When terminally ill cancer patients get healthy after being bitten by bats in South America, the government conducts secret tests with human subjects to see if a virus can cure illness. Instead, it unleashes a swarm of bloodthirsty vampires out of the test subjects, which include death row inmates.
It follows a test pilot who winds up breaking the speed of light; when he puts down his craft, he discovers that he’s landed a bit late for supper — 96 years late. The companies are not seeking to remake an episodic movie, as the only big-screen version of the show did 25 years ago, but rather hope to build one continuing story line based on one or more episodes. It’ll be one director and one storyline.
The action adventure surrounds young Victor Frankenstein and his attempt to save his twin brother, Konrad, who falls gravely ill. Victor seeks out a mysterious old alchemist who sends Victor and his best friend Elizabeth on a dangerous quest to find three rare ingredients needed to create the Elixir of Life, a fabled serum that will give the drinker perpetual health. There are betrayals along the way and a love triangle between Victor, Elizabeth and Konrad.
The book is full of insider references involving Mary Shelley and her original “Frankenstein” novel, and sets up the subsequent storyline for that famous tale.
The story is about a man who awakens one morning with the crystal-clear realization that we are surrounded daily by the presence of aliens that are controlling society.
The interesting part of the story is that it was owned by the studio because it was used as the basis for the 1988 John Carpenter film They Live. In that film, aliens were discovered through the use of special glasses. None of that is being used here, and the film is not considered a remake.

Jocko Sims (pictured; Crash, White Space, Something Is Killing Tate) has joined the cast of Fox’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, opposite Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Kodi-Smit McPhee and Gary Oldman, Variety reports.
Fox has set the film for release on May 23, 2014. Matt Reeves replaced Rupert Wyatt, who had directed 2011’s franchise reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes, in October.
Produced by Chernin Entertainment, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is set in an apocalyptic future more than a decade after Rise of the Planet of the Apes, in which the ape population far exceeds humans. Script is penned by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver.

Twentieth Century Fox announced Wednesday that principal photography is underway on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Director Matt Reeves is already tweeting from set, having shared this awesome photo that promises the sequel will bring the horses well known from the original franchise!

I could be wrong about this (even though I believe the chance to be small), so let’s set up the terms of my potential punishment right away. If Cloverfield 2 ever happens, I will buy the first person to call me out on it a 6-pack of that Slusho stuff, should it actually exist.
Here’s the thing, JJ Abrams has moved on. He’s got Star Trek and effing Star Wars to deal with. Matt Reeves and Drew Goddard continue to find new and interesting projects, ones that expand their body of work, not replictae their past. Some people are clinging to hope in the form of this Abrams quote (via Playboy), “Part of me just wants to let [Cloverfield 2] go, though we’ve had a couple of discussions about cool ways to do it. I’m looking forward to seeing Pacific Rim this summer. It feels like there are some really big monsters coming down the pike that could inspire something we do.”
The key here is the first sentence. “Part of me just wants to let it go.” The rest is just polite noise. Cloverfield was the perfect project for these filmmakers at that time. It was new, original and innovative. It was a great one-off that didn’t have a lot of mythology to expand upon. 5, 6, and eventually 10 years later it’s just not necessary. There’s always the chance they could just farm out a sequel to a newer batch of filmmakers, but I get the feeling that they’re not even that interested in shepherding it. We’ve got our first behind the scenes look at Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, the sequel to Twentieth Century Fox’s 2011′s hit franchise reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
Matt Reeves is currently directing the sequel, which has already enlisted Jason Clarke, Keri Russell, and Gary Oldman playing some human characters with Judy Greer and Andy Serkis (and many others) playing the chimps. These photos from the Daily Mail cropped up after a shoot in the woods that presumably features both humans and chimps, since Russell and Clarke look normal and Serkis is wearing the mo-cap dots.

Gary Oldman has been cast as one of the leads in 20th Century Fox‘s Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. Per Deadline, he’ll be playing Dreyfus, leader of the human resistance after the apes have taken power.
The followup to Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is to be directed by Cloverfield and Let Me In‘s Matt Reeves.

If Rise of the Planet of the Apes wasn’t sweet enough, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes just kicked it up a notch.
Cloverfield and Let Me In helmer Matt Reeves has (correctly) been set to direct Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, the 20th Century Fox sequel to Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, reports Deadline. Reeves was atop the list to replace Rupert Wyatt, and the other names I’d heard were in contention were The Disappearance Of Alice Creed helmer J Blakeson, 28 Weeks Later helmer Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Take Shelter director Jeff Nichols, Pacific Rim helmer Guillermo del Toro, The Impossible helmer Juan Antonio Bayona and Looper helmer Rian Johnson.
Fox production president Emma Watts was in a spot when Wyatt exited (which Deadline revealed September 17), but they’ve gotten a good director here in Reeves, who last helmed the remake Let Me In. Reeves was also attached to helm The Twilight Zone movie at Warner Bros, as well as This Dark Endeavor, with Mean Creek writer/helmer Jacob Aaron Estes writing the script for Summit Entertainment. The studio fully expects to stay on track and make the May 23, 2014 release date that Fox announced in May.
Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver already turned in a script that is much liked by the studio and the film’s producer, Chernin Entertainment. It’s a natural extension of the first film, which grossed $483 million worldwide and seamlessly set up the apocalyptic sequel plotline.

