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ to shame. COMICS TO FEAST ON: Week Of September 28th 2011

Well boils and ghouls, this is the final week of The New 52 #1s. It’s been a very exciting month and for the most part it’s been pretty easy to tell which of DC’s new titles will be sticking around. But, this is a big week for the “dark” releases! DC’s new books are selling like hot cakes (whatever that mean), so make a pull list if you don’t already have one!

Obviously there are loads of other comics coming out this week from other publishers, but in honor of such a milestone event, most of the books in this week’s COMICS TO FEAST ON are from DC’s New 52 lineup. Now I know you won’t be buying all 52 new series so let us know which books you can’t wait for!

With the ever-increasing number of books coming out between the tie-ins, the crossovers, and the new series, we’ve got to limit our list of comics for the week somehow. Rather than focus on every major comic hitting the shelves I’ll narrow it down to ten books that stand out from the rest. Whether you’ve been into comics since you were a young’un, or you’re new to the game, I’m here to help you decide which books to read. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Justice League Dark’ #1

Milligan has gained quite the loyal fan base with his work on the ‘Hellblazer’ hero, John Constantine, over at Vertigo. Now Milligan spreads his seed into a totally different universe, placing an altered version of Constantine on a team of misfits. This strange new team, known as ‘Justice League Dark’, serves to deal with the supernatural business that the regular heroes just can’t handle. The team is comprised of some of the most lovable, albeit minor, characters in the DCU. Aside from Constantine, the JLD team includes of Deadman, Mindwarp, Madame Xanadu, Shade the Changing Man, Enchantress, and Zatanna. With such an incredible cast of supernatural characters, JLD looks to win over the hearts of horror fans. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Batwoman #1

J.H. Williams III is an extremely unique and thought-provoking artist making him stand out among the many who illustrate superhero comics today. His art is so distinct because of the imaginative design work making for mind-tripping pages that you will not find anywhere else. His artwork really leaves you baffled as to how he could possibly imagine such a layout in his mind. After his collaborative work on the character with Greg Rucka, J.H. Williams III now tries his turn at scripting Batwoman and I couldn’t be more excited to have her back. The series was supposed to begin earlier this year, however DC pushed it back in order to make it a part of the new DCU. Finally, after months of wondering, the wait is over. Batwoman will without doubt be the most unusual looking book of the New 52, and this first arc kicks off a horror story bringing Batwoman full-fledged into a dark psychological world. COMICS TO FEAST ON: Week Of September 14th 2011

This week marks the second coming of DC’s New 52! Last week the anticipation finally ended and we can rest assured knowing that there are great comics coming out of the initially mixed-emotion reboot. Highlights from last week’s crop were Swamp Thing, Animal Man, Detective Comics, Action Comics, and Batwing. These bad boys are already selling out all over the world, even showing up on ebay going for more than a strand of Alex Trebek’s long lost moustache. It couldn’t be a better time to be a comic enthusiast.

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Animal Man’ #1

This week has without question been the toughest week to choose a single book for my staff pick. However, after reading countless blogs, articles, and watching numerous interviews about the New 52 there was one book that stood out above the rest. That book is none other than fellow Canadian Jeff Lemire’s Animal Man. Lemire has received a lot of attention over the past year with his Vertigo ongoing series, Sweet Tooth, and his collected edition of Essex County, nominated for Best Canadian Read. Now, Lemire ventures off into a darker, yet oddly vibrant world to bring back one of the most notorious characters in the DCU. Lemire promises that this is not only a superhero book, but it’s equally a horror story that really dives deep into the abyss of the DC universe. Animal Man is one of the first overtly deemed superhero/horror comics in a long time, and it’s already stolen the hearts of many. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Batman: Gates of Gotham’ #5

Did you really think I would have picked anything other than Gates of Gotham this week? Snyder and Higgins have been working to shape this series from the very first issue, and almost every page feels like it’ll hold some relevance in the end. The secret of ‘The Architect’ is out, the Bat-family knows who he is and his devious plans, now all that’s left to do is bash his face in and turn him over to Gordon. The ghost of Gotham’s past has reared its ugly head, and despite the corrupt history, Batman is trying control something that he knows is way larger than himself. The creative team has done wonders to bring fans a memorable Batman story leading into the new reboot, and now that Gotham City’s dark history is in the open, the future of Batman is looking brighter than ever. Chub Of The Day: Rucka’s Kick Ass ‘The Punisher’ #2 Preview!

The Punisher has gone through far too many changes over the past few years (including films), with few writers remembering that Frank Castle is a simple enough man. Luckily for us, Greg Rucka has returned to the Marvel mainstream to deliver a scary, dark, and killer new Punisher series that will absolutely kick your face in. The first issue set up this mysterious new Punisher as a quiet man, a ruthless man, a man with nothing left to lose. Rucka has stated that, at least for the first few issues, he doesn’t want any big arcs to start, but rather he will focus on the character of Frank Castle and give new readers a chance to jump in every issue. Rucka is one of the best in the crime comic business and this is the perfect place for new readers to find out what Frank Castle is all about. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘The Walking Dead’ #88

Before the big zombie craze, before World War Z, before Frank Darabont quit the TV series, Robert Kirkman was working hard to bring a certain air of intelligence to the big zombie apocalypse. To this day there remains to be a zombie comic that comes close to The Walking Dead; it’s the Night of The Living Dead of comic books, if you will. Rick Grimes has been through a literal hell and still, after all he’s been through he manages to maintain the will to survive. If I’m ever caught in any sort of end of the world scenario, I will model my behavior after this man (so what if he’s nuts). It’s been almost a decade of TWD, and Kirkman is not showing signs of wearing down anytime soon. Of all the horror comics out there today, of all the zombie literature, this one will always have a spot at the top. Read on for the skinny…

