[Slamdance '13 Review] Cultish Thriller ‘Jug Face’ A Biazzare And Creepy Slow-Burn

Under the radar and premiering at the Slamdance Film Festival is a new Lucky McKee production. The director fo May produces Chad Crawford Kinkle’s indie thriller about a backwoods community who worship “The Pit.” Starring The Woman‘s Lauren Ashley Carter and Sean Bridgers, the latest Moderncine production delivers yet again.

If anything, Jug Face fits into the world of May,” I state in my review. “Although someone else directs the pic, it feels much like a Lucky McKee film. Knowing this, fans should expect an insanely bizarre and creepy slow-burn with a lot of good ideas, and precise execution. It also harbors the lesson: don’t fuck with the pit…

[BD Review] Cultish Thriller ‘Jug Face’ A Creepy Slow-Burn

Moderncine is a company that should receive more praise than it gets. They’ve become the model for consistency, delivering a flurry of well made independent films over the past few years (including The Woman, Offspring and Ghoul). The 2013 Slamdance Film Festival played host to the world premiere of Jug Face, a cultish thriller from producer Lucky McKee and director Chad Crawford Kinkle.

The pic, which re-teams The Woman stars Lauren Ashley Carter and Sean Bridgers, follows a large backwoods community who live their lives by worshipping a pit. The pit is their God, and apparently one that is very real. There’s a treaty in place, where a semi-shaman, played by Bridgers, is given a vision to sculpt the “next” sacrifice on a jug. Said face is to be executed to the pit. Failure to comply makes the put angry, and hell ensues. You get the idea.

Jug Face feels really small, in a good way, and captures the essence of this tiny group of worshippers. It’s aesthetically similar to other Moderncine movies; it’s a look that gives the film quality and technical shows expertise. Although, it’s carried by strong performances, and a few explicate shots of gore.

If anything, Jug Face fits into the world of May. Although someone else directs the pic, it feels much like a Lucky McKee film. Knowing this, fans should expect an insanely bizarre and creepy slow-burn with a lot of good ideas, and precise execution. It also harbors the lesson: don’t fuck with the pit…

AFM ’11: Market Art for Lucky McKee’s ‘The Woman’

AFM 11: Market Art for Lucky McKees The Woman

We scored some new art for Lucky McKee’s The Woman that’s being used for international sales at this ongoing AFM in Santa Monica.

The story follows a successful country lawyer who captures and attempts to “civilize” the last remaining member of a violent clan that has roamed the Northeast in the wild for decades, thereby putting the lives of his family in extreme jeopardy.

Starring Pollyanna McIntosh, Sean Bridgers and Angela Bettis, the film prompted furious debates and walkouts during its world premiere in the Park City at Midnight program at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Reports surfaced of people becoming sick while watching the graphic scenes and one irate Sundance audience member went so far as to say THE WOMAN “ought to be confiscated, burned. There’s no value in showing this to anyone.” Whether a “wonderfully bizarre tale” or an “inhumane degradation of women,” you’ll have to decide for yourself. READ MORE

[Interview] Writer/Director Lucky McKee Talks About ‘The Woman’ and His Take On “White-Knight Syndrome”!

PollyLand101311 [Interview] Writer/Director Lucky McKee Talks About The Woman and His Take On White Knight Syndrome!

The controversy around Lucky McKee’s The Woman has certainly helped raise the film’s profile, but along with notoriety come misconceptions. In a way it seems as though it’s regarded as something of a tough sell, some people are afraid to see it in the same way they’re afraid to see Human Centipede 2. And that’s a shame.

The reality is, the two films couldn’t be more different. The Woman contains none of the graphic self-indulgence of this fall’s other most feared movie. Sure, there’s a few gruesome moments but The Woman is a rock solid independent movie more concerned with emotional terror, the repercussions of abuse, feminism (the accusations of misogyny are beyond myopic) and the nature of civility versus our feral instincts. It’s also an engaging story with real characters. I can’t stress enough how much this movie doesn’t even really deserve the controversy directed at it. It should instead be recognized on its merits, which are plenty.

I spoke with Lucky McKee on the phone last week to talk about the film, its soundtrack and its now legendary reaction at Sundance.

Personally, from what I’ve seen from the trailers and what I’ve read about it, this song and the movie are complete opposite ends of the spectrum. That being said, it only intrigues me more. I REALLY want to see this movie!
