[TV] Guillermo Del Toro Making A “Monster” With HBO

Guillermo del Toro is partnering with HBO to bring Monster to life, per Deadline. While things are only just now entering the development stage, the series will be based on an 18 volume Japanese Manga by author Naoki Urasawa.

It sounds like Del Toro will co-write the series outline with Steven Thompson (“Dr. Who”, “Sherlock”). Thompson will then script the pilot and it’s planned that del Toro intends to direct it and set up the world (like Eli Roth did in “Hemlock Grove”).

The book “is about the worldwide search by a young doctor for the most evil sociopath that has ever lived. He is a 12-year old boy, and the doctor’s decision to save his life has unwittingly unleashed a Pandora’s Box that leaves the doc battling to stop a plot of mass genocide.

Del Toro will also be executive producer and Thompson co-executive producer, with Angry Films’ partners Don Murphy and Susan Montford executive producing with Exile’s Gary Ungar. “Monster” was originally set up at New Line, but the lengthy nature of the book dictated that it would be a better fit for TV.

Avril Lavigne Covers Nickelback’s “How You Remind Me”: Surprisingly, It’s Not That Bad

So, I’ll fully admit that I had a bit of a crush on Avril Lavigne for a while there. She’s pretty damn cute, she can play the guitar, and she’s got a feisty attitude that is rather appealing. Then she got engaged to Nickelback‘s Chad Kroeger. Every bit of attraction I had went right out the window.

But moving past my own personal demons, Lavigne has released a cover of the song “How You Remind Me”. It was recorded for the upcoming anime film One Piece Film Z, which is the twelfth film in an ongoing manga, TV series, and feature length film series. That series is the highest grossing anime in history.

Now, one would expect the song to be pretty awful (I know I thought that when I first heard about this). However, after listening to it, it’s actually not that bad. It’s an original take on the song, dropping the bro-rock feel and replacing it with a subtle piano and minimalistic guitars and drums. Check it out below and lend your thoughts. READ MORE

Dan Mazeau To Write The Very Previously Announced Adaptation Of ‘Bleach’

Bleach22212 Dan Mazeau To Write The Very Previously Announced Adaptation Of Bleach

Dan Mazeau, writer of the upcoming sequel Wrath Of The Titans, is now set to write the adaptation of Bleach for Warner Brothers.

Per Variety, “Warner Bros. has acquired live-action feature rights to Tite Kubo’s manga and anime property “Bleach,” which will be adapted by “Wrath of the Titans” scribe Dan Mazeau.
Peter Segal (“Get Smart”) will produce with an eye toward possibly directing.

What’s sort of odd is that the wording of the Variety article treats the involvement of Warner Brothers and Peter Segal as some kind of new development, when we actually reported this almost exactly two years ago.

The film will follow, “the adventures of Ichigo, a teenager who can see ghosts. When his family is attacked by a Hollow — a malevolent lost soul — Ichigo inadvertently absorbs the power to hunt Hollows. He then dedicates his life to protecting the innocent and helping tortured souls find peace.READ MORE

Is There A Film Left To Watch After All These ‘Priest’ Clips?

With all the clips released for Priest over the last few weeks, I don’t expect anything to be left to my imagination by the time I see it. Still, I’m curious to see whether Screen Gems is putting this out during the summer because a) they think it’s good and have faith in it or b) it’s a glorious train wreck they think audiences might eat up during Hollywood’s official “turn your brain off” season.

The new clip features Paul Bettany and Cam Gigandet fighting off newborn vampires. There’s a severe lack of Karl Urban in the film’s marketing, which strikes me as odd considering he’s probably the most marketable name in the cast. Screen Gems, if we’re going to be inundated with more clips, can I please see the future Judge Dredd in action? Is that too much to ask?

Priest – hitting theatres on May 13 – is set in an alternate world ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires. The story revolves around a legendary Warrior Priest (Paul Bettany) from the last Vampire War who now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church. When his niece (Lily Collins) is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on an obsessive quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He is joined on his crusade by his niece’s boyfriend (Cam Gigandet), a trigger-fingered young wasteland sheriff, and a former Warrior Priestess (Maggie Q) who possesses otherworldly fighting skills.

See Paul Bettany And His Killer Crucifixes In New ‘Priest’ Clip

The closer we get to Priest‘s release date, the more interested in it I become. I’m absolutely fascinated with Screen Gems putting a dark, genre-based action film out during the summer when they’ve traditionally released them in the early Fall and Winter months (maybe it’s not bad?), and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think some of the clips were at least “visually stimulating”. But the thing that piques my interest the most is that there’s an animated opening sequence done by Genndy Tartakovsky(!).

Screen Gems released a brand new clip today which, much like last week’s, shows us the frantic pace of the film’s action scenes. Paul Bettany killing vampire-like creatures with tiny crucifix daggers? Sure, why not.

Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service Vol 9 Out This May

Awhile back I mentioned the horror manga, Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service. I was interested in it just by the name and amazing cover art. I had to special order it at my comic book store and I was very pleased with the results. Kurosagi revolves on a high school club that deals with the dead and their last wishes. It has some trappings of japanese comics but it makes up for it by giving a unique story and gruesome imagery. I read volume eight and want to get the previous seven. Volume 9 is coming out this May, check this series out! More info after the break…