Deadline reports that Reeves is atop the list, along with The Disappearance Of Alice Creed helmer J Blakeson, 28 Weeks Later‘ Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, Crazy Heart and Mud director Jeff Nichols, Pacific Rim helmer Guillermo del Toro, The Impossible helmer Juan Antonio Bayona and Looper helmer Rian Johnson.
Those directors will be meeting with Fox production president Emma Watts to fill the plum post that Wyatt exited. Wyatt is said to have been uncomfortable about making the May 23, 2014 release date that the studio announced in May.

With the release of The Cabin In The Woods looming next month, I met up with Drew Goddard (the film’s director and co-writer) in Hollywood this afternoon for a lengthy chat.
While 95% of our conversation naturally centered around Cabin, we briefly touched on the status Cloverfield 2 and his screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse. For those who need a refresher on the latter, it’s based on the book by Daniel H. Wilson which explores the fate of the human race following a robot uprising.

Invictus, The Book of Eli and Sherlock Holmes scribe Tony Peckham is in final negotiations to rewrite The Twilight Zone for Warner Bros. and Appian Way, says Variety.
Matt Reeves is set to direct from a script originally penned by Jason Rothenberg.
Warner Bros. is targeting the pic as a tentpole, and unlike the 1983 feature that had four separate storylines, this pic will have one story with elements from the “Twilight Zone” universe.

I am out of my mind excited. Literally, out of my mind. Variety broke the news this morning that Cloverfield and Let Me In director (and Steven Spielberg protege) Matt Reeves will be getting behind the camera for Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Twilight Zone!!!
While the ’83 version had four directors, this project will feature a single storyline and one director. Rand Ravich and Jason Rothenberg penned the script, and while plot details are under wraps, sources say the film would be a single storyline that touches on several themes from the Rod Sterling TV show that ran from 1959-1964.

Fox 2000 has set Matt Reeves (Let Me In, Cloverfield) to direct The Passage, the film based on the bestselling Justin Cronin novel about an experiment that goes awry and creates a swarm of bloodthirsty vampires that brings the world to the brink of extinction, reports Deadline. Fox acquired the book in 2007 for north of $3 million right after Cronin made a 3-book deal with Ballantine for $3.75 million based on the first 400 pages of the book and an outline for a novel series.
“In ‘The Passage’, a group of terminally ill cancer patients get healthy after being subjected to the bites of bats in South America. Naturally, the government see this as a cure for the disease and starts experimenting. They end up with a legion of nearly indestructible, telepathic vampire masters that begin infecting the populace.” The tone is closer to 28 Days Later and “The Stand” than Let The Right One In or Twilight Saga.
Reeves will supervise a rewrite of a script done by John Logan.
Reeves will also adapt a film based on the Ray Nelson short story “8 O’Clock in the Morning” for Universal, about a man who awakens to realize he and others are being controlled by aliens. It’s a quasi-remake of They Live.

One of the most terrifying films ever made was John Carpenter’s They Live, part sci-fi thriller and part social satire, told the story of a down-on-his-luck construction worker (Roddy Piper) who discovers glasses that let him see aliens walking among us and controlling humanity. With a remake long in the works, Cloverfield and Let Me In director Matt Reeves hopes to tell his own version that’s heavily inspired by the long-pondered conspiracy theory that’s definitely chilling.
Deadline reports that Reeves has signed on at Universal Pictures to write and direct a feature based on the famed Ray Nelson short story 8 O’Clock in the Morning, with Strike Entertainment partners Eric Newman and Marc Abraham producing.

Thanks to B-D reader ‘Avery’ for the heads up on a new article over at Total Film who scored some massive news regarding the long-gestured Cloverfield sequel. Since the release back in 2008, Matt Reeves has been busy with Let Me In, while producer J.J. Abrams has been working furiously on Star Trek and Super 8. Getting the two in the same room focusing on a sequel hasn’t been an easy task, and both have repeatedly stated that they want to make sure they have a super cool new idea.
Finally there appears to be a breakthrough…
“Well, you are going to see it – we just don’t know when,” laughs Reeves, officially acknowledging a sequel WILL happen for the first time ever.

While fans of the first Cloverfield are understandably drooling for the day Cloverfield 2 finally makes its way to the big screen, in an interview with B-D reporter Chris Eggertsen earlier today director Matt Reeves (talking about the Feb. 1st DVD/Blu-ray release of Let Me In) claimed that producer J.J. Abrams, screenwriter Drew Goddard, and himself just haven’t had a chance to meet yet to hash out a story – and that if they don’t figure out something they’re all happy with once they do get together, the project could in fact never happen. In other words: the sequel isn’t dead, but it’s not exactly on the fast-track either.
“Unfortunately, I don’t have any [news],” said Reeves. “We’re just…you know, somebody was saying to me that I had said something about, ‘well, we’re gonna try and get the band back together.’ And the band is still not back together, we’re just still talking about getting back together. But we haven’t really had a chance to talk about it. I mean, J.J. is eding ‘Super 8′ right now, he’s got a very, very intense schedule right now that he’s working on. And Drew [Goddard] is writing Steven Spielberg’s next movie, I think, after the Abraham Lincoln film. He’s doing ‘Robopocalypse’. So everybody’s very, very busy. But I’m sure we’ll get together one of these days and sort of bounce it around until we come up with something that we get excited about. And if we don’t, then we won’t make it.”
