A major accomplishment in the treatment of vampire lore, 30 Days of Night Omnibus Vol. 2 continues its stride with this massive collection of four graphic novels into one edition. Somehow this beast of a book is impossible to put this down. The “30 Days of Night” series has become a staple of horror comic literature known for its gritty artwork and gripping storylines. ‘FEAR ITSELF’ Is a hard act to follow if you are series scribe Matt Fraction. After all, the series was a massive hit for publisher Marvel Comics all year long, taking the top spot of the monthly sales charts consistently all Summer. So now that it is all over; what’s next? Enter December 7th’s debut issue of “THE DEFENDERS”. If you remember Marvel Comics released several teaser photos back in August, but little was revealed about what their purpose was. In the latest issue of Marvel’s “FEAR ITSELF”, Bucky was dealt a possibly fatal blow by Sin, and one that was just as much a call to arms for the entire Uni as we will likely see. That being said it should come as no surprise that Steve Rodgers, Bucky’s closest friend, has now joined the war and lifted the shield once again. Couple that with the return of Thor from Asgard, and it looks as if the war will only be heating up in the coming months. In the past couple of years Marvel Comics has done very little to make their “True Believers” proud when it comes to their big Summer blockbuster story-lines. Ever since the sub-par “hit” that was “CIVIL WAR” the publisher has continually rolled out bummer after bummer, and rarely have they cashed in on the checks they had written before the titles saw the light of day (here’s looking at you “HOUSE OF M”). However, for all of their mistakes, the shortcomings, and the ridiculously large amounts of wasted cash thrown by the way of stories like “SEIGE”, Marvel Comics has once again renewed readers’ faiths this year thanks to Matt Fraction’s brilliant “FEAR ITSELF”. This week will mark the release of the third issue in the standalone title’s run, and beyond the break you can get a 6 page preview and all of my ramblings as to why you shouldn’t let this one pass you by.
