[Interview] Michael Wandmacher (‘The Last Exorcism II’) On Composing Horror

It’s no secret that one of my biggest passions regarding horror is the score. The gore, violence, and atmosphere don’t nearly mean as much to me if there isn’t a solid score behind it. Some of the most terrifying scenes in horror can be attributed to the music hovering over the intensity.

That’s why I was thrilled when I was given the opportunity to interview composer Michael Wandmacher, who horror fans know from such films as Piranha, My Bloody Valentine, The Last Exorcist II, The Haunting In Connecticut 2: Ghosts Of Georgia, and much more. In this exclusive interview, Wandmacher talks what it means to score a horror film, the differences in scoring for film versus TV versus video games, and more. We also get to hear a bit about the score for the upcoming film Angry Little Gods, which stars genre favorite Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Cronos) and is directed by Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism).

Marvel Unveils ‘Once Upon a Time’ Graphic Novel Cover

A few weeks back, Marvel Entertainment and Disney-ABC Television announced that they would be releasing a graphic novel based on the hit show “Once Upon a Time”. If you haven’t seen the show, it’s pretty much “Fables” but not as dark and not as good. I can’t imagine how the graphic novel will compare to “Fables” seeing as it is known as one of the best comic series of all time, but time will tell. The graphic novel is plotted by series writer Dan Thomsen, co-written by Corinna Bechko, with artwork from Nimit Malavia, Vasilis Lolos, Mike Del Mundo, Mike Henderson and more.

The “Fables” cover (below) actually looks pretty damn good. The book is set for release this September. READ MORE

ComiXology Tries To Crash Again With 700 Free Marvel Comics: Round Two

You may recall a few weeks back when ComiXology ambitiously partnered with Marvel to give away over 700 free #1 issues. This time you have to sign up in advance before April 19th 11:59 PM on their special promo site. Why they don’t give away only a few books per day, I don’t know. So head on over, sign up, and grab as many as you can before the inevitable happens. READ MORE

Chris Cooper Will Be Norman Osborn In ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′

Marc Webb’s “Amazing Spider-Man 2″ keeps the villain casting decisions rolling, now adding in Chris Cooper as Norman Osborn, to star alongside Jamie Foxx as Electro and Paul Giamatti who is rumored to be Rhino. It is yet to be seen whether Cooper will dawn the Green Goblin garb, but at least they are setting it up for the future. Dane DeHaan has already been cast as Harry Osborn, and it was only a matter of time before they cast his father.

Also released this week were the first pictures of Spidey’s new costume, which you can check below. READ MORE

Marvel Brings ‘Amazing Spider-Man’, ‘Wolverine’, & ‘Captain America And…’ To An End

With Marvel NOW! fast approaching, it’s no surprise that Marvel is putting a stop to some of their longest running series, prepping for new versions of the books in the coming year. With the release of their December solicitations, Marvel declares that “Amazing Spider-Man,” “Wolverine,” and “Captain America And…” will all come to a close with 2012.

Don’t worry. There’s no doubt that both “Spider-Man” and “Wolverine” titles will be back on the shelves in January, they just might wear a shiny #1 instead of a #701. Either way, you’d do well to pick up “Amazing Spider-Man” #700 as it is a landmark issue for the hero. As CBR points out, the only real question is whether or not the book will still carry “Amazing” in the title, or if it will be dropped for something a little more hip. READ MORE

Tony Stark Advances ‘Iron Man 3′ Armor To Mark XLVII?!

A massive Iron Man 3 spoiler has made its way online via Latino Review who reveals that Tony Stark may have something special on his “mind”.

Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., has shown off quite a few different Iron Man armors between Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and The Avengers, now he’s (SPOILER) skipping ahead… by XXXIX generations.

The Iron Man 3 footage at the San Diego Comic-Con showed that Stark could summon the new armor piece-by-piece. It’s been revealed that this armor is to help Stark in battle against the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) by creating drones to fight side-by-side!

Says Latino Review: “The Extremis-enhanced bad guys under direction of Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin villain are going to be too much for Tony to handle on his own, so he thinks ahead, thinks big and has a plan. Tony’s about to go out and fight some bad guys when he mentions the Mark XLVII to Pepper Potts. Pepper asks what happened to the other forty and Tony just smiles.

From the cockpit of Mark XLVII Tony is able to control multiple armors in battle. We over here at LR have been vaguely aware of an action scene where Tony was going to control multiple Iron Man suits (presumably they look similar to distract his enemies as to the location of kill-able Iron Man Prime), but the number 40 seems…awesome. 40 Iron Men.

The film also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Rebecca Hall, Ashley Hamilton, James Badge Dale, and Guy Pearce.

Iron Man 3 opens May 3, 2013. READ MORE

Comic-Con 2012: Deadpool Finally Smart Talked His Way Into His Own Video Game

I can not put into words just how awesome and right on the money the press release I received for the newly announced Deadpool game is. It really embodies the doucheyness and “I’m so full of myself” nature of Deadpool himself. So if you head past the break I’ve included the entire thing, where yes Deadpool himself, tells us all about how freakin’ awesome he is. Also past the break you can check out a pretty hilarious awesome trailer where he basically does the same thing.

It’s Official: Marvel NOW! Relaunch (Updated)

As you may have heard much of the speculation yesterday, Marvel Comics announced that they will be relaunching their catalog under the banner, Marvel NOW! This is not to be confused with a full on reboot (as DC did), but rather a relaunch of the core franchise, offering new titles, renumbered books, and new character designs. The news began with the announcement of Jean Grey’s return to the Marvel U, and it exploded from there. So far Bleeding Cool and and Newsarama among other sites have discovered the following titles will be released: “Uncanny Avengers” written by Rick Remender, “X-Men” by Brian Bendis, and “Avengers” by Jonathan Hickman. I think we all knew Marvel was due for something big post “AvX”, and now you can rest easy. More titles and more information are sure to be announced shortly.

UPDATE #1: It has been reported that Marvel will stretch out the relaunch over a period of 5 months. One new book will be released or relaunched every week, beginning in October and going February 2013. There are a total of 22 titles. READ MORE

Remender Out, Bunn In On ‘Venom’

Marvel Comics announced today that scribe Rick Remender will be leaving Venom, and Cullen Bunn will be taking over full time beginning in August. Remender brought the black space goo back into popularity this past year, re-imagining Venom as government solider, Flash Thompson. While many fans were skeptical at first, Remender proved why he’s one of the best writers out there, delivering a kick-ass series that was utterly different from the 90s classic. This switch is a bittersweet one, as Cullen Bunn – who recently took over “Wolverine” – has been making a big name for himself. READ MORE

Why Not Review: The Avengers

We all know the initial hype that surrounded The Avengers. It was either going to be one the best comic book movie of all time, or another botched job like so many of its fallen brothers. The verdict is in, and not only is this one of the most amazing comic book movies of all time, it’s a nonstop, action packed, thrill ride of epic proportion. From start to finish, The Avengers is the kind of movie that will have entire audience on edge of their seats, enthralled by the story that unfolding, literally, in their face (3D). This is a film that Marvel has been building toward over the past few years, and it’s well worth the wait. The casting is perfect, Joss Whedon’s script and directing are second to none, and the special effects are…Avengerific. READ MORE

Now with the announcement at this weekend’s at Wondercon, Wood will be taking over both X-Men and Ultimate Comics X-Men beginning in June with X-Men #30 and Ultimate X-Men #13. This creative change will bode well for the X-Men books as Wood will undoubtedly give the franchise a well deserved shot in the arm.