Was the really any other option for this week? This is it Bat-fans, the culmination of Snyder’s hard and brilliant work over the past few months. Oh, and it’s also the final f*ckin’ issue of Detective Comics before the big reboot. Whether you’re excited for the New 52 or skeptical, it’s undeniable that this is a landmark issue in Batman history. Snyder has been building and building in this arc to reveal how heartless Commissioner Gordon’s son has become after years of living in the shadow of others. No doubt this issue will tie into the new series come September, so don’t miss this extra-size finale to Snyder’s epic Batman story. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘The Punisher’ #1

I could have picked about five books being released on August 3rd as my staff pick this week, but lucky for you I was finally able to narrow it down to Greg Rucka’s new Punisher ongoing series. The Punisher has had his fair share of ups and downs over the years, often being treated as a character whose only purpose is to slaughter mobsters, ignoring the fact that he’s simply a man who lost everything he ever loved. Finally, Frank Castle is being placed in the right hands. Rucka has been out of the mainstream comic industry for about a year, and it’s been even longer since he’s dipped his pen in some Marvel ink. When it comes to crime comics that offer an in depth character analysis and a realistic approach to superheroes, Greg Rucka’s talent that is second to none. Expect some dark, gritty and grimy street level drama mixed in with flashes of ultraviolence. After all, somebody’s gotta take care of the thugs while the rest of the heroes are off fighting Fear Itself. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PULL & HOLD: August 3rd, 2011

Welcome to the weekly previews for August 3rd, 2011 here at Graphic Content! Let me preface this week by saying that there are A LOT of good comics coming out this week. Though every week has it’s highlights, I believe this is the best of the summer with several books by Snyder, the start of Spider Island, and the second to last Flashpoint issue! Get ready for some time indoors this week because there are way too many books for you spend you days running around outside in the sun like a loser.

The truth is everyone would read all the books if they had the time and money, but in reality most of us don’t. Here you will find a little taste of some major comics being released each week, my take on them, and, as always, feels free to discuss below. Whether you have been into comics since you were a little one, or are new to the game, I’m here to help you decide which books are for you. GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ #666

New York City is about to be overrun with the biggest infestation ever, as spiders crawl all over the buildings, lurk in every corner, and swing through the busy streets. In Dan Slott’s SPIDER-ISLAND things get a little crazy when normal citizens gain spider-powers of their own, and Peter Parker must defend against a threat not only to the city, but to his very existence. If you’ve been reading Spider-Man since you were a little one (or watching the 90s cartoon), you’re in for a treat because this event brings back characters, both allies and villains, from across eras. We already have our beloved Venom back, but that’s only the beginning. So get ready because SPIDER-ISLAND is going to rock your world by bringing back the ENTIRE Spidey lineup. The wait is over boys and girls, SPIDER-ISLAND, one of the most anticipated events of the year, hits shelves this Wednesday. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Batman Gates of Gotham’ #3

It should come as no surprise that Snyder’s Gates of Gotham would be my staff pick of the week. While it seems at this point that this has become a formal practice at Graphic Content, I swear it hasn’t. We’ve been flattering Snyder and Higgins for weeks now, and they just won’t seem to let up. Week after week Snyder brings the goods, and the scary thing…he’s only getting better. Gates of Gotham drags the entire Bat-gang on a wild ride into the past in order to explore Gotham’s criminal origins. Like any great cold case, the team is quickly discovering the mystery is far grander than they could have imagined, and it’s going to take a lot more than some simple detective work to solve it. Snyder and Higgins are giving fans what may just be the best final Batman story before Dick gives up the cowl and returns to his roll as Nightwing in September. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Green Lantern’ #67

Green Lantern has been an unstoppable force in the DC Universe over the past few years, and it’s all thanks to one man, Geoff Johns. Although Batman would likely win in a popularity contest, it’s undeniable that Green Lantern has progressed leaps and bounds to become one of the most recognizable super heroes in comics today. The War of the Green Lanterns arc began as somewhat of a disappointment to GL fans, failing to live up to the standards of Blackest Night (which I will get to shortly) and Brightest Day. However, last month’s issue ended with such a twist, even M. Night Shyamalan would be proud. This issue not only concludes the arc, but also marks the final chapters of Green Lantern before the big reboot. Geoff Johns will undoubtedly be pulling out all the stops for this one, and at such a milestone for Hal Jordan, how could you pass this up? Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Dark Tower: The Gunslinger – The Battle of Tull’ #2

Since the very first issue was released as a prequel to Stephen King’s legendary series, fans and critics have not been able to praise the Dark Tower comics enough. Although nobody thought it was possible to capture King’s elegant suspenseful writing, the creative team behind the Dark Tower comics has managed not only to live up to the novels, but surpass what anyone thought was possible. Very few books out there today are able to maintain the same grace and poise as the Dark Tower. The creative team behind the series somehow manages to pull off suspenseful storylines arc after arc, never failing to add something new to the melting pot. Peter David’s writing, especially the narration, is so eerie, and so perfectly post-apocalyptic that it seems to dissolve into the darkness of the illustrations themselves. The combination of western, fantasy, and horror, is not something you are likely to find anywhere else on the shelves today (well maybe in King’s books). Read on for the skinny…
