GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘American Vampire’ #16

It’s getting harder and harder to find a vampire story, whether in literature, film, or comics, that depicts the bloodsuckers in such a way that maintains their ferocity and ere of mystery. By now it’s even become cliché to hate on the Twilight series, and outright boring to read another rip on the sparkling vampires. It seems as though many writers don’t even care about vampire lore, but care only about the latest trend in literature to make a name for themselves. Luckily there are people like Scott Snyder who bring a sense of novelty to the vampire genre helping to continue the legacy of the most infamous of creatures. Maybe it’s best we leave our hatred for Twilight behind and start focusing on the true face of modern monsters, American Vampire. The creative team of Snyder and Albuquerque bring you an absolutely jaw dropping tale about vampires and the real horrors of living in a world with them. Snyder and Albuquerque bring vampire folklore of old into the modern era, making for one of the best horror comics on the shelves today. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Batman: Gates of Gotham’ #2

A month ago Gates of Gotham #1 was my pick of the week, and I see no reason to change that this month. It should come as no surprise to say that Gotham is one of the darkest and most corrupt cities in the entire DC universe. Somewhere in the past, a heavy shadow fell over Gotham, inviting sinister villains to lurk in the darkness. This shady and enigmatic past is exactly where Snyder and Higgins (Detective Comics) are going in the already acclaimed mini-series, Gates of Gotham. Snyder and Higgins work their magic once more to take Bat-fans on a wild goose chase into the past of Gotham, before it was overcast with shadows and run by the criminally insane. As this will be one of the last times Dick wears the Batman cowl, there’s absolutely no reason for anyone to ignore this Bat-book. Read on for the Skinny…

WHY NOT REVIEW: Lonmonster – ‘Green Lantern’

I know that I’m a bit late on the review front for Green Lantern and I’m sure most of you reading this have already read several reviews declaring how abysmal the Green Lantern film is. Now, I’m not here to tell you it’s a great film that truly captures the essence of Oa and the character of Hal Jordan, most simply because that would be a lie. Although the storyline is riddled with problems, Blake Lively’s acting is absolutely brutal, and many characters are underused, the film still manages to entertain despite the obvious problems. It’s clear that we are now living in the age of 3D and CGI films, and it’s even clearer that those were the focal point of this film. Green Lantern may not be a masterfully written screenplay, but it sure as hell is enjoyable to watch. Read on for the skinny…

CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – “X-Men” Issue #13

With the incredible amount of X-Men titles on the stands nowadays, it seems an incredibly daunting task to figure out which ones are worth reading. Although a lot has gone down for Cyclops and the gang in the past few years, nothing has been exceedingly noteworthy for Xavier’s (graduated) students. It’s not because the books aren’t good, or because there’s a lack of suspense, rather it’s because the X-Men always seem to live in their own little X-bubble, ignoring much of what is happening in the rest of the Marvel Universe. However, this all seems to be changing little by little, and it’s thanks to books like this. Yost and company (there are way too many names on the cover to list them all) have done a great job in this arc to reincorporate the X-Men back into the Marvel Universe. The First to Last story provides nostalgia for the past while still tying into current X-Men trends, offering a perfect mix of old and new. So if you’re wondering which X-titles to read on a monthly basis, this is one of them. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC COLUMNS: Analyzing The DC Reboot – Lonmonster

Screw character rebirths, let’s reboot the entire universe! No characters are safe, no series will continue, run for the hills, this is an all out massacre of the entire DC catalog! As I’m sure you know, DC Comics has recently announced that, after the summer, all of their series will come to a close of some sort or another. DC plans to relaunch 52 brand spankin’ new books from issue #1, offering a crap-load of fresh story lines, new origins for some, and hundreds of modern costumes. Though our beloved heroes and events will lose much of their historic values, this DCU reboot probably isn’t a bad thing at all.

