Full Length ‘Europa Report’ Trailer Teases Mysterious Horror Near Jupiter

The official trailer for Sebastian Cordero’s sci-fi horror flick Europa Report reminds me a lot of the sci-fi movies I’d rent on VHS around 1996-97. Which is to say it has a little bit of that low budget Event Horizon vibe.

Penned by Philip Gelatt, the film tells of “a group of astronauts, handpicked from around the world, who make the arduous journey to Jupiter’s frigid, glacial moon Europa in search of extraterrestrial life. The only thing more intimidating and unpredictable than the trip itself is what the team will encounter upon arrival…” The film stars District 9‘s Sharlto Copley alongside Michael Nyqvist, Daniel Wu, Anamaria Marinca, Christian Camargo, and Karolina Wydra.

It opens June 27th on VOD and in theaters Aug 2nd from Magnet Releasing. READ MORE

Return The Tape With This ‘V/H/S/2′ Poster!!

The poster for V/H/S/2 has emerged and it’s a nice, solid classy look for the film! It keeps the skull theme from the original but adds an air of old-school menace. By the way, as someone who really liked most of the original film, I’ve got no problem telling you that V/H/S/2 is much, much better. It’s tighter, shorter, leaner and a rock solid viewing experience.

Acquired by Magnet Releasing out of Sundance as S-VHS, V/H/S/2 will be arriving on VOD platforms June 6 with a theatrical rollout set for July 12. In the film directed by Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, Gareth Evans, Eduardo Sanchez, Gregg Hale, Jason Eisener and Timo Tjahjanto, “Inside a darkened house looms a column of TVs littered with VHS tapes, a pagan shrine to forgotten analog gods. The screens crackle and pop endlessly with monochrome vistas of static—white noise permeating the brain and fogging concentration. But you must fight the urge to relax: this is no mere movie night. Those obsolete spools contain more than just magnetic tape. They are imprinted with the very soul of evil.

From the demented minds that brought you last year’s V/H/S comes V/H/S/2, an all-new anthology of dread, madness, and gore. This follow-up ventures even further down the demented path blazed by its predecessor, discovering new and terrifying territory in the genre. This is modern horror at its most inventive, shrewdly subverting our expectations about viral videos in ways that are just as satisfying as they are sadistic. The result is the rarest of all tapes—a second generation with no loss of quality.

What was your favorite segment in V/H/S? Which director has you most excited for V/H/S/2? READ MORE

[Interview] Director Marcel Sarmiento On ‘The ABC’s Of Death’ And His Favorite Onscreen Death Of All Time!!

Magnet officially releases The ABCs of Death on various On Demand platforms (Cable VOD, iTunes, Amazon, Xbox Zune, Playstation Market, VUDU and Google Play) TODAY January 31st with a limited theatrical run set for March 8. The film has 26 directors, so to celebrate 26 different websites are running exclusive interviews with the film’s directors! If you do some poking around (Badass Digest, Slashfilm, HitFix, Latino Review etc…) you can find some of the others. Eventually all 26 interviews will be collected at the The ABCs of Death Tumblr.

I’m particularly excited about my interview. Director Marcel Sarmiento (the underrated Deadgirl) has fashioned one of the true highlights of the film with his segment, “D is for Dogfight.” It’s a truly incredible bit of visual storytelling, a complete narrative contained within a beautifully shot 5 minute sequence without any dialogue.

‘V/H/S’ Actually ON VHS In The UK!! US Version Forthcoming!!

Magnolia released V/H/S (write your reviews) on DVD and Blu-ray this week (along with iTunes and VOD etc…). But there’s another, older – and titular – format on which the film can be seen. Actual VHS tape! Total Film has the rundown on the UK release (via Momentum films) of the film on its “intended” format.

The logistics of such an exercise were far from easy, and by all accounts Momentum Pictures had to undertake considerable research to get big-box-sized tapes made up which include many nods to the glory days of rental stores. Getting hold of these tapes won’t be easy though. Only 300 numbered copies have been manufactured and Momentum are promising a unique V/H/S event in January at which lucky fans will be able to get hold of them. Further details will emerge on the Total Film VHS Hub.

V/H/S comes from filmmakers Adam Wingard (You’re Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You’re Next, Dead Birds, Red Sands), Ti West (The House of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the Dead), and Radio Silence.

[BD Review] ‘Meeting Evil’ Challenges Indifference With Extreme Situations

If you asked someone on the street what they believe horror is, they more than likely won’t tell you bad customer service, jerk bosses, and cheating spouses. They more than likely won’t tell you a picture perfect life is having two kids and a white picket fence. Meeting Evil, directed by Chris Fisher, delves into modern day horrors like the above and puts a twist on them. Based on the 1992 novel by Thomas Berger, Meeting Evil follows the story of John Felton, an average every day guy living in suburbia. On the same day John gets fired from his real estate job, a stranger named Richie shows up at his door and takes him on a murderous joyride through town. READ MORE

Hi-Res Domestic Poster For [REC] 3 Genesis Is Familiar, Still Great

Rec 3 Genesis Banner 42312 Hi Res Domestic Poster For [REC] 3 Genesis Is Familiar, Still Great

[REC]3 Genesis finds Paco Plaza largely dispensing with the found footage aesthetic of the series and going much broader. I still haven’t seen the film, and while Mr. Disgusting thinks it falls a hair or two short of the prior two entries, I’m not too worried. All of the teasers, trailers and images actually have me kind of confident that I’ll like this thing. I’m not a die-hard fan of the series so maybe I’m just responding positively to the new aesthetic. This beautiful high-res poster kind of makes my point for me.

In the film, “Koldo and Clara are about to celebrate the most important day of their lives: their wedding. Everything appears to be running smoothly and the bride and groom and their families are enjoying a wonderful day; that is until some of the guests start showing signs of a strange illness. Before they know what’s happening, the bride and groom find themselves in the middle of a hellish ordeal, as an uncontrollable torrent of violence is unleashed on the wedding. Amidst the chaos, Koldo and Clara become separated and begin a desperate search for one another. What started off as an idyllic day quickly descends into a nightmare of the worst kind…

[Blu-ray Review] ‘Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil’

In what feels like an overcrowded sub-genre, Tucker & Dale Vs. Evilstands tall as a horror-comedy with dramatic irony that works and strong chemistry between its three principal actors. A play on clichés and conventions, Eli Craig and Morgan Jurgenson’s script focuses on a pair of bumbling rednecks (Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine) who rescue a co-ed (Katrina Bowden) after she bumps her head and her cannon-fodder friends that suspect the strangers are murderous kidnappers. [Blu-ray Review] ‘Troll Hunter’

America really doesn’t have much folklore and mythology. Yes, there’s Paul Bunyan, an overhyped gunslinger or two and bigfoot, but there’s not many fantastic elements to distinctly American campfire stories – the best ones we have stateside are based in Creole culture, not even our own. It’s a touch depressing to know that we’re too young of a country to have weaved any great cultural yarns while Europe is swimming in superstitious lore. The troll, a creature that’s no stranger to the screen, never really got its due before Troll Hunter came along. Mixing old-world charm with modern-day dark humor, the mockumentary approach works well for its Jurassic Park meets Men In Black angle.

‘Trollhunter’ Makes Larger Than Life Debut On Blu-ray In August

Everyone will believe it when they see it! Norwegian director Andre AEvredal (Future Murder) presents an “enormously entertaining” (Variety) look at a creature thought only to exist in fairy tales when Trollhunter is uncovered on Blu-ray Disc and DVD August 23 from Magnolia Home Entertainment under the Magnet label. Shot in vérité style in the vein of popular films like Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield, Trollhunter follows three Norwegian film students as they travel to the mountains to catch a real-life troll on camera, a creature whose existence has been covered up for years by the local government. Their persistence quickly pays off as they trail a shadowy poacher, leading them straight into the path of the menacing trolls and documenting every last second of this “Trollhunter’s” heroics.

“The coolest monster movie import since The Host” (FEARNet) and “the best `found footage’ movie ever” (Screen Junkies), Trollhunter is beautifully shot, offering awesome images of the titular monsters destroying the Norwegian countryside. The Blu-ray Disc and DVD are loaded with special features including a making-of featurette, deleted scenes, an HDNet special on the film and the international trailer.