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – “Green Wake” Issue #3

Every once in a while a book comes along that you pick up and think, man I wish I’d thought of this story, well my friends, Green Wake (Interview) is one of those. Two up and comers from Image Comics, Kurtis J. Wiebe (“The Intrepids”) and Riley Rossmo (“Proof”), bring you one of the weirdest debut comics of the year. Green Wake is dark, gritty, confusing and comparison can easily be drawn to the surrealist master, David Lynch. As such an odd series, it’s really no wonder it has given rise to some mixed reviews, receiving both praise and criticism from readers (really, reviews are all over the place). In Green Wake, Wiebe and Rossmo bring you into an ethereal world set alongside a suspenseful murder-mystery storyline, leaving you with an uncomfortable feeling in your gut. Whether you’ll love it or hate it, Green Wake is one book that deserves some attention. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – “Flashpoint: Batman – Knight of Vengeance” Issue #3

Despite all the changes that Batman has undergone in his lifetime, his moral code has always been the one thing that remained steadfast. Whether it’s Bruce Wayne or Dick Grayson wearing the cowl, Batman has never broken his one rule: “no killing”. But in Flashpoint, where “everything you know will change in a flash”, it seems that along with Gotham, there has been a major shift in Batman’s morality. For three issues only, the dream team of Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso (100 Bullets) come together again to give readers the Batman they’ve always wanted, darker, grittier, older, and more bad-ass than ever before (who thought that was possible?). The team already has an Eisner Award under their belts, and Azzarello’s graphic novel, Joker, ranks up there with the best Batman stories. Azzarello has proven his masterful ability to create some of fantastic noir worlds in comics, and this book should be no exception. Flashpoint: Batman – Knight of Vengeance is one Flashpoint tie-in that you won’t want to miss. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Venom’ Issue #3

Changing a character’s guise has always been a much debated issue in comic books, especially so when it involves one of the most popular villains of all time. From the very moment Marvel released its plan to overhaul the character of Venom, fans have been extremely skeptical as to his new look. Although the series is merely two issues deep, many qualms have already been settled; Remender and Moore have proven that they can re-create the symbiotic suit, and do it damn well. The team has reinvented the character, giving readers a new look into the entity that is Venom. Flash Thompson, the symbiote’s newest host, struggles to keep his mind and his body from being completely taken over by the black space goo, and from the looks of it, our beloved venom, along with his snake-like tongue and gaping maw, will be returning this issue. GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK: Lonmonster – ‘Batman: Gates Of Gotham’ Issue #1

Both Snyder and Higgins are rising stars at DC comics. Snyder is most famous for being the creator/writer of the widely praised Vertigo imprint, American Vampire. Here, the two team up to explore the history of Gotham, where it all went wrong, and the origins of its grimy underbelly. Based on their previous works, Gates of Gotham should be a fresh and original Batman mystery with lots of hooks to keep you reading. Snyder and Higgins have held strong in order to keep the majority of the plotline secret (it is a mystery story after all). However, they have alluded to several thematic elements which they plan to explore throughout the five-issue run. Read on for the skinny…

GRAPHIC CONTENT PICK OF THE WEEK – ‘Flashpoint’ Issue #1

As with any major event in the DC universe, it’s generally a given that there will be many tie-in issues. We saw with Blackest Night and Brightest Day just what Geoff Johns is capable of, how he can weave his magic storytelling abilities across worlds. However, Flashpoint is absolutely massive. Along with Johns’ five-issue series there will be fifteen other mini-series and various one-shots to accompany Barry Allen on his journey into a strange tomorrow. While Johns’ will not write every issue, as Chief Creative Officer of DC, he’ll likely oversee the entire project. With the tagline “Everything will change in a flash”, how could you possibly pass this up? Ready on for the skinny…

Getting Started: Reading Horror Novels

Have you ever wanted to read horror novels but been utterly overwhelmed by the amount out there? Or maybe you are just a film buff and never even thought of venturing into the world of horror literature? Or maybe you’re a fan of Stephen King but other than that you don’t really know how anyone could compare? If you want to get started reading horror novels, read on, and let’s see where to start with horror novels.

Unlike most horror fans, I hated, hated, hated, horror films when I was younger. Not because they were too scary, but because I thought they were hilarious and unintelligible. I thought how could anyone be scared of this nonsense. I know, blasphemy, right? Then a friend of mine introduced me to horror novels, and before I knew it, I fell head over heals in love with all things horror. At first, I too was bewildered at the amount of horror works out there that I never knew existed, and it took me years of schooling and reading to figure out what I liked. There’s something about reading horror that you just don’t get from films. The silence that surrounds you as you read through the pages, the gory descriptions are all for you to imagine, and experiencing the text all by your lonesome adds a whole new level to the fear.
